Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYes, LineageOS can run on supported phones, and it also has Android TV builds for certain devices—but support is tied to the exact model and variant. Check the official device page before downloading anything. A supported phone build will not work on a similar-looking model, and the Banana Pi M5 example is a specific DIY Android TV route, not a way to convert any retail smart TV.
Start by checking your exact device
LineageOS says, “Devices not listed are not supported.” Its Devices index also warns that a build for another device cannot be substituted, even when the models appear nearly identical. Match the model and variant shown on the device page, then verify that the page has a current build and installation guide before you download files.

Support and build availability can change. LineageOS notes that a supported device may not have a build available at a particular moment because builds can be delayed, skipped, or temporarily removed. Check both the device page and the download portal when you are ready to install; a model’s appearance in the index does not guarantee a downloadable build at that time. See the project’s support FAQ.

Can you install LineageOS on a phone?
Only if the official device list has an entry for your phone’s exact model and variant, with a usable build and device-specific instructions. Start at the LineageOS device index, open the matching device page, and follow its guide rather than instructions for a related phone.

Official support is community-maintained, not an automatic consequence of a device running Android or sharing hardware with a supported model. The project’s port-submission guidance describes ongoing work on bugs, security updates, and performance, and explains that submissions are reviewed rather than guaranteed acceptance. That maintenance burden helps explain why a new or similar phone is not necessarily supported.
Can you build a DIY Android TV device with LineageOS?
Yes, when the hardware has a matching Android TV entry and its own installation guide. One official example is the Banana Pi M5 (S905X3, eMMC Only), listed as an Android TV device. The same board has a separately listed tablet build, so choose the Android TV entry and guide—not simply the first result for “M5.” Check the Banana Pi M5 device page for the current build and guide.

This is a board-specific DIY Android TV build, not a general method for installing LineageOS on a retail smart television. The device index also lists other TV-oriented hardware, including the Dynalink TV Box 4K (2021), Chromecast with Google TV (4K), and some NVIDIA Shield variants. Each entry has its own model requirements and installation constraints; being listed does not establish current stock, price, or ease of sourcing.

- eMMC module: The M5 guide’s flash package requires eMMC and will not work with only an SD card.
- Wi-Fi/Bluetooth peripheral: The guide says a compatible peripheral must be connected before flashing or booting. It lists the official Banana Pi Wi-Fi/BT Combo GPIO HAT and most USB Realtek rtl8822cs dongles. It warns that without the proper peripheral, the board may not boot properly or functionality may be missing. The M5 installation guide states: “This device requires a Wi-Fi/BT peripheral device to be connected prior to flashing/booting LineageOS to function properly.”
- Host computer and recovery controls: The documented process uses a host computer with adb and fastboot, the Linux-only aml-flash-tool wrapper for the official Amlogic update tool, and a USB keyboard for recovery navigation.
What the M5 installation involves
This is firmware flashing, not copying an app onto a board. At a high level, the M5 guide describes entering Amlogic burn mode by holding the board’s SW4 button while connecting power, flashing the initial image or firmware, then entering LineageOS Recovery, formatting data, and sideloading the correct LineageOS ZIP. Use the live device-specific instructions for the actual sequence; do not improvise commands or substitute files. The guide also cautions that Amlogic flashing utilities can be finicky on some host platforms.

| Google Apps | Optional separate installation, if desired and available for the release and architecture. | Optional separate Android TV package; the variant affects launcher and recommendations apps. |
| Maintenance and risk | Community-maintained support and device-specific flashing risks. | Community-maintained support, device-specific flashing risks, and additional board hardware requirements. |
Do you need Google Apps?
No. LineageOS says Google Apps cannot be preinstalled because of licensing restrictions, but they are not required to boot or run LineageOS. The packages are assembled by independent developers and are not supported by LineageOS. If you want them, choose a package matching the LineageOS release and device architecture, and follow the device guide to install it at the correct recovery stage. See the Google Apps guidance.
For Android TV builds, the Google Apps page describes full and minimal package variants. The full variant includes Google’s Android TV launcher and recommendations applications. Minimal leaves the included launcher in place; the page describes the default launcher on LineageOS Android TV builds as a non-GMS launcher from the Android 10 era. These package choices do not establish streaming-service availability, certification, or protected-video playback for a particular device.

Check streaming compatibility separately
LineageOS support alone does not confirm that a streaming app will be available or that it will play protected video at a particular resolution. Verify compatibility for the exact hardware, OS build, and service before choosing a device for streaming. Current app availability, DRM or certification status, maximum playback resolution, and the M5 peripheral’s present availability are not established by the cited device and installation guidance.
