Use the values in the running server’s ServerHostSettings.json as the authority. Forward the game port for direct connections; forward both UDP ports, allow both through the computer’s firewall, and enable listing options when the server must appear in public browser results.

Which ports does a V Rising server use?
V Rising separates player traffic from server-list discovery. The dedicated server’s Port carries the actual game session, while QueryPort answers Steam server-browser queries. Stunlock’s maintained PC instructions document these default values:

The defaults are not guarantees. You can change either V Rising port in configuration, with environment variables, or at startup. The official instructions show -gamePort and -queryPort command-line overrides. Whatever values the running process receives must match the host firewall rule, router forwarding rule and any address you give to players. A mismatch on even one layer makes the port appear closed.
Stunlock’s dedicated-server documentation describes the free application and its settings in the current 1.1.x PC instructions. The older 1.0.x instructions state the distinction plainly: both query and game ports are needed for server-list visibility, whereas opening the game port alone is enough for direct connection.

Find the ports your running server actually uses
Do not assume 9876 and 9877 until you have checked the active configuration. Updates, copied scripts and launch parameters can change the values or point the process at a different file.
Locate the two settings files
The current PC instructions identify ServerHostSettings.json and ServerGameSettings.json as the main files. The installation defaults are under VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings/. Local overrides are read from:
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowStunlock StudiosVRisingServerSettings
If the server was started with -persistentDataPath, use the custom directory supplied by that parameter instead. A value in an override directory or startup script can supersede the file in the installation folder. Keep your intentional edits in the override location (or in a copied startup script) so a server update does not silently replace them.

Read Port and QueryPort
- Stop the dedicated server cleanly so you are not editing a file while it is being rewritten.
- Open the
ServerHostSettings.jsonfile used by the launch command. - Record the numeric values beside
PortandQueryPort. If a startup script supplies-gamePortor-queryPort, treat those arguments as the effective values. - Restart the server and verify that no second configuration path is being loaded. Keep one written record of the final pair for the firewall and router entries.
JSON syntax matters: preserve quotation marks, commas and braces. An invalid file can make the server fall back to defaults or fail to start, creating the illusion that forwarding is broken.
Port-forwarding procedure for a home-hosted server
Port forwarding has four separate pieces: a stable private address for the host computer, an allowed inbound rule on that computer, matching UDP rules on the router, and a reachable public address. Complete them in this order.
1. Give the server computer a stable LAN address
In the router’s DHCP or LAN menu, create a DHCP reservation for the computer running V Rising. A reservation is preferable to manually setting an address because it keeps the router’s lease table consistent. Note the resulting private address, such as 192.168.1.50. If the address changes after a reboot, the router may forward correctly to a different device and players will still fail to connect.
2. Confirm the host configuration
Write down the effective game and query ports from ServerHostSettings.json and any launch arguments. If you changed either number, use the changed number everywhere below. Do not create rules for the defaults merely because they are commonly documented.

3. Allow inbound UDP on the server computer
Create inbound firewall rules on the operating system for the configured game UDP port and, when listing is required, the configured query UDP port. Limit the rule to the dedicated-server application or the intended network profiles where your firewall supports that choice. The query listener is not TCP; a TCP-only rule does not satisfy it.
4. Forward UDP ports on the router
Open the router’s Port Forwarding, NAT, Virtual Server or similarly named page. Add one rule for the game port and a second rule for the query port when browser listing is needed:

Forwarding an external number to a different internal number is possible on some routers, but using identical values removes a common troubleshooting variable. Never target a console, another PC or an old DHCP address.
5. Enable listing services when appropriate
In ServerHostSettings.json, review the current listing switches, including ListOnSteam and/or ListOnEOS. A server can be intentionally private even when its ports are open. Enable only the service(s) your players use, save the file and restart the server.

6. Test in two stages
- From another device on the same LAN, connect to the server’s private address and game port. This confirms the server process and local firewall before the router is involved.
- From a genuinely external network, such as a phone hotspot, use the public IPv4 address and game port for a direct connection. Then check the browser after allowing time for registration.
Testing the public address from inside your own LAN is not conclusive. Routers without NAT loopback (also called hairpin NAT) can reject that path while outside players connect normally.

Direct connection and server-list visibility are different tests
A direct connection uses the public address and game Port. If that works, gameplay traffic is reaching the server, but it says nothing about Steam’s query path. Browser visibility requires the query UDP port to reach the same host and requires the relevant listing setting to be enabled.
A newly started server may take a few minutes to appear in the list. During that delay, give players the external IP address and game port for a direct test. If direct connection succeeds but the entry never appears, investigate QueryPort, its UDP firewall rule, the router rule and ListOnSteam/ListOnEOS rather than changing the game port.
Troubleshooting: symptom-to-cause branches
Players cannot connect directly
- Only TCP was forwarded: change the game rule to UDP. V Rising gameplay and query listeners are documented as UDP.
- The target address is wrong: compare the router destination with the server computer’s current reserved private address.
- The host firewall is blocking traffic: verify an inbound UDP rule exists on the computer, not just on the router.
- The process is using another port: recheck startup arguments, environment variables and the active override directory; then align every rule with the effective value.
- The ISP uses CGNAT or DS-Lite: inbound forwarding may not work because the router lacks a directly reachable public IPv4 address. Ask the ISP whether a public IPv4 option is available.
The server works by direct address but is absent from the browser
- Forward and allow the configured
QueryPortover UDP. - Confirm the corresponding listing option is enabled.
- Wait several minutes after launch before judging the result.
- Check that the query rule points to the same private host as the game rule.
It worked until a restart or update
The LAN address may have changed, or the server may now be reading an installation file instead of your override. Reapply the DHCP reservation, inspect -persistentDataPath, and keep custom settings outside the directory that updates replace.
Local testing fails through the public address
Use the private address for same-LAN testing and an external network for public testing. A failed hairpin connection is a router behavior, not proof that outside players are blocked.
RCON is a separate administration service
RCON is not required for players. The current official instructions show a TCP RCON example using port 25575 and require a password. Expose it only when you need remote administration. If enabled, create a separate TCP firewall and forwarding rule, use a strong unique password, restrict source addresses where the router allows it, and avoid treating RCON as part of the normal two-port player setup. Never substitute the RCON port for Port or QueryPort.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
The V Rising Dedicated Server application is freely available through Steam’s Tools section. Running it at home gives you control over files, launch arguments, backups and restarts, but you must maintain the computer, firewall, router and network reachability.

Managed hosting is the practical alternative when your ISP does not provide a usable public IPv4 address, your router cannot be configured, or you do not want to handle updates and restarts. Stunlock’s “How to Host a Server” article, updated November 27, 2024, names POCKETHOST as one service for renting and managing a V Rising server; check the provider’s current terms, location options and backup policy before committing.
