Minimum VPS Requirements for Running Tomcat and MongoDB

A practical guide to sizing one VPS for Tomcat and MongoDB, with documented software constraints, recommended starting tiers, 2 GB guidance, swap settings, storage advice and monitoring triggers.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a small, single-node Tomcat and MongoDB deployment, start with 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of RAM, and SSD or NVMe storage on a supported Linux distribution. That is an engineering starting point, not a vendor-published minimum. Your actual requirement depends on the Java heap, MongoDB working set and indexes, request concurrency, connection count, backup retention, and storage latency.

A 2 GB VPS can run a carefully constrained development installation, but it leaves little room for the operating system, Java native memory, Tomcat threads, MongoDB’s cache, monitoring, and temporary backup or maintenance work. Treat 4 GB as the practical floor for light production and scale after observing the workload.

What “minimum VPS requirements” really means

There is no universal VPS size that Apache or MongoDB certifies for every combined deployment. Software prerequisites and capacity requirements are different:

  • Prerequisites determine whether the software can start and operate, such as Java version, CPU instruction support, operating-system compatibility, and filesystem behavior.
  • Capacity determines whether the application remains responsive as data, traffic, indexes, threads, and backups grow.

The figures in this article separate documented constraints from practical sizing inferences. The 2-vCPU/4-GB starting point is intended for light traffic on one server. It should not be treated as a guarantee for a particular response time, dataset size, or concurrent-user count.

Documented requirements for Tomcat

Java version

The Apache Tomcat 11.0.26 README states: “Tomcat 11.0 requires Java 17 or later.” Install a Java runtime supported by your chosen Tomcat major version before sizing the VPS around it. A newer Tomcat release or a different major version can have different Java requirements, so verify the requirement for the exact version you deploy.

Memory guidance

Apache’s memory guidance says, “if your computer has less than 128MB of ram – you will probably have trouble.” This is a warning about an extremely constrained machine, not a realistic budget for a Tomcat-and-MongoDB production server. The Tomcat HowTo gives an example JVM configuration of -Xms256m -Xmx256m and explicitly warns that physical RAM must also cover the operating system and the application.

The heap is only one part of Tomcat’s memory use. The JVM also needs native memory, metaspace, thread stacks, class metadata, direct buffers, and room for garbage collection. A heap setting that appears to fit on paper can still exhaust the VPS when request threads, TLS, logging, agents, or file caches are active.

Documented requirements for MongoDB

CPU architecture and instruction support

MongoDB 5.0 and later requires supported x86_64 microarchitectures with AVX on applicable Intel and AMD systems. On arm64, the processor must provide ARMv8.2-A or later. Check the actual virtual CPU exposed by the VPS provider; a label such as “x86” does not by itself prove that the required instruction set is available.

If the CPU does not meet the requirement, MongoDB may fail during startup or behave incompatibly with the supported binaries. Confirm the architecture and instruction flags on the target image before committing to a plan, especially on older hosts and unusual virtual-machine platforms.

Operating system and filesystem

Use an operating system supported by the MongoDB version you install. Filesystem behavior matters as well: MongoDB’s documented requirements include a filesystem that supports fsync() on directories. A VPS image can appear normal while its storage layer, mount options, or provider-specific filesystem behavior creates durability or performance problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Swap behavior

MongoDB’s production notes say it performs best when swapping can be avoided or kept to a minimum. They recommend a Linux vm.swappiness value of 1 or 0, depending on the application and cluster’s needs. This setting does not create memory; it only influences when Linux prefers swap. You still need enough physical RAM to hold the operating system, Java process, MongoDB process, and normal workload.

Practical VPS starting points

The following tiers are engineering recommendations based on the documented constraints and the usual memory and CPU contention that occurs when both services share one host. They are not published minimum SKUs.

Workload Starting point What the allocation assumes
Development or test 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM Small datasets, light traffic, and acceptance of contention during builds, imports, or tests.
Small single-node production 2–4 vCPU, 4–8 GB RAM Headroom for the OS, a deliberately sized Tomcat heap, MongoDB cache, monitoring, and backup activity; SSD or NVMe storage.
Heavier production 4 or more vCPU, 8 GB or more RAM Measured working-set and index requirements, higher concurrency, and storage latency that has been tested under load.

