If Valheim console commands do nothing, fix the launch configuration first, then open the console inside a loaded world and run devcommands. On Steam, that means adding -console to Valheim’s Library launch options and starting the game from that Library entry. Microsoft Store players add the argument to a Valheim.exe shortcut, Xbox enables console mode by default, and the Mac App Store version must be launched with the documented executable and argument. After the console opens with F5 (or LB + LT + Start on a controller), most commands are unavailable until devcommands is submitted.

The other major cause is context: the familiar cheats documented for solo play are not multiplayer-server commands. If a command works in a local world but not on a dedicated or joined server, the launch setup may be correct; you likely need the server’s administrator command set instead.

Start with this five-minute diagnosis
Work through these checks in order. Each one rules out a different failure point, so changing several settings at once makes the result harder to interpret.
- Enable console mode for your platform. Add
-consolewhere your platform requires it, and use the same launcher or shortcut every time. - Load completely into a world. The console shortcut is intended to be used after you are inside the world, not at the title screen.
- Open the console. Press
F5on a keyboard. With a controller, pressLB + LT + Starttogether. - Authorize developer commands. Type
devcommandsexactly and submit it. Iron Gate says most console commands become eligible only after this command is executed. - Test a command that matches the session. Use a simple solo command in a single-player world. Do not use the solo cheat list as a test on a multiplayer server.
If the console never appears, stay in the launch-and-input checks. If the console appears but devcommands is rejected or another command has no effect, move to the authorization, session and modification checks below.

Enable the developer console on your platform
Steam
Open the Steam Library, select Valheim, open Properties, choose General, and put -console in Launch Options. Close the dialog, then launch Valheim from that same Steam Library entry. Iron Gate’s support guidance specifically ties the argument to the Steam Library launch options and advises using the same shortcut through which the console was enabled.
A common mistake is adding the argument, then starting the game from a desktop shortcut, a taskbar pin or another launcher that does not carry the option. For a clean test, start directly from the Library entry after saving the option. If you later remove or replace the shortcut, recheck that the new entry still passes -console.

Create or edit a shortcut to Valheim.exe, append -console to the shortcut’s Target, save it, and launch Valheim through that shortcut. Opening the game through a different Microsoft Store entry can omit the argument, so use the configured shortcut for the entire test.
Xbox
Iron Gate says console mode is enabled by default on Xbox. No -console launch argument is required. Enter a world and use the controller combination LB + LT + Start. If nothing appears, verify that the buttons are being pressed while the world is loaded rather than while you are navigating menus.

Mac App Store
Launch the documented executable from Terminal with:
/Applications/Valheim.app/Contents/MacOS/Valheim -consoleThis starts the Mac App Store build with developer-console mode enabled. If you create a permanent launcher, make sure it invokes that executable with the -console argument; launching the app normally can omit the option.

Open the console and run devcommands correctly
- Start Valheim through the configured platform entry.
- Load into the world in which you want to test commands.
- Press
F5. On a controller, pressLB + LT + Start. - Enter
devcommandswith no extra punctuation and submit it. - Run a basic command appropriate to that world, such as
posto display coordinates orsaveto save the world.
Iron Gate’s support wording is important: “Most console commands become eligible only after typing and executing devcommands command.” Seeing a console window alone therefore does not prove that cheats are authorized. Submit the command, then test again.
Check whether you are in single-player or multiplayer
PC Gamer’s command reference identifies commands such as god, heal, pos, goto, freefly, save and debugmode as single-player cheats and says they do not work on a multiplayer server. This distinction explains many reports that commands work in one world but “stop working” online.

When troubleshooting, reproduce the problem in a temporary single-player world. If the command succeeds there but fails on the server, stop changing the client’s -console setting and investigate server administration and permissions instead.
Commands you can use as controlled tests
Use one command at a time and type the command name exactly. In the examples below, text in square brackets is a value you replace; do not type the brackets unless the command’s own syntax requires them.

What debug mode adds
PC Gamer’s reference says debug mode adds these keyboard actions: B enables no-cost creative building, Z enables flight, K kills nearby enemies, and Ctrl + F3 hides the HUD. These effects are another reason to test in a disposable or backed-up world, particularly before using map, event or world-state commands.
When F5 does not open the console
Use this branch only when there is no console window at all.

