To capture a page through OpenClaw, start with its native openclaw browser screenshot command. OpenClaw documents Playwright-backed browser profiles and screenshot modes for pages and elements. Puppeteer can take screenshots in its own automation API, but the OpenClaw documentation reviewed does not establish it as an interchangeable built-in driver. The distinction matters: use OpenClaw’s browser control for an integrated workflow, and use Playwright or Puppeteer directly when you want standalone browser automation.
Take a screenshot with OpenClaw
OpenClaw’s browser CLI is the direct route when the page is already being controlled through OpenClaw. Choose the appropriate browser profile, open the page, and then use the screenshot command. Exact options and profile support can vary with the installed release; check the OpenClaw browser documentation for the version you run.

- Choose a profile. The documented default is the managed
openclawprofile. OpenClaw also supports profiles that attach to an existing browser session. - Make sure a browser is available. Browser enablement, headless mode, executable paths, and profile settings are configurable. In a container, the browser executable must be present and accessible inside the Gateway container.
- Open the target page with OpenClaw’s browser controls, then capture it using
openclaw browser screenshotwith the mode that fits the job. - Refresh page references after navigation. Take a new snapshot after the page changes before relying on references to controls or elements.
OpenClaw’s documentation describes the command family and flags, but exact argument requirements depend on the installed version and active profile. Consult its current CLI help or the linked browser guide rather than assuming a command copied from another release will work unchanged.

A viewport screenshot, a full-page screenshot, and a clipped element screenshot are different captures. OpenClaw documents --full-page, --ref, and --labels; it also documents CSS --element support for profiles where that mode is available.

| Goal | OpenClaw mode | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Capture the whole page | --full-page |
Cannot be combined with --ref or --element. |
| Capture a referenced element | --ref with a current snapshot reference |
References can become stale after navigation or page changes; take a fresh snapshot. |
| Capture a CSS-selected element | --element |
Support depends on the profile; existing-session profiles do not support CSS --element capture. |
| Annotate page controls | --labels |
Playwright-backed profiles support label projection with full-page, reference, and element-clip modes. Existing-session profiles use a different overlay path and do not return the same annotations. |
Use full-page mode for a long document or page capture. Use a reference or CSS selector when you need a specific region. Do not combine full-page mode with an element-targeted mode; they represent incompatible capture scopes.
What Playwright and Puppeteer do in this workflow
OpenClaw and Playwright
OpenClaw is the integrated control surface in this workflow. Its documented browser profiles include Playwright-backed profiles, and the profile affects capture and label behavior. Playwright’s own screenshot API is also relevant if you are writing a separate automation script rather than asking OpenClaw to control the browser. See the Playwright screenshot guide.
Puppeteer as a separate option
Puppeteer provides its own screenshot API for browser automation; see the Puppeteer screenshot guide. The OpenClaw documentation reviewed here does not document Puppeteer as an equivalent built-in driver. Treat Puppeteer as a standalone automation choice unless documentation for the specific OpenClaw release or extension you use says otherwise.

- Capture the moment: With sharp, vibrant 1080p resolution, every video call looks more natural, with better brightness, richer colors, and smoother motion. Whether you’re leading a meeting or catching up with family, they’ll see you exactly as they should.
- Be heard, loud, and clear: No more muffled audio or repeating yourself. With dual built-in microphones, your voice comes through clear, natural, and balanced—so whether you’re speaking softly or laughing out loud, you sound just right.
- Total privacy, in a snap: When you’re not on a call, just slide the built-in privacy shutter closed, and rest easy knowing your camera is completely off.
- Tilt Degree: -20°~10°; Monitor Thickness: 4 mm ~ 40 mm; Maximum Resolution: 1080P; Frame Rate: 30 fps; FOV: 85°
- Connection: USB-A 2.0; Cable Length: 1.8m Integrated Cable; Power Consumption: 5V/1A
Thus, the libraries are not interchangeable at the integration level: both can capture screenshots when used through their own APIs, while OpenClaw’s documented profile behavior belongs to its browser-control implementation.
Managed browser, existing session, or container
Managed browser
The managed openclaw profile is the documented default. OpenClaw’s configuration supports browser enablement, headless operation, executable-path overrides, and per-profile settings. A managed browser is the natural place to start when OpenClaw should launch and control its own browser.
Existing-session attachment
An existing-session profile attaches to a running browser through its configured connection mechanism rather than launching a managed browser. Its screenshot behavior is not identical to a Playwright-backed managed profile: CSS --element is not supported there, and labels follow a different overlay path without the same returned bounding-box annotations.

Docker and headless deployment
For Docker, OpenClaw documents a browser-enabled image variant that includes Chromium. Chromium must be available within the Gateway container, and any explicit executable path must resolve there—not merely on the host. Browser control must be enabled and the profile configured for the container’s local Chromium. A headless host also needs headless operation configured.
If browser discovery fails after mounting a home or cache directory, check whether that mount is hiding the image’s bundled Playwright-managed Chromium. The OpenClaw Docker documentation describes the browser-enabled image and container considerations.
When standalone Playwright or Puppeteer is a better fit
Use a standalone library when the screenshot is one step in a custom automation program—for example, when your script owns navigation, waits, and file handling rather than using OpenClaw’s browser controls. Choose Playwright when you want to work with the Playwright API documented by OpenClaw’s Playwright-backed profile workflow; choose Puppeteer when your codebase is built around Puppeteer. Neither choice, by itself, makes Puppeteer an OpenClaw profile.

- USB PLUG & PLAY FOR PC, MAC & LAPTOP - USB-C ADAPTER INCLUDED: Connect over USB and start in seconds - no drivers, no software to install. Works with Windows, macOS, and Linux. Includes a USB-A to USB-C adapter for newer USB-C machines too
For an OpenClaw-controlled page, prefer its native screenshot command so the capture uses the active profile and its supported modes. For a standalone script, follow the current library guide for installation, browser setup, and API syntax; those details are separate from OpenClaw’s CLI.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting OpenClaw screenshots
- The browser cannot be found: confirm browser control is enabled, the selected profile is configured, and the executable path exists in the same runtime as the Gateway. In Docker, a host path is not a valid substitute for a browser inside the container.
- Chromium disappeared after a mount: inspect mounted home or cache paths; a mount can obscure the image’s bundled Playwright-managed Chromium.
- A command rejects a flag combination: remove
--refor--elementwhen using--full-page; full-page and targeted captures are separate modes. - CSS element capture is unavailable: check the active profile. Existing-session profiles do not support CSS
--elementcapture. - A reference no longer identifies the right item: take a new page snapshot after navigation or other page changes, then use a current reference. Raw browser target IDs may change during navigation; prefer stable tab IDs or suggested target IDs in longer workflows.
- Labels are missing or differ: verify whether the profile is Playwright-backed or an existing-session profile. Existing-session profiles use a different overlay route and do not return the same annotations.
- Headless capture fails on a server: confirm headless mode is enabled for the deployment and that the configured browser is available to the Gateway process.
Or skip the browser setup
