The Tannery costs 160 hides and 8 planks to build, and its standard conversion is 16 hides for 1 leather. Item names and inputs may differ by patch: guides use both “Animal Hide” and “Rugged Hide,” so check the recipe tooltip in your current build before farming a large stockpile.

What you must do, in order
- Advance the opening tutorial until the Blood Altar step is available.
- Use the Blood Altar to select Keely the Frost Archer as your tracked target.
- Follow her blood trail to the Bandit Trapper Camp in Farbane Woods.
- Defeat Keely.
- Open the construction menu and find the Tannery under Production > Refining.
- Build it with the required hides and planks, then load the hide item shown by your current recipe.
There is no separate leather station to discover first. Keely is the progression gate for the Tannery.
How to start tracking Keely
Reach the Blood Altar tutorial step
Keely is not normally selected from an ordinary map marker at the start of a new character. Continue the tutorial until it introduces the Blood Altar. Once the altar is available, it becomes the tool for choosing a V Blood target and following that target’s trail.

Select Keely the Frost Archer
Interact with the Blood Altar and choose Keely the Frost Archer from the available V Blood targets. Confirm the tracking action before leaving your castle. If she is not listed, the tutorial has probably not reached the required altar milestone, or your current progression has not refreshed after a major objective.
Follow the blood trail
With Keely selected, follow the trail into Farbane Woods. Walkthroughs place her at the Bandit Trapper Camp. The trail is more useful than searching the entire region manually because it points toward the active boss encounter rather than merely showing a general biome.

Keely is described in the available guides as level 20. Treat that level as a preparation reference, not a guarantee that every character will experience the encounter identically: your gear, server settings and game version can affect how difficult the fight feels.
Before entering the camp
- Confirm that Keely is still the active Blood Altar target.
- Keep enough inventory space for the encounter’s rewards and any materials collected on the way.
- Use the level indication as a check that you are following the intended early progression route.
- If the camp does not contain the expected boss, leave the area, verify the altar target and follow the trail again instead of assuming the Tannery has failed to unlock.
After the kill
The important result is the unlock notification or newly available crafting entry. Guides disagree on whether the reward is described as a recipe or a schematic, so do not worry about that wording. What matters is that defeating Keely makes the Tannery and basic leather production available in the construction and crafting interfaces.

Building the Tannery
Required materials
The reported construction cost is 160 hides and 8 planks. The hide item is named “Animal Hide” in some guides and “Rugged Hide” in another. Because the 2026 patch state is not confirmed, use the exact item name displayed in your own build rather than relying on an older guide’s terminology.
Exact menu path
- Open the castle construction menu.
- Choose Production.
- Open the Refining category.
- Select Tannery.
- Place the station inside your castle once the material requirements are satisfied.
If Tannery is missing from the menu after Keely’s defeat, close and reopen the construction interface, confirm that the boss kill registered and check the Blood Altar progression. A missing building entry is different from a station that is visible but cannot be placed: the former points to an unlock or refresh problem, while the latter usually means materials are missing.
Turning hides into leather
The standard recipe converts 16 hides into 1 leather. Use that ratio to plan gathering before you return to the castle:
- 1 leather requires 16 hides.
- 5 leather requires 80 hides.
- 10 leather requires 160 hides.
- 20 leather requires 320 hides.
Those figures are direct multiples of the reported recipe and are useful for deciding whether to make a short trip or fill your storage before starting a longer crafting queue. They do not represent a drop-rate estimate; the available material does not establish how many hides a particular animal or camp will provide.

