What a jack o’Lantern is
A jack o’Lantern is a placeable light block made from a carved pumpkin and a torch. Its light level is 15, the highest light level available in Minecraft. That makes it suitable for bright entrances, paths, underwater rooms and decorative builds where you want a solid block rather than a handheld-looking torch.

Unlike a carved pumpkin, a jack o’Lantern cannot be worn as headgear. It is a world block: you place it on the ground, against another block or in another valid position, and its face points according to the direction in which you place it. It does not require a supporting block, so you can use it in suspended or integrated designs that would be awkward with ordinary torches.
Materials and preparation
Gather these items before starting:

Pumpkins can be found naturally, obtained from shipwrecks, bought or received from traders, or grown from pumpkin seeds. If you find a pumpkin patch, harvest at least one whole pumpkin before carving it; the carving action changes the placed block into a carved pumpkin.

How to craft a jack o’Lantern
1. Find or grow a pumpkin
Locate a pumpkin in the world or grow one from seeds. You need the pumpkin itself, not only a seed or a stem. Pick up the block and place it somewhere accessible so you can use the shears on it.
2. Carve the placed pumpkin
Hold shears and use them on the pumpkin while it is placed. The face appears on the block, creating a carved pumpkin. Carving consumes durability from the shears, so make sure the tool has enough durability for the pumpkins you plan to process.
3. Obtain one torch
Keep a torch in your inventory for the crafting step. The recipe specifically needs a torch; another light-emitting block does not substitute for it.
4. Combine the carved pumpkin and torch
Open a crafting grid and place the carved pumpkin and one torch in any two available slots. The recipe is shapeless, so their positions do not matter. The output is one jack o’Lantern.
You can craft several at once by placing matching pairs of carved pumpkins and torches into the grid as your available slots allow. Each completed pair produces one block.

Why the recipe sometimes fails
- You used an ordinary pumpkin: Use shears on the placed block first. An uncarved pumpkin will not satisfy the jack o’Lantern recipe.
- You used the wrong light item: The ingredient is one torch. A different light source will not produce the same output.
- You tried to carve an inventory item: The pumpkin must be placed in the world when you use the shears.
- The output is not visible: Check that both ingredients are in the same crafting grid and that there is an empty inventory slot for the result.
- The face points the wrong way: Remove and replace the block while aiming from the direction you want the face to look.
Light, water and snow mechanics
Maximum brightness
A jack o’Lantern emits light level 15, the game’s maximum. It therefore works as a high-output permanent light source for bases, tunnels, entrances and decorative structures. Because the light comes from a full block, you can incorporate it into walls, floors or ceilings instead of leaving a torch visibly mounted on a surface.

Underwater lighting
Jack o’Lanterns remain brightly lit underwater. This makes them useful for submerged entrances, glass viewing rooms, underwater corridors and ocean-floor work areas. Place the block after clearing the location and check the direction of its face from outside the structure; the block continues to provide light once surrounded by water.
Melting snow and ice
The block melts snow and ice around it. Use that behavior when you need a clear route through a cold biome, want to keep an entrance open, or are building a warm-looking settlement in a snowy landscape. The effect is local to the area around the block, so place additional jack o’Lanterns along a long path rather than assuming one block will clear an entire road.
Using a jack o’Lantern to build golems
The jack o’Lantern can be the head that completes a snow-golem or iron-golem structure. The order matters: construct the body first and place the jack o’Lantern last. If you put the head on before the body is complete, the golem will not spawn when you finish the remaining blocks.
Snow golem
- Place two snow blocks vertically, one on top of the other.
- Make sure the top position is clear and the structure is in a location where a snow golem can spawn.
- Place the jack o’Lantern on top as the final block.
The golem should appear as soon as the valid structure is completed. If it does not, remove the head and rebuild the two-block body in an unobstructed space, then place the jack o’Lantern again.

Iron golem
- Build the standard iron-golem body from four iron blocks: a three-block horizontal bar with one block centered beneath it, forming a T shape.
- Leave the center position above the T clear for the head.
- Place the jack o’Lantern last in that head position.
Use the complete iron-block arrangement before placing the head. Nearby blocks, cramped spaces or an incorrect T shape can prevent the golem from appearing even when the jack o’Lantern itself is valid.
Copper golem configurations
Current reference material also lists copper-golem configurations that use a jack o’Lantern as the final head block. Copper-golem availability and the exact build pattern depend on the Minecraft edition and version you are playing, so follow the pattern shown by that version’s in-game guidance. The placement rule remains the same: assemble the body first and add the jack o’Lantern last.
Where jack o’Lanterns spawn naturally
You do not have to craft every jack o’Lantern. Pre-made examples can generate in piles of pumpkins in taiga villages and snowy-taiga villages. Village generation is procedural, so one settlement may contain a pile while another does not. Search the village’s pumpkin piles rather than assuming every house or farm will contain one.
Natural generation is useful when you want an early light source and have not yet found shears, a torch or a pumpkin patch. Break the block with an appropriate tool, collect it, and place it wherever you need light. If no village generates one, crafting is the reliable alternative because pumpkins can also be found, grown, obtained from shipwrecks or acquired from traders.

