Iron Gate’s September 9, 2026 release adds the Deep North, the game’s final planned biome, and ends Early Access. Existing worlds remain playable; starting fresh is the better fit if you want the full progression, while returning players can keep their progress and explore areas they have not uncovered yet.
What changed in Valheim 1.0?
The headline addition is the Deep North, a cold and hostile biome with new enemies, creatures, equipment, and other discoveries. Coffee Stain describes 1.0 as bringing the game to the team’s intended full survival vision; that is the publisher’s framing, not a guarantee that every system or biome has been rebuilt.

Iron Gate’s launch notes list more than 40 weapons, bombs, and ammunition; four armor sets; two capes; two trinkets; more than 10 creatures; more than 80 buildable pieces; over 30 crafting materials; and more than 20 food items. These are the studio’s published counts, not an independent audit. The notes also include locations, music, events, mechanics, upgradeable pockets, and achievements.
There are changes beyond new content: a draw-distance setting, reworked hammer and serving-tray menus, a magica cloth system, an enemy-spawn rebalance in Ashlands, and a Unity engine upgrade, alongside fixes. The release is substantial, but its emphasis is the Deep North rather than a wholesale refresh of every existing biome. Iron Gate says the Ocean biome did not receive a specific 1.0 update.

- Explore a bright Norse realm: discover dungeons, slay legendary beasts, and build anywhere as you explore formidable, procedurally-generated lands on your quest to take on Ragnarok.
- Face colossal game-changers: protect the speed of Yggdrasil from a nightly invasion of helthings, and work together with your tribe to withstand the ever-looming threat of the jotnar.
- Forge your Viking Legend: choose your class and take the battle into the wilds as you seek resources to craft epic armor and mighty weaponry. Then, unleash powerful abilities and prepare clever village defenses to give your enemies some nasty surprises.
- Rally the tribe: when the giants arrive, it takes a village to bring them down! Adventure through midgard solo, or form a tribe of up to 10 players in online pve co-op.
- Keep up the fight: throughout the year, limited time seasonal events bring bigger challenges and even mightier treasures to the endgame of midgard, including new ways to progress and unlockable rewards for use across every game.
Should you continue your old world or start over?
Your old saves are not deleted, and Iron Gate says you can continue playing them. New content can appear in an older world, but biome generation works properly only in areas that have not already been explored. As Iron Gate puts it in its July 1, 2026 FAQ: “As usual, your world will receive new content even if it was created before the update, although biome generation will only work properly on areas that have not yet been explored.”
| Choose | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Continue your world | Keeping your character, base, and existing progress | Travel into unvisited areas to encounter new biome generation; previously explored terrain may not generate the new content properly. |
| Start a new world | Experiencing the full progression from the beginning | A fresh run through the game’s earlier survival and biome progression before reaching the Deep North. |
Iron Gate recommends a new world for the best experience, but says players who keep an existing world can head directly toward the Deep North. For a returning player with a developed base or a group invested in a shared save, continuing is a reasonable trade: you keep your progress, but do not get the cleanest version of the world’s full progression.
Is Valheim worth playing now?
For players who enjoy self-directed survival, exploration, combat, food preparation, and building, 1.0 gives the game a more complete endpoint without removing the open-ended play that follows. PC Gamer reviewer Christopher Livingston gave it 90/100 in a review published September 8, 2026. He described a Viking-themed survival game in a procedurally generated open world and praised its self-directed loop across exploration, biome progression, combat, base building, food, and co-op. Livingston also wrote that the game has “an actual ending,” while players can continue in their world afterward. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a consensus score.
The main appeal is still the cycle of preparing, venturing farther, overcoming a biome’s threats, and bringing what you find back to improve your capabilities or your home. Deep North adds another destination and a large set of items and building options, but players who want every earlier biome redesigned should temper expectations: 1.0’s central addition is the final biome, not a comprehensive overhaul of the rest of the map.
How do co-op, crossplay, and saves work?
The official FAQ describes Valheim as a 1–10-player game and says crossplay is supported between all platforms. That makes it possible to play together across supported systems, but crossplay does not mean save files follow you everywhere. Iron Gate says Xbox saves can be accessed on PC when you launch the game from the Microsoft Store; beyond that, it does not provide cross-platform save-file syncing.
For a group deciding whether to restart, the world choice matters more than platform matching: agree on whether everyone wants a fresh progression or to keep the existing shared world, and confirm which player’s save is the one the group intends to use.

Which platforms and stores carry Valheim 1.0?
Coffee Stain’s release announcement lists PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Linux, and Mac. Iron Gate’s FAQ names Steam, the Mac App Store, Humble, and Microsoft Store for PC storefronts, with platform-specific digital storefronts for consoles. Store availability can vary by platform and region.
What does Valheim 1.0 cost?
Iron Gate’s FAQ states a U.S. price of $29.99 and notes that regional differences may apply. Treat that as the FAQ’s stated price, not a verified live price for every store or region. Players who already own the Early Access version receive the updated game without buying it again.
Do achievements, mods, and performance change with 1.0?
Achievements and older progress
Achievement tracking begins when you download 1.0. Earlier boss kills do not count toward achievements that require a kill, so a returning character may need to defeat those bosses again for the relevant achievements. Most devcommands and some world modifiers make a character or world ineligible for achievements; characters that used cheats before 1.0 are marked.
Mods
Mods are not officially supported. Iron Gate warned that compatibility could lag after release, said consoles would have no mod support, and said Steam Workshop would not be featured for 1.0. If a mod is important to your current setup, check whether its creator has updated it before relying on it in a 1.0 world.
Optimization and ongoing updates
Iron Gate says some optimizations reduce zone-loading microstutters and speed up saving, but large builds are not expected to benefit greatly. The studio says further optimization work is planned. It also expects bug fixes and quality-of-life updates to continue; the duration of support and any possible future content remain undecided. Version 1.0 marks the end of Early Access, not a promise that the game will receive no further patches.
Quick Recap
Verdict: who should play Valheim 1.0?
- New players: A fresh world offers the intended start-to-finish progression, now with the Deep North as the final biome.
- Returning players with a developed save: Keep the old world if preserving your build and progress matters more than a pristine generation of new areas.
- Co-op groups: Crossplay supports playing together across platforms, but decide on a shared world and account for the limited save syncing.
- Players focused on building: The new build pieces and items add more options, while the stated optimization improvements are not expected to help large builds greatly.
