To host an alt:V server, install the current server build on Windows 10 or newer or on Linux, choose the JavaScript or C# module, edit server.toml, start the server, add your resources, and make the configured network port reachable. A basic installation uses port 7788. Hosting the server and running the alt:V client are separate questions: a Linux machine can host a server, while the official client does not have Linux support.
This guide follows the official setup, configuration, FAQ, and specification documentation and distinguishes documented settings from workload-dependent recommendations.

What an alt:V server actually requires
alt:V is a multiplayer server platform for custom Grand Theft Auto V experiences. The server process, scripts, resources, database, and network endpoint run on the host machine. Players connect with the separate alt:V client and the game installation required by that client. Installing a server does not install or validate the client on the same operating system.

The official platform documentation describes JavaScript and C# server modules. This walkthrough uses the JavaScript setup path because its prerequisites and download choices are documented in one sequence; the same operational concepts apply to a C# deployment, but each resource must support the module you select. Start with the official JavaScript setup walkthrough and the platform documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- GRAND THEFT AUTO V When a young street hustler, a retired bank robber and a terrifying psychopath land themselves in trouble, they must pull off a series of dangerous heists to survive in a city in which they can trust nobody, least of all each other.
- GRAND THEFT AUTO ONLINE Discover an ever-evolving world of choices and ways to play as you climb the criminal ranks of Los Santos and Blaine County in the ultimate shared Online experience.
- THE CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE STARTER PACK The Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack is the fastest way for new GTA Online players to jumpstart their criminal empires with the most exciting and popular content plus $1,000,000 bonus cash to spend in GTA Online - all content valued at over GTA$10,000,000 if purchased separately.
- This game will no longer support Windows 7 or 8 operating systems starting January 30, 2024.
Prerequisites for the JavaScript path
- The current Node.js release recommended by the setup documentation.
- A code editor and enough command-prompt knowledge to move into a folder and start a process.
- The current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable on Windows.
- Windows 10 or newer, or a supported Linux server distribution.
- On Linux, the
libatomic1package. On Debian or Ubuntu systems the documented installation command isapt-get install libatomic1.
Install these prerequisites before downloading the server. The server files and your scripts are independent of the client files, so keep the server in a dedicated directory with a backup plan for its configuration and resources.
How much CPU, memory and storage do you need?
There is no universal player number that a given machine can guarantee. Script complexity, database activity, custom assets, synchronization work, and concurrent players all change the load. The official server-specifications page presents orientation figures rather than a benchmark or capacity promise.
| Documentation figure | What it means | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 3.2 GHz CPU | Suggested minimum for a performant server above 100 players | Undated guidance; not a guaranteed capacity |
| 4 CPU cores | Suggested minimum for the same above-100-player scenario | Workload and script behavior can require more |
| 4 GB RAM | Suggested minimum for that scenario | Additional memory is needed for databases and similar workloads |
| Disk space | Depends on the database and scripts | No fixed amount is published |
| 6–42% CPU utilization | Average range stated for a named mid-tier example | Documentation says it depends on players and other factors |
| 300–600 players at peak hours | Average peak-hour figure for that mid-tier example | Not a universal server limit or test result |
| Less than 1.25 GB RAM | Average memory figure for that mid-tier example | Undated vendor documentation guidance |
| Around 8 cores and 3.7 GHz | Average mid-tier hardware figures | Not a required specification for every gamemode |
Use the 3.2 GHz, four-core, 4 GB description as a starting floor for planning an above-100-player project, not as a promise that 100 players will run smoothly. The mid-tier figures are also undated figures published by the documentation and accessed in 2026, not 2026 laboratory measurements. The page cautions that requirements can change with future features and performance changes.
Capacity planning that avoids false precision
- Reserve memory for the operating system, Node.js or C# runtime, database, logs, and any web or voice services running beside the server.
- Choose a fast CPU with strong per-core performance; a high core count does not compensate for a weak clock speed when a resource is CPU-bound.
- Put the database and script data on storage with enough free space for growth, backups, and logs. The documentation intentionally leaves disk sizing to the database and script workload.
- Begin with a conservative slot count, observe CPU, memory, network, and tick behavior under your own resources, then increase slots in stages.
The official FAQ states that server slots are bounded by hardware. Treat the slot setting as an operating limit to validate, not as evidence that the machine can sustain that many active players.