Move upward when measurements show sustained memory pressure, garbage-collection pauses, CPU saturation, rising disk latency, or a working set that no longer fits comfortably in available memory. If the database and application have different growth rates, separate them onto different nodes rather than continually enlarging a shared VPS.

Is 2 GB of RAM enough?

Two gigabytes can be workable for a disposable test instance with a small MongoDB dataset, low connection counts, and a tightly limited Tomcat heap. It is a poor default for production because both services compete with the operating system and each other. A backup, index build, deployment, log burst, or temporary traffic increase can consume the remaining margin.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

If you must use 2 GB, keep the dataset and heap deliberately small, disable unnecessary agents, schedule maintenance for quiet periods, and monitor for reclaim and swap activity. Do not interpret a server that starts successfully as a server that is adequately sized. The practical 4-GB starting point exists to provide operating headroom, not because either product declares 4 GB as a hard minimum.

Can Tomcat and MongoDB share one VPS?

Yes. A single node is reasonable for development, staging, and small applications where a database outage and an application outage have the same failure boundary. It reduces administration and network hops, but it couples two memory-sensitive workloads.

Benefits

  • One operating-system image, firewall, patch schedule, and monitoring target.
  • No private-network configuration between application and database nodes.
  • Lower cost and simpler deployment for a small, low-traffic service.

Risks

  • A Java heap expansion or garbage-collection event can compete with MongoDB’s memory needs.
  • MongoDB checkpoints, index builds, imports, and backups can create disk contention for Tomcat logs and static files.
  • A kernel, filesystem, or VPS failure takes down both tiers at once.
  • Resource limits are harder to attribute because application and database symptoms appear together.

Separate the services when uptime requirements, dataset growth, backup load, or sustained concurrency make those trade-offs unacceptable. A replica topology and backup design should be chosen independently of the minimum compute decision.

How to allocate memory deliberately

Start with a budget rather than assigning all available RAM to the Java heap or relying on MongoDB to reclaim memory. Reserve room for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Linux and its filesystem cache.
  • Tomcat’s heap plus JVM native memory, metaspace, thread stacks, and direct buffers.
  • MongoDB’s process and working set, including indexes that are frequently read.
  • Monitoring, log rotation, package updates, compression, and backup utilities.
  • Short-lived peaks such as deployments, restores, index creation, and traffic bursts.

Set CATALINA_OPTS explicitly and change it only after observing heap occupancy and garbage-collection behavior. The Apache example of -Xms256m -Xmx256m demonstrates syntax, not a recommendation for every application. A larger heap can reduce application-level out-of-memory errors while leaving too little memory for MongoDB; a smaller heap can cause excessive collection and latency. The correct values depend on the application and must be measured.

Storage is part of the minimum

Choose SSD- or NVMe-backed storage. Capacity is workload-specific: MongoDB data files, indexes, journal and temporary files, Tomcat logs, operating-system packages, and at least one backup copy all consume space. The official constraints do not establish a universal disk-size or IOPS minimum, so a nominal disk capacity is not enough to predict performance.

Measure latency and I/O behavior on the actual VPS class. A database can remain CPU-idle while requests wait on storage. Watch latency during concurrent reads and writes, log rotation, backups, and index operations rather than relying only on a provider’s advertised maximum IOPS. Confirm that the filesystem and mount configuration satisfy MongoDB’s durability requirements, including directory fsync() support.

Swap and Linux configuration

For a production-style Linux host, inspect memory pressure and configure swappiness deliberately. Where appropriate for your workload, a setting of 1 or 0 follows MongoDB’s production guidance:

sudo sysctl -w vm.swappiness=1
printf 'vm.swappiness=1n' | sudo tee /etc/sysctl.d/99-mongodb.conf
sudo sysctl --system

Use 0 only when you understand the host’s out-of-memory behavior and have validated the application under pressure. Preventing routine swapping is different from eliminating all emergency safety mechanisms. Monitor available memory, major page faults, swap-in and swap-out activity, MongoDB latency, and JVM garbage-collection pauses after changing the setting.

