Kelvin is a deaf and mute survivor who communicates through a written notepad after the helicopter crash. You do not issue spoken commands or type ordinary chat messages: walk up to him, open the notepad interaction, choose an order, and select its options. Used correctly, he is an excellent gatherer, builder’s assistant, cleaner and lookout. He is not a combat companion; when enemies attack, he retreats instead of fighting on the frontline.
This guide explains every core order, what Kelvin can carry, how to use him around a base, which jobs he cannot perform, and what the optional debug commands can and cannot safely do. Labels and behavior can change with patches, so confirm the wording and available options in your current build.

What Kelvin can and cannot do
Kelvin’s value is measured in time saved rather than damage dealt. He can collect common construction materials and food, deliver items to you or a holder, help finish player blueprints, make basic fires and shelters, clear a chosen area, maintain parts of a base, and indicate nearby enemies. He also handles his own basic eating and drinking.

#1 Best Overall
- Strong jobs: recurring resource collection, holder filling, blueprint completion, fire and shelter setup, vegetation clearing, repairs and other maintenance supported by your patch.
- Situational jobs: carrying arrows, radios or food, following you through a safe area, and pointing toward nearby enemies.
- Hard limits: no frontline combat role, no spoken communication, and no guarantee that every holder, trap or defensive feature is supported in every version.
Kelvin’s notepad commands at a glance
| Command | What you choose | Typical result | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Take Item / Take clothing | A clothing item | Kelvin equips the outfit and changes appearance | Clothing is cosmetic and does not improve work or combat performance |
| Follow Me | No resource target | Kelvin accompanies you | He still retreats when fighting starts |
| Get | Berries, fish, sticks, rocks, stones, arrows, a radio or logs; then a destination | Kelvin gathers and hands over or deposits the selected item | Available destinations and holders depend on the item and game version |
| Build | A fire, shelter, finish structure or clear shelter task | Kelvin performs the selected construction action | He works on supported simple tasks and player blueprints, not every building operation |
| Stay | Here, at a shelter or hidden | Kelvin remains at the selected location or posture | Staying does not make him a fighter or invulnerable |
| Take a break | No target | Pauses his current assigned work | You must issue a new order to resume a job |
| Maintain base | No resource target | Kelvin performs supported upkeep, repairs and completion work around the base | Exact features, holders and defensive actions are patch-sensitive |
| Clear | A radius of 5, 10 or 20 metres | Removes vegetation and other clearable clutter in the selected area | The radius is limited and only clearable objects are affected |
How to issue an order
- Approach Kelvin safely. Do this before combat begins; he may stop responding or move if a threat is active.
- Open his notepad interaction. The exact prompt can vary by platform and patch, but the interaction presents written orders rather than voice dialogue.
- Choose the command group. Select Get, Build, Stay, Maintain base, Clear or another available category.
- Pick the item, location or radius. For example, a Get order first asks what to collect and then where to put it; Clear asks for 5, 10 or 20 metres.
- Let Kelvin begin. Give him a clear route and enough time to reach the target. A new order replaces or redirects the current task.
- Use Take a break when you need control. Pause him before moving a base, starting a dangerous encounter or assigning a different job.
If an option is missing, do not assume you selected the wrong menu. Options can be hidden when no compatible holder or target is nearby, and support has changed in updates. Move closer to the intended destination, check that the object is built and accessible, then reopen the notepad.
Using Get for resources
Get is Kelvin’s main labour command. It has two decisions: the resource and the destination. The destination can be a handoff to you, a drop nearby, following you while carrying, or filling a compatible holder. The available choices vary by resource.
Logs
Choose logs when you are expanding a large structure or filling a log-based storage system. Where supported, Kelvin can fill a log sled or another compatible holder. Earlier updates added and adjusted log-sled behavior, so a sled that worked differently in an older save may require a fresh order in a newer build. Place the holder where Kelvin can reach it and avoid parking it behind walls, steep slopes or unfinished pieces.
Sticks, rocks and stones
These are the routine materials for traps, fires, simple structures and defensive work. Use a nearby drop location when you are crafting manually, or select a compatible holder when the menu offers one. Stones and rocks are separate choices in the notepad; choose the one your blueprint actually consumes rather than assuming the game will substitute between them.
Berries and fish
Assign berries or fish when you want a steady food supply without leaving your building area. Kelvin can gather the selected food and bring it to you or leave it nearby, depending on the destination options shown. He is not a replacement for your own food planning: collection speed, pathing and availability depend on the local environment.
Arrows
Arrows are useful when you want ammunition brought back to a defensive position or storage area. Arrow collection and holder behavior have received fixes over time. If Kelvin stops at a tree, wall or holder, cancel the order, clear the route, and issue it again after confirming the target is reachable.
Radio
A radio can be selected as a carry target. This is primarily a delivery or convenience task rather than a combat upgrade. Do not expect Kelvin to use the radio as a weapon or to provide spoken information; his communication remains written and visual.