Should you rent a server or self-host?
Both routes can run the same alt:V files. A rented VPS or dedicated machine is usually simpler for an always-on public server because the data-center network, power, and physical hardware are someone else’s responsibility. Self-hosting gives you physical control and may suit a private test or a machine you already operate, but you must keep it powered, patched, reachable from the internet, and protected.
| Decision factor | Rented VPS or dedicated host | Self-hosted machine |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Designed for continuous operation; confirm the host’s service terms | Depends on your power, internet connection, and maintenance |
| CPU and memory | Select capacity with headroom for scripts and databases | Buy or repurpose hardware that meets the workload |
| Operating system | Choose a supported Windows or Linux image | Install and maintain the supported OS yourself |
| Network reachability | Configure the provider firewall and the guest firewall | Configure the host firewall, router forwarding, and ISP policy |
| Storage | Size the virtual or physical disk for resources, database, logs, and backups | Provide reliable local storage and a separate backup destination |
| Latency | Pick a region close to the intended player population | Limited by your home or office location and ISP routing |
| Administration | You manage the OS, alt:V files, updates, and configuration | You manage all of those plus hardware and local networking |
| Cost | Recurring charge; current prices vary by provider and region | Hardware, electricity, connectivity, and replacement costs |
Do not choose a plan solely because its marketing lists a player count. The official specifications do not publish a provider comparison or a guaranteed capacity formula. Match CPU performance, memory headroom, storage, OS support, firewall access, and geographic location to the resources you will actually run.
Download the server files
- Open the official setup page and follow its link to the alt:V server download.
- Select the branch appropriate for your deployment.
- Select the data files, the JavaScript or C# module, and a sample configuration. Example resources are optional and useful for a first launch.
- Download the build and extract it into a dedicated server folder. Keep the extracted directory intact so the executable can find its data and configuration files.
The download selections determine which module and example files are present; they do not configure your public network or database for you.

Start the server process
Windows
- Open PowerShell, Command Prompt, or an integrated terminal in the extracted server folder.
- Run
altv-server.exe. The setup documentation’s illustrated launch command is Windows-specific. - Watch the console for startup messages and leave the process running while you test.
- Stop it with
Ctrl+Cwhen you need to edit files or shut the server down.
Do not launch the executable from an unrelated working directory; keeping the terminal in the server folder makes relative paths for server.toml and resources predictable.

Linux
Native Linux server builds exist. Use the executable and launch instructions distributed with the Linux build you downloaded; the Windows command above is not a Linux command. Install libatomic1 first when your distribution requires it, then verify that the process can read the extracted directory and bind the configured port.
Configure server.toml before inviting players
server.toml is the central configuration file. It controls identity, binding, slots, announcement behavior, modules, resources, and other server options. The configuration reference is the authority for available keys and their types. The setup sample includes settings like these:
name = "My alt:V server"
host = "0.0.0.0"
port = 7788
players = 128
announce = false
gamemode = "Freeroam"
language = "en"
description = "Private test server"
modules = ["js-module"]
resources = ["example-resource"]
These are illustrative sample values, not production defaults or a recommended slot count. Set each value to match your project and then save the file in the server’s root directory.

