What V Rising RCON does
RCON (Remote Console) is a separate TCP management interface for a V Rising dedicated server. An RCON client authenticates with the password configured for that interface and sends server-management commands remotely. It is useful when the server is running without a graphical session, when several administrators need a consistent tool, or when you want to schedule announcements and shutdowns without joining the world.

The official 1.0.x command table describes a focused feature set rather than a complete replacement for in-game administration. The documented operations cover broadcasts, restart notices, shutdown scheduling, server name and description changes, server-password changes, and basic status information. Character, clan, inventory, ban, teleport, and other gameplay administration is not listed as an RCON function.

The password is mandatory whenever RCON is enabled; an empty password is not a valid enabled configuration. RCON communicates over TCP, and the port can be changed to any valid TCP port that is available on the host.
Current settings documentation also supports BindAddress, which lets you select the network interface on which RCON listens. Binding to a private or loopback interface can reduce exposure when administrators connect from the same machine or through a private management network.

Enable RCON in ServerHostSettings.json (1.0.x)
1. Find the server’s settings file
On Windows, open File Explorer and paste the path above into the address bar. If the server runs under a service account, scheduled task, or another Windows user, %USERPROFILE% resolves to that account’s profile, not necessarily the profile of the person currently logged in. Confirm that you are editing the file used by the dedicated-server process.
2. Add or edit the Rcon object
Insert the following object inside the top-level JSON object, or edit the existing Rcon object:

}Enabled must be true. Replace somepassword with a private value; do not leave the string empty. The number 25575 is an example port from the official configuration pattern, not a requirement. You may select another valid TCP port if it does not conflict with another service.

JSON syntax still applies. If the Rcon object is followed by another top-level property, keep the comma after its closing brace. Use straight quotation marks, and do not add comments inside the JSON file.
3. Decide whether to bind a specific interface
On versions whose settings reference includes it, add BindAddress to the RCON object when the listener should use a particular interface. A loopback address is appropriate for a client running on the same host; a private LAN address can restrict access to that network. If you need internet access, bind only to the interface and exposure your network design requires rather than making every interface reachable by default.
4. Save and restart the dedicated server
Stop the dedicated server cleanly, save the file, and start the server again. The process reads these settings at startup; changing the file while it is running does not by itself establish a new listener. Keep the exact port and password you configured for the client connection.
Use 1.1.x overrides instead of editing the file
In 1.1.x, the settings can be overridden with environment variables or command-line switches. This is useful for service managers, containers, launch scripts, and hosts where configuration files are generated or managed separately. The override names are:

Use one configuration authority consistently. If a launch script supplies an override, changing the JSON file may appear to have no effect because the command-line or environment value wins for that run. Protect launch files and service definitions just as carefully as the JSON file because they can contain the RCON password.

Open the TCP path safely
Allow the port on the server host
Create an inbound firewall rule for the selected TCP port on the machine running the dedicated server. The exact labels and steps differ between Windows Firewall, Linux firewall tools, and hosting control panels, so use the procedure appropriate to your operating system. Permit only the source networks that need RCON when your firewall supports scoped rules.
Forward the port only for remote internet access
If the server is behind a router and the administrator connects from outside the local network, forward the same TCP port to the server’s internal address. Port forwarding is not needed for a client on the server itself and normally is not needed for a client on the same LAN, provided the firewall permits the connection. A forwarded management port increases exposure; avoid forwarding it to a changing workstation address and do not publish the password.
Keep the listener narrow
- Use a long, unique RCON password that is not reused for the game, operating system, or hosting account.
- Choose a non-conflicting TCP port and document it for administrators without posting it publicly.
- Use
BindAddressor an equivalent network rule to limit which interface can accept RCON where possible. - Restrict firewall sources to a VPN, management subnet, or known administrator addresses when practical.
- Remove temporary forwarding and firewall exceptions after maintenance.
Connect with mcrcon
Stunlock’s instructions identify mcrcon as a client known to work with V Rising. Supply three values: the server address, the configured RCON TCP port, and the RCON password. For a local connection, the address is commonly the server’s loopback address; for a LAN or remote connection, use the reachable address permitted by your network design.
A typical mcrcon command-line form is:
mcrcon -H <server-address> -P <rcon-port> -p <rcon-password>Replace each placeholder with the actual values, and quote a password if your shell treats any of its characters specially. For the configuration example above, a local test would use the equivalent of:

A successful connection means the TCP path is open and the password was accepted; it does not grant in-game character powers that RCON does not implement.