Choosing a destination
- Give to me: Kelvin brings the selected item directly to your position.
- Drop nearby: Useful for creating a work pile next to a blueprint or crafting station.
- Fill a holder: Choose this only when a compatible holder is built and the option appears.
- Follow me: Kelvin carries the item while accompanying you, then can be reassigned once you reach camp.
When a delivery fails, first inspect the destination rather than the resource. A full holder, blocked path, missing blueprint or inaccessible terrain can all make a valid Get order appear to stall.
Build orders and blueprint support
The Build group covers a small set of direct construction jobs and assistance with structures you have already planned.
Make a fire
Use Build and choose the fire option when you need a basic cooking or warmth point. Give the order in a clear, open location. Kelvin may not place it where you would have chosen a long-term hearth, so use your own blueprint for a permanent layout and Kelvin’s fire order for quick utility.
Make a shelter
A shelter order is useful when establishing a temporary rest point. Keep the area free of conflicting blueprints and place it on reasonably flat ground. If the shelter is part of a larger base plan, finish the main blueprint yourself or use a separate Finish structure order.

Finish structure
When you have placed a supported blueprint, Build can direct Kelvin to complete it with available materials. This does not create materials from nothing: logs, sticks, rocks or other required components must still be present or accessible. For a large project, combine Finish structure with Get orders that deliver the bottleneck resource to a holder or nearby pile.
Clear shelter
Clear shelter removes a shelter task when you no longer want it. Use this instead of leaving obsolete temporary plans in the work area, where they can interfere with pathing or later construction.
Maintain base: what it covers
Maintain base is the best command for a settled camp. Depending on the current game version and the objects in your base, Kelvin can repair damage, complete supported blueprints, fill some holders and sharpen defensive walls. The command is broad: Kelvin chooses an eligible maintenance task rather than letting you select every individual repair.

- Build the base components first and leave their access routes open.
- Place required materials in reachable holders or piles.
- Issue Maintain base from inside or beside the camp.
- Watch which task Kelvin selects; if he ignores a damaged object, it may not be supported by the current version or may be unreachable.
- Use Take a break before major rebuilding, then resume maintenance after the layout is stable.
Maintenance is not a guarantee that every wall, trap, drying rack or defensive device will be serviced. Support for traps and drying racks has been added or corrected in past updates, so test one example in your own build before designing the entire camp around automated upkeep.

Follow Me
Follow Me relocates Kelvin with you and is useful when moving between camps, bringing him to a newly established worksite or keeping him close while you gather. He may lag behind around cliffs, dense trees and unfinished structures. Once enemies appear, following does not turn him into a fighter; he can retreat.
Stay
Stay offers three practical placements: remain here, stay at a shelter or stay hidden. Use here for a work zone, shelter for a camp-based position and hidden when you want him out of sight during an expedition or attack risk. Staying controls location and posture, not his health, inventory or combat ability.
Take a break
Take a break pauses assigned work without deleting your base or collected items. It is the cleanest way to stop Kelvin before moving a holder, rebuilding a wall, entering a cave or testing a new blueprint. Issue a fresh Get, Build or Maintain base order when you are ready.
Clear: controlling a work area
Clear removes eligible vegetation and clutter within a radius of 5, 10 or 20 metres. Choose 5 metres for a precise building pad, 10 metres for a normal camp perimeter and 20 metres for a broad approach or sightline. The command affects only objects the game marks as clearable; it does not flatten every rock, remove completed structures or guarantee a permanently empty area if growth or spawning rules restore clutter later.
Start with the smallest radius that solves the problem. A 20-metre order can remove useful cover or gatherable plants around a compact base, while a 5-metre order may leave branches blocking a larger blueprint. Reissue Clear after extending a base rather than assuming the original radius follows new construction.
What Kelvin carries and what clothing changes
The documented carry targets are berries, raw fish, sticks, rocks, stones, arrows, a radio and a log. These are task targets, not a published universal inventory-capacity number. The game can limit how many items he carries at once and which destinations accept them, so plan around the amount shown by the current order rather than an assumed slot count.