Load resources and select the matching module
- Place each resource in the server’s resource directory using the structure required by that resource.
- Add the exact folder name to the
resourcesarray inserver.toml. Preserve capitalization; the JavaScript guide notes that names are case-sensitive. - Confirm that the corresponding module appears in
modules. JavaScript resources generally requirejs-module; C# resources requirecsharp-modulewhen their documentation specifies it. - Read the resource’s own requirements for dependencies, database connections, environment variables, and load order. A resource is not automatically interchangeable merely because its folder exists.
- Restart the server after configuration changes and inspect the startup output for load errors.
Start with one known-good resource, establish a successful connection, and add custom resources incrementally. This isolates a resource problem from a network or base-installation problem.
Open the correct network path
The documented default is port 7788. When a CDN is not used, the server connection uses both TCP and UDP on that port. With a CDN, the documentation says only UDP is used for that server connection. A CDN is optional for a basic deployment; do not add one merely to make a first server work.
- Choose the port in
server.toml, leaving 7788 unless another service requires a change. - Allow the required transport on the operating-system firewall.
- If you are on a VPS or dedicated host, create the matching inbound rule in the provider’s network firewall or security group.
- If you self-host behind a router, forward the selected port to the server’s private address and check that your ISP permits inbound service traffic.
- Keep the same port and transport assumptions in your connection test. A mismatch between the file, firewall, router, and advertised endpoint prevents players from reaching the process.
Changing port without changing the surrounding firewall and forwarding rules is the most common configuration mismatch. If you enable a CDN, revisit the transport rule because its documented behavior differs from a direct connection.
Tokens, announcement and development mode
You do not need a token for ordinary development. The official FAQ says a token is required to announce a server on the masterlist or to test cloud authentication. To obtain one, create a server in Server Manager and copy its private token, following the official FAQ. Store it as a secret and do not publish it in screenshots, repositories, or support posts.
Best Value
Set announce = false while you are building and testing privately. When the server is ready for a public listing, set announcement according to the configuration reference and provide the token required for that purpose. Announcement is not a substitute for opening the service port; both the application settings and network path must be correct.
The configuration reference identifies debug mode as a development aid and describes reconnect as experimental. Enable debugging only when you are diagnosing a specific problem, and turn it off for normal production operation unless you have a documented reason to keep it enabled.
Linux server versus Linux client
The official FAQ confirms native Linux server builds, so Linux is a valid hosting operating system. It separately states that the alt:V client has no official Linux support. Some users have tried Wine or Proton, but the documentation does not guarantee stability comparable with a native Windows client.

Quick Recap
Test the installation before going public
- Start the server with announcement disabled and confirm that the process remains running without configuration or resource errors.
- Connect from a client on the same network or through the intended public endpoint, depending on what you are testing.
- Verify that the configured name, description, gamemode, and slot limit appear as intended.
- Join with the smallest resource set first, then add custom resources one at a time.
- Exercise the database and the busiest scripted actions you expect during real play; monitor CPU, memory, and storage rather than relying on the slot number.
- Stop and restart the process to confirm that the configuration and resources load consistently.
- Only after these checks, enable announcement and distribute the endpoint to players.
Troubleshoot the failures you are most likely to see
The process starts but nobody can connect
- Confirm the process is listening on the same port shown in
server.toml. - Check both the host firewall and any provider firewall, router forwarding, or security-group rule.
- For a direct connection without a CDN, verify that both TCP and UDP are allowed on the selected port.
- Check that players are using the current public address and port, not an old value from before a configuration change.
A resource is ignored or fails during startup
- Compare the resource folder name with the
resourcesentry character by character; capitalization matters. - Confirm that the resource’s required scripting module is present in
modules. - Check the resource’s own dependency and database instructions instead of assuming the sample resource layout applies.
- Remove the new resource temporarily and restart. If the base server works again, add the resource back after correcting its requirements.
Masterlist announcement or cloud authentication fails
- Keep the server private while diagnosing; announcement is not required for local development.
- Confirm that the token came from Server Manager, is copied exactly, and is kept private.
- Check the
announceandtokensettings against the configuration reference.
The server slows down as players join
- Record CPU utilization, memory use, database activity, and storage pressure during the busiest scripted actions.
- Reduce the configured slot ceiling while you identify the resource or query that consumes the most time.
- Add memory for the database and related services rather than comparing your machine only with the documented average RAM figure.
- Increase capacity in measured steps. The official specifications are guidance, not a benchmark for your gamemode.
Operate the server safely after launch
- Keep the server executable, modules, resources, and
server.tomlin a documented directory structure. - Back up the configuration, resource code, and database on a schedule that matches how much player progress you can afford to lose.
- Keep private tokens outside public repositories and redact them from support logs.
- Record configuration changes so you can roll back a resource or port change quickly.
- Apply operating-system and runtime updates during a maintenance window, then restart and test before announcing the server as online.
- Watch the actual workload as your player base grows; the documentation notes that requirements can change with future features and performance changes.
Go-live checklist
- Windows 10+ or a supported Linux server is installed, with Node.js and the required Windows runtime or Linux package.
- The intended JavaScript or C# module is selected and every resource supports it.
server.tomlhas the correct name, host, port, slots, metadata, modules, and resources.- The configured port is allowed through every firewall, router, and provider network layer; CDN transport rules are understood if a CDN is enabled.
- Private testing succeeds before announcement is enabled.
- A token is present only when masterlist announcement or cloud-auth testing requires it.
- CPU, memory, database, storage, and network behavior have been observed under a representative workload.
- Backups, update ownership, and a rollback procedure are written down.