Documented RCON commands
The following command set is the official 1.0.x table. Run help first on a server to see the commands exposed by that particular build. Parameters in angle brackets are required; parameters in square brackets are optional. A dash indicates that the command takes no parameter.

How to use the command groups
Check the server before making a change
Run help without an argument to obtain the command list exposed by the running process. Run help followed by a command when you need its parameter syntax. version confirms the server build, while time reports the server’s current time. These checks are useful after an update or when several launch configurations may be in use.
Communicate with connected players
announce sends a free-form message to everyone currently connected. Use it for maintenance notices, rule reminders, or a final warning before a restart. announcerestart sends the localized restart announcement and accepts the number of minutes to communicate. Keep the wording and timing consistent with your actual maintenance window; an announcement does not itself stop the server.
Schedule or cancel a shutdown
shutdown accepts the documented message-times value followed by the message. Because the syntax combines timing information and free-form text, use help shutdown on the running build before automating it and quote a message containing spaces according to your client’s rules. If plans change, cancelshutdown stops an active schedule and can include an optional message to explain the cancellation.
Change visible server metadata
name changes the server name at runtime, and description changes the server description. These commands affect the values players see from the server, but they do not rewrite unrelated gameplay settings. Record the intended values in your deployment notes if the server is recreated from a template.
Manage the game-server password
password can set or change the server password, while password --clear clears it. This is the password players use for the game server, not the RCON password used to authenticate the management connection. Treat the command and its output as sensitive, and verify that all intended players receive a new password through a private channel.

RCON is not the same as in-game admin access
V Rising has a separate authorization path for game-admin commands. Stunlock’s hosting guidance says to add an administrator’s Steam ID to adminlist.txt in the save-data Settings folder. The in-game console must also be enabled before those commands can be used. The dedicated-server instructions describe authenticating in that console with adminauth.
Consequently, a working RCON login does not prove that a Steam account is authorized for in-game administration, and adding a Steam ID to adminlist.txt does not configure the RCON listener. Set up both systems when you need remote server management and in-world administrative commands.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
The right deployment depends on whether you want control of the machine or relief from network and operations work. A managed V Rising host can provide a hosted RCON workflow, but verify its current feature set, port policy, backup terms, and support before committing. The following comparison isolates the decisions that affect RCON specifically.

Troubleshoot a failed RCON connection
Connection refused or timeout
- Confirm the dedicated server restarted after the RCON settings were saved.
- Check that the client is using the configured TCP port, not the game’s player-connection port.
- Verify the host firewall allows inbound TCP on that port.
- For an off-site administrator, verify that the router forwards the same external port to the server machine’s current internal address.
- If
BindAddressis set, make sure the client is connecting through an address served by that interface.
Authentication fails
- Compare the client password with the exact value in the active JSON, environment, or command-line configuration.
- Check for a command-line or environment override that replaces the file value on startup.
- Ensure the password is not empty and that shell quoting has not altered special characters.
- Do not confuse the RCON password with the game-server password changed by the
passwordcommand.
The command is unknown or behaves differently
- Run
helpto see what the current server build exposes. - Use
helpwith the command name to inspect its parameter form. - Run
versionand compare the result with the configuration guidance for your server release; the published table is specifically identified as 1.0.x. - Check spacing and quoting for messages, descriptions, and shutdown text.
Players cannot see a change
Announcements are delivered to connected players, while name and description changes affect server metadata. A player who is offline may not observe an announcement that was sent before joining. For a password change, communicate the new game-server password separately; changing it through RCON does not reveal it to players automatically.

- Record the server version, RCON port, bind address, and the location of the active configuration.
- Store the RCON password in a restricted password manager rather than a shared chat or public documentation.
- Document who can change router forwarding and firewall rules.
- Keep the Steam IDs and
adminlist.txtprocess separate from RCON credentials. - Test a local RCON connection and, if required, a remote connection after every network or hosting change.
- Practice cancelling a scheduled shutdown before using it during a live maintenance window.
- Include save backups and a recovery owner in the maintenance plan; RCON commands do not substitute for backups.
Bottom line
For a self-hosted V Rising server, the reliable sequence is: configure a non-empty RCON password and TCP port, restart the server, permit only the necessary network path, and connect with an RCON client. Use the documented commands for announcements, shutdown scheduling, metadata, password changes, version, and time. Configure adminlist.txt and the in-game console separately when you need game-admin powers.