Load the correct input
Open the Tannery and read its current input slot. If your version calls the material Animal Hide, use that item; if it calls it Rugged Hide, use the latter. A renamed or changed input can make a full chest appear unusable even though you have the right kind of resource for an older recipe.
Scaling production
Guides suggest placing two or three Tannery sites when you need leather faster. That is an efficiency option, not a requirement for unlocking the station. They also report a +25% speed bonus from enclosing the Tannery in a room with the Confined Castle Room effect. This speed figure is lower-confidence guide information rather than a confirmed current patch value, so verify the bonus in the room or station interface before redesigning your castle around it.
Where to get hides before you have a Tannery
Wild animals
Early hide sources identified by the guides are wolves, bears and deer. These animals let you gather the construction material before leather production is available. If the game labels the input Rugged Hide in your patch, inspect the item drops from these animals and keep the exact matching item rather than discarding it as a differently named material.
Bandit Trapper Camp
The Bandit Trapper Camp serves two purposes in this progression: it is Keely’s stated location and a reported hide-loot source. After the boss encounter, search the camp’s available loot while you are already there, then compare the item name with the Tannery tooltip in your castle.

Brighthaven Docks is also listed as a hide source. The material does not establish a guaranteed quantity or a fixed drop table, so treat it as another place to collect the required input rather than as a guaranteed fastest route.

A practical early-game workflow
- Save every relevant hide. Do not spend the material on unrelated crafting if the Tannery is your immediate goal.
- Collect planks at the same time. Reaching 160 hides without the 8 planks leaves the station unavailable.
- Complete the Blood Altar milestone. Searching for Keely before the altar step can make the intended tracking route unavailable.
- Track Keely and travel to the Bandit Trapper Camp. Use the blood trail instead of guessing her location.
- Defeat Keely, then verify the unlock. Look for the Tannery under Production and Refining.
- Place one station first. Test the current input name and conversion before committing more castle space to additional Tannery sites.
- Queue only the amount you need. The 16-to-1 ratio makes it easy to calculate the hides required for a specific project.
Troubleshooting the unlock
Keely is not selectable
Check that the Blood Altar tutorial objective has been completed. The guides describe the altar as the point at which Keely can be set as a target. If the altar exists but her entry is not available, make sure you are using the character and server progression where the encounter has not already been completed.
The trail leads nowhere
Cancel and reselect Keely at the Blood Altar, then follow the newly displayed trail toward Farbane Woods. A general search of the forest is less reliable than a refreshed active target.
Keely is defeated but the Tannery is absent
Reopen the construction menu and inspect Production > Refining. If it still does not appear, confirm that the boss actually registered as defeated rather than that you only entered the camp or damaged the encounter. Because guides differ in their reward wording, look for the building and leather entry rather than a specific notification label.
The station will not place
Compare your inventory with the displayed construction requirements. The reported cost uses 160 hides and 8 planks, but a patch-dependent item rename can make the hide requirement look different. Make sure you are reading the Tannery’s current tooltip, not a saved screenshot from an older version.
The Tannery rejects your hides
Read the input slot again. “Animal Hide” and “Rugged Hide” are both used in published guides, and the current 2026 input has not been conclusively established. If the station asks for a different name, farm that exact item and check official patch notes for the version running on your server.
Production feels too slow
Adding a second or third Tannery is the straightforward way to run more queues at once. If you use the enclosed-room bonus, verify that the game is actually showing the Confined Castle Room effect; the reported 25% value is not confirmed for every patch.
What is known about thick leather
Basic leather from the Tannery is the early crafting objective described here. A 2024 Steam discussion claims that a separate thick-leather recipe is locked behind Frostmaw the Mountain Terror, but that is a single low-confidence forum claim rather than a confirmed progression rule. Do not treat it as a requirement for unlocking the Tannery or making ordinary leather. If a later recipe asks for thick leather, check the current in-game V Blood reward and recipe descriptions for your version.
Patch and naming caveats for 2026
The core route is consistent across the guides: Keely unlocks the Tannery, the station is built from hides and planks, and the leather recipe uses a 16-to-1 hide conversion. The unresolved part is the exact input label and whether a newer patch changed Animal Hide to Rugged Hide. One recent guide reports the change but is internally inconsistent, and no official patch note confirming it is established here.