Examples of clothing options include a blazer, hoodie, leather jacket, space suit and tuxedo. Use Take Item or Take clothing, select the garment and confirm the handoff. Clothing changes his appearance only; they do not improve gathering speed, carrying ability, durability or fighting performance.
Combat behavior and safe base placement
Kelvin can point toward nearby enemies, making him a useful warning system when you are building or sorting storage. He is not a frontline fighter and retreats during fights. Keep his routine away from chokepoints, cliff edges and the outermost wall where an attack is likely to begin.
- Assign Stay at a shelter or hidden before scouting hostile territory.
- Use Maintain base inside the protected area, not at an exposed resource outpost.
- Pause him with Take a break before deliberately attracting enemies or testing defenses.
- After combat, check whether he has moved, then use Follow Me or Stay to return him to the intended work zone.
Optional debug and console commands
Debug commands are separate from Kelvin’s notepad and require debug access. They are useful for testing a save or recovering a missing companion, but they are version-sensitive and can produce unintended inventory or AI states. Save before experimenting and avoid using them in a world you cannot restore.
| Command | Purpose | Important caution |
|---|---|---|
addcharacter robby |
Adds another Kelvin character | It can create duplicates and unusual pathing; use only when you intentionally want an additional character |
robbycarry |
Assigns selected carried items to Kelvin | Carry targets and limits can vary by version and context |
additem |
Adds an item through the debug inventory command | Required item arguments and accepted identifiers are build-dependent |
spawnitem |
Spawns an item in the world | Repeated use can accumulate items and disrupt a save if overused |
The command names above are the stable references documented for debug use; do not assume that an argument format from an old video still works. Enter the syntax supported by your current debug build, test it in a copied save, and remove duplicate characters or excess items only with a documented command for that same build. A command that appears to run successfully can still leave Kelvin stuck, duplicated or carrying an invalid object.
Patch history and why behavior changes
Version sensitivity matters because Kelvin’s AI has received ongoing fixes. The wiki home lists Patch 16 – Hotfix 3 as released on October 3, 2025. Earlier fixes and additions documented for Kelvin include stone pickup, log-sled filling, trap and drying-rack support, and corrections involving trees, arrows and holders.
When an order behaves differently after an update, compare the current notepad choices rather than relying on an old screenshot. A missing option may reflect a deliberate change, a holder-state requirement or a bug fixed in a later hotfix. Keep a manual backup of essential materials and be prepared to collect a resource yourself while you verify the new behavior.
Practical command plans
Starting a new camp
- Use Follow Me to bring Kelvin to the selected site.
- Use Clear at 10 metres to make a workable building area.
- Place your shelter and core blueprints.
- Use Get for sticks, rocks and logs, choosing nearby drops or compatible holders.
- Use Build and Finish structure for supported pieces.
- Set Stay at shelter when you leave to scout.
Stocking a large construction project
- Place a log holder or sled where it has a clear approach.
- Assign Get logs with the holder as the destination if that option appears.
- Use separate Get orders for sticks, rocks or stones rather than mixing targets.
- Finish one blueprint at a time so Kelvin has an obvious eligible task.
- Switch to Maintain base after the main structure is complete.
Keeping a defended base running
- Clear a 5- or 10-metre interior work zone, preserving useful exterior cover.
- Fill compatible holders with Get orders before an attack is likely.
- Issue Maintain base for repairs, blueprint completion and supported wall sharpening.
- Keep Kelvin at the shelter or hidden during a dangerous encounter.
- After the area is safe, use Follow Me to return him to the work zone and restart maintenance.
Troubleshooting stalled or missing tasks
Kelvin does nothing
Pause him, move to a clear area, reopen the notepad and issue the order again. Check that the selected resource exists nearby and that the destination is not blocked or full.

He stops at a holder
Confirm the holder accepts that exact item, clear objects around its entrance and try a nearby drop destination. Holder behavior has changed across patches, so test the same item in another compatible holder before redesigning the base.
He will not finish a blueprint
Make sure the blueprint is a supported structure, required materials are accessible and no other task is taking priority. Use Take a break, then issue Finish structure again from close to the project.
He disappears after combat
Kelvin may retreat rather than fight. Use Follow Me when you locate him, or issue Stay at shelter once he is safely back. Do not treat a retreat as proof that he has been permanently removed.
A console command creates problems
Stop issuing additional commands, reload the pre-command save and retry one operation at a time. Duplicated characters and accumulated spawned items are easier to prevent than to clean up, especially when command syntax has changed between builds.
For a persistent multiplayer world, Godlike.Host provides Sons of the Forest game-server hosting. Its Sons of the Forest plans list 4, 12 and 20 slots; the server’s MaxPlayers setting allows 1 to 8 players (Steam Community server guide, 11 Oct 2026).
Bottom line
Use Kelvin as an automated helper: Get for recurring materials and food, Build for simple fires, shelters and blueprint completion, Clear for controlled site preparation, and Maintain base for supported upkeep. Follow Me, Stay and Take a break manage his position and schedule, while Take clothing changes only his look. Keep him out of combat, design routes and holders he can reach, and treat debug commands as optional, save-backed tools whose behavior must be checked after each patch.
