UVC Webcams Are the Best-Supported External Cameras for iPad

A UVC-compliant USB webcam is the best-supported external camera category for USB-C iPads, but compatibility depends on the iPad, connector, and app.

A USB webcam that conforms to the USB Video Class (UVC) standard is the best-supported type of external camera to consider for a USB-C iPad. But no webcam is guaranteed to work in every app: the iPad model, connection, and app’s external-camera support all matter. Apple documents UVC camera support, but the available evidence does not establish a tested best model.

What kind of external camera works with an iPad?

Apple’s developer documentation identifies UVC compliance as the key requirement for external camera devices on iPad. Its WWDC23 session says iPads with USB-C connectors support external cameras and explains that an iPad app can use them to take photos and record video. That establishes a compatible camera category, not compatibility for every webcam listing.

For a product search, look for a UVC USB webcam for iPad and confirm that the manufacturer explicitly states UVC compliance. Apple’s documentation describes the standard; it does not verify individual retail models. Apple Developer: Support external cameras in your iPadOS app and AVCaptureDeviceTypeExternal.

Check the iPad, app, and connection before buying

Confirm the iPad model and port

Check the exact iPad model and whether it has USB-C. Apple’s current support guidance covers USB-C connections to accessories across supported iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini, and iPad models. Do not infer compatibility from the product family name alone; check the specific device. Apple Support: Charge and connect with the USB-C port on your iPad.

Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Confirm the app supports external capture

External camera access happens through an app’s capture support, described by Apple through AVFoundation. A camera working with iPadOS does not mean every camera-enabled app will detect or select it. Check the app’s current documentation or verify the intended workflow before buying. This applies to video-call apps such as FaceTime or Teams as well: support should not be assumed for every app or version.

Match the connector and power needs

A USB-C webcam may connect directly to a compatible iPad. For a USB-A camera, Apple says a USB-C to USB adapter can connect a USB accessory. An adapter solves the connector mismatch; it does not make a non-UVC camera compatible or add external-camera support to an app. A hub can be useful when you need additional ports or charging, but it is not a compatibility fix.

How to choose a webcam for your iPad setup

Once the basic compatibility checks pass, compare options against the way you plan to use the camera:

  • UVC compliance: Look for an explicit statement from the camera maker, rather than relying on a generic claim that the device is USB compatible.
  • App support: Confirm the exact app and workflow you need can capture from an external camera.
  • Connection: Check whether the webcam uses USB-C or USB-A, and whether you need an adapter or hub.
  • Power: Check the camera’s power requirements and whether your planned connection can meet them.
  • Placement and image needs: Consider mounting, field of view, and desired image quality for your setup. These are practical selection criteria, not qualities established for any particular model here.

No comparative tests or verified model-by-model compatibility are established by the cited Apple sources, so a specific webcam cannot responsibly be named as a tested winner.

Live webcam use is different from importing photos

Connecting a digital camera or card reader to import photos is a separate task from using a webcam for live video. Apple’s USB-C support page explains photo import, while its developer materials separately describe live external-camera capture by apps. Photo-transfer support alone does not show that a camera can serve as an iPad webcam.