No support block is required
A jack o’Lantern can be placed without a supporting block. That lets you suspend it in an open design, hide it behind a decorative opening, or use it as a ceiling light without building a visible pillar beneath it. The surrounding blocks still need to leave a valid space for placement.

Control the face direction
The carved face follows your placement direction. Before clicking, stand on the side from which you want the face viewed and aim at the target location. If the orientation is wrong, mine the block and place it again; the recipe is not lost when you reposition an already crafted jack o’Lantern.
It is not wearable
A carved pumpkin can be used as headgear, but a jack o’Lantern cannot. Keep a separate carved pumpkin if your build or adventure requires a wearable pumpkin. Convert another carved pumpkin into a jack o’Lantern when you need a light block instead.

Practical build ideas
Underwater bases
Use jack o’Lanterns at the ends of underwater corridors, around airlock entrances and behind glass walls. Their underwater glow makes navigation easier without relying on exposed torches, and the block can be integrated into a wall pattern.
Snow-biome roads
Place them at regular intervals beside a path through a snowy or icy area. They provide maximum light for night travel and melt nearby snow and ice, helping keep the route readable and passable. Put the blocks where their faces reinforce the direction of travel or the visual theme of the settlement.
Entrances and thresholds
A jack o’Lantern makes a clear marker for mine entrances, village gates and Nether portals. Because it needs no support, you can mount one above an opening or embed it in a surrounding frame while keeping the entrance unobstructed.
Hidden lighting
Build the block into a floor, wall or ceiling pattern and cover or frame it with blocks that preserve the light path in your design. Test the finished room at night so you can see whether additional blocks are needed; the jack o’Lantern itself supplies the maximum light level, but walls and ceilings can still block where that light reaches.
Choosing between a jack o’Lantern and related blocks
Use the following decision rules when selecting a pumpkin-based or torch-based solution:
- Choose a jack o’Lantern when you need maximum light, underwater illumination, snow or ice melting, a golem head, or a block that can stand without support.
- Choose a carved pumpkin when you need wearable headgear. Convert it with a torch only when a placeable light or golem head is more useful.
- Keep torches available even if your final design uses jack o’Lanterns, because a torch is a required ingredient for every block you craft.
- Use another decorative light source when its shape or texture fits your build better and you do not need the jack o’Lantern’s underwater, snow-melting or golem functions.
The important trade-off is functional: the jack o’Lantern combines a torch-based recipe with a solid block, maximum brightness and golem compatibility, while its pumpkin face may not suit every visual style and it cannot be worn.
Troubleshooting golems and lighting
A golem does not appear
- Confirm that the body uses the correct blocks and arrangement for that golem.
- Remove the jack o’Lantern and place it again only after the body is complete.
- Clear nearby obstructions from the head and body positions.
- For an iron golem, check that the four iron blocks form the required T shape rather than a straight line or offset cross.
- For a snow golem, verify that exactly two snow blocks are stacked beneath the head position.
- If you are attempting a copper golem, confirm that your edition and version support it and that you are following that version’s pattern.
A snowy path stays covered
Make sure the jack o’Lantern is close enough to the snow or ice you want affected. The block melts snow and ice around itself, not every frozen block in a large biome. Add more along the route when the cleared area is too small.
An underwater room is still dark
Check that the placed block is actually a jack o’Lantern rather than an uncarved pumpkin or carved pumpkin. Confirm that it has not been replaced during construction, then add additional jack o’Lanterns where walls, floors or ceilings interrupt the light’s reach.
Version and edition considerations
The core recipe—carved pumpkin plus one torch—is consistent for normal crafting, but natural village generation and available golem types can vary by edition and game version. Taiga and snowy-taiga village piles are generated structures, so their presence is not guaranteed in every world. Copper-golem information is especially version-dependent; use the build pattern supported by your installation rather than assuming every edition has the same configuration.
When testing a build in a multiplayer world or a map with custom rules, confirm that the server’s Minecraft version matches the instructions you are following. A missing golem, different village layout or unavailable block may be a version difference rather than a crafting mistake.
