The decommissioned U.S. Navy frigate USS Klakring was used as a target during Exercise Atlantic Thunder off northwest Scotland. The Royal Navy confirms that HMS Portland fired a Naval Strike Missile and the ship’s Wildcat helicopter launched Sea Venom missiles at Klakring. A separate report says the frigate sank on 25 September 2026, but the Royal Navy’s account does not identify which strike sank it.

Why use a retired warship as a target?
The Royal Navy described its firings as a test of the weapons’ effectiveness and of the sailors and aircrew who operate them. HMS Portland’s commanding officer, Commander Dafydd Bryden, said the engagement “proved the effectiveness of these systems as well as the sailors and aircrew who operate them.” Royal Navy report, 29 September 2026.
A U.S. Navy account of the 2022 Atlantic Thunder SINKEX, in which combined forces sank the decommissioned ex-USS Boone, describes broader aims: improving combined tactics, targeting, and live-fire proficiency against a surface target at sea. That account also says ships undergo rigorous cleaning before a SINKEX and describes environmental monitoring for the Boone exercise. Those 2022 details do not establish what preparation or environmental measures applied to Klakring in 2026. U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, Atlantic Thunder 22.