Step-by-step deployment checklist

  1. Choose the image and CPU. Select a supported Linux distribution, verify the Tomcat Java requirement, and confirm AVX-capable x86_64 or ARMv8.2-A-or-newer support for your MongoDB release.
  2. Validate storage. Use SSD or NVMe-backed volumes, check free capacity for data and backups, and verify filesystem behavior required by MongoDB.
  3. Install compatible runtimes. Install the Java version required by the exact Tomcat major release and the MongoDB server package supported on the operating system.
  4. Set JVM limits. Define CATALINA_OPTS with an intentional -Xms and -Xmx; leave physical RAM for the OS, MongoDB, native memory, and operational tools.
  5. Configure memory pressure. Set swappiness to 1 or 0 when appropriate, then observe the result rather than assuming the setting solves an undersized VPS.
  6. Protect the services. Restrict database network access, enable host firewall rules, use encrypted administrative access, and keep operating-system and application updates scheduled.
  7. Plan backups before production. Account for backup storage, temporary dump or snapshot space, restore time, and the I/O load created while backups run.
  8. Load-test representative traffic. Include realistic request concurrency, MongoDB queries, index use, writes, log volume, and backup activity. Record CPU, memory, disk latency, JVM pauses, and database response time.

What to monitor before increasing the VPS

Use measurements to identify the bottleneck instead of adding vCPUs or RAM blindly.

  • CPU: sustained utilization, run-queue pressure, and whether Java compilation, garbage collection, or MongoDB operations consume the cycles.
  • Memory: available RAM, reclaim activity, swap-in and swap-out, JVM heap occupancy, native-memory growth, and MongoDB resident usage.
  • Java: garbage-collection pause duration, allocation rate, thread counts, request queueing, and out-of-memory events.
  • MongoDB: working-set and index fit, cache pressure, operation latency, connection count, lock or concurrency symptoms, and slow queries.
  • Storage: read/write latency, queue depth, filesystem fullness, journal behavior, and performance during backups or index builds.

Scale RAM when the working set and JVM cannot coexist without reclaim or swap. Scale CPU when runnable work remains queued after memory and query issues are addressed. Improve storage or separate nodes when latency spikes during database writes, backups, or application logging.

Common sizing mistakes and fixes

Giving Tomcat all available RAM

A large -Xmx does not reserve memory for MongoDB or the kernel. Reduce the heap to a measured level and retain headroom for native allocations and database activity.

Checking only that both services start

Startup success says nothing about behavior during concurrent requests, imports, index creation, or backups. Run representative load and inspect latency and memory pressure.

Ignoring CPU instruction support

A cheap VPS can fail MongoDB’s architecture requirement even when it offers enough advertised vCPUs. Verify AVX on applicable x86_64 systems and ARMv8.2-A or newer on arm64.

Treating swap as extra RAM

Swap can hide an undersized configuration while adding latency. Follow MongoDB’s guidance to avoid or minimize swapping and fix the underlying capacity problem.

Choosing disk capacity without testing latency

Enough gigabytes do not guarantee acceptable database performance. Test the actual storage class and include backup and maintenance workloads.

Production readiness checklist

  • Tomcat’s Java version matches the exact Tomcat major release; Tomcat 11 requires Java 17 or later.
  • The VPS CPU meets MongoDB’s architecture and instruction-set requirements.
  • The operating system and filesystem are supported, including required directory synchronization behavior.
  • Tomcat heap, native memory, MongoDB cache, OS usage, monitoring, and backup activity fit within physical RAM with observed headroom.
  • Swapping is avoided or minimized, and memory pressure is monitored continuously.
  • SSD or NVMe performance has been measured under representative reads, writes, logs, and backups.
  • Backups have been tested by restoring them, not merely created.
  • Firewalling, updates, credentials, TLS decisions, and alerting are in place.
  • A trigger for separating Tomcat and MongoDB or adding replica capacity is documented before growth makes the decision urgent.

For most small deployments, provision 2 vCPUs and 4 GB RAM as the initial shared host, then validate it with real workload measurements. Move to 2–4 vCPUs and 4–8 GB RAM for a small production service when the application, database, and operational tasks need more headroom. Larger or busier systems should be sized from measured working-set, concurrency, CPU, and storage data rather than from a fixed “minimum” number.