- Confirm the launch entry. On Steam, inspect Launch Options and start from the Library entry. On Microsoft Store, start the shortcut whose Target contains
-console. On Mac, run the documented Terminal command. Xbox should already have console mode enabled. - Check keyboard function-key behavior. Laptop keyboards may assign media or system functions to the top row. Test
F5directly and, if your keyboard requires it, use the keyboard’s function-key mode or the appropriateFncombination. - Test the key outside Valheim. If
F5fails in another application or the key is intercepted by the keyboard utility, the game cannot receive the shortcut. A controller test can separate a game-input problem from a physical-key problem. - Use the controller shortcut. In a loaded world, press
LB + LT + Start. If this works whileF5does not, the console is enabled and the remaining issue is keyboard input. - Check permissions on Windows. Iron Gate’s troubleshooting guidance includes considering Windows administrator permissions when the console will not open. Apply this as a diagnostic rather than assuming administrator mode is required for every installation.
- Retest without recent modifications. Disable or remove recently added mods and test a vanilla launch. A mod can intercept input or alter console behavior, so reproducing the issue without it is the quickest way to isolate that variable.
Do not repeatedly type commands while the console is invisible. First establish that the window opens; only then diagnose command authorization or syntax.
When the console opens but devcommands does nothing
Make sure you are already inside a world and that the text is exactly devcommands. The command must be submitted, not merely entered into the line. If it is accepted but a cheat still has no effect, compare the session with the single-player/multiplayer table: the solo cheat list is not a server command set.
Also test a command with an observable result, such as pos or save, before trying a command that depends on nearby enemies, creatures, coordinates or an event name. For example, killall cannot visibly change an area with no nearby enemies, and tame requires nearby creatures. A command that needs a replacement value will likewise fail if you leave the placeholder text unchanged.
Mods, settings and community-reported conflicts
If the official launch steps are correct but F5 still fails, inspect recent mods and the in-game developer-console setting. A Steam discussion describes a user who had -console configured but still could not open the console; replies suggested checking the settings option, confirming the override and removing an outdated mod. That is community evidence, not a confirmed universal cause, so treat it as an isolation checklist rather than a guaranteed fix.
- Record whether the problem occurs in the unmodded game.
- Disable the most recently installed or updated mod first.
- Launch through the same configured entry and retest
F5. - If the vanilla test works, re-enable modifications one at a time until the conflicting component is identified.
A modded client can also create a misleading comparison: a command may work in one profile and fail in another even though both use the same world. Keep the platform launch option, mod state and world context identical while testing.

Do not treat access to the client console as proof that you are a server administrator. The solo commands listed above are not multiplayer-server cheats, according to PC Gamer’s reference. On a dedicated or joined server, use the administrator command set and permissions appropriate to that server. If you do not control the server, ask its administrator whether your account is authorized and which commands are supported.
The cleanest diagnostic is a two-world comparison: run devcommands and a harmless test such as pos in a local single-player world, then repeat the intended operation online. A success locally combined with a failure online points to server context or permissions, not to the keyboard shortcut.
Achievements after using developer commands
Achievement behavior is version- and platform-dependent. PC Gamer reported on September 11, 2026 that a Steam-only patch added the command yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanyway. The report quotes Iron Gate describing it as an opt-in function for players blocked from achievements because of previous use of devcommands or mods, while leaving the decision to the player.
Because the report specifies Steam and a particular patch, do not assume this command exists on Xbox, Microsoft Store or Mac, or on every game version. If you use it, understand that it is an explicit choice to opt into achievements after prior developer-command or mod use; it is not a fix for a console that will not open.

Safe testing habits
- Use a copy or disposable world before running
exploremap,event [name],tod, teleportation or debug-mode actions. - Keep the exact launch entry documented for each platform so a later shortcut change does not silently remove
-console. - Change one variable per test: platform entry, keyboard/controller input,
devcommandsauthorization, session type or mod state. - When reporting a problem, include the platform, whether
F5opens anything, whetherdevcommandsis accepted, whether the world is solo or multiplayer, and whether the game is modded.
In practice, the fix is usually one of three things: launch Valheim with console mode actually enabled, execute devcommands after loading the world, or stop applying single-player cheats to a multiplayer server.
