Researchers found exceptionally well-preserved microfossils in Mongolia’s Kheseen Biota, but none they could confidently identify as an animal. That absence does not show animals were missing from Earth: animals are known from other places by the time these rocks formed. Instead, the find challenges the idea that a fossil site’s excellent preservation should always reveal animals if they lived then—and it affects how scientists use fossils to estimate when animals first evolved.
What did researchers find at Kheseen?
The team examined more than 140 samples from Mongolia’s Kheseen Biota, including material from localities that had not previously been documented, using scanning electron microscopy. They reported well-preserved acritarchs—small, often spherical microfossils with spines or branching projections—and embryo-like fossils containing internal cells. They found no fossils they could confidently identify as animals, according to the University of Oxford’s account, published October 5, 2026.

“No confidently identified animal fossils in the sampled assemblage” is a statement about what was found at Kheseen. It is not equivalent to “animals did not exist at that time.” The distinction matters because fossils record organisms preserved in particular places and conditions, not a complete census of ancient life.

Why can a well-preserved site still lack animals?
Fossilization depends on more than whether an organism lived nearby. The organism must be preserved under suitable conditions, and the resulting remains must survive geological change and be found. Different habitats and fossilization chemistry can favor some organisms while leaving others unrecorded.

Kheseen is more than 40 million years younger than the roughly 590-million-year-old Weng’an Biota in China. Weng’an’s exceptionally preserved microfossils and lack of definitive animal fossils had been used to support the argument that animals did not yet exist when it formed: if preservation was so good, the reasoning went, animals should have been found had they lived then. Kheseen presents a problem for that inference. It is also exceptionally well preserved, yet no animal fossils were confidently identified there even though animals are known from other localities by the Kheseen interval. As senior author Ross Anderson put it, Kheseen shows that exceptional microfossil preservation alone does not guarantee that animals will appear in an assemblage.
The lesson is not that fossil absence is meaningless. It is that absence from one deposit is weak evidence for global nonexistence unless researchers can establish that the relevant organisms would likely have been preserved and detected there.
How does the finding affect estimates of animal origins?
Molecular-clock analyses use genetic differences among living species, together with estimates of evolutionary rates and fossil-based dates, to infer when lineages diverged. Fossils can constrain these models, but the result depends on which geological dates are treated as limits on the lineages’ age.

The Oxford account says that replacing younger Ediacaran constraints with older geological constraints from deposits dated roughly 850–730 million years ago shifts the estimated origin of animals back by around 200 million years, to roughly 800–700 million years ago. This is a model-based estimate, not the age of an animal fossil discovered in Mongolia. The account does not give a named statistical estimate, confidence interval, or detailed model comparison, so the range should not be read as a precise date.

- They show: Kheseen preserves microfossils in remarkable detail, yet the surveyed samples yielded no fossils confidently identified as animals.
- They challenge: the assumption that a well-preserved deposit’s lack of animal fossils proves animals did not exist at the time.
- They do not show: that animals lived in Mongolia when Kheseen formed, or that animals definitely existed 800 million years ago.
- They leave unresolved: the precise date when the animal kingdom originated. Pre-Ediacaran animal body fossils remain elusive.
First author Orin Lole Durbin said the analysis does not prove animals existed 800 million years ago; rather, it weakens one argument for confining their origins to the Ediacaran interval. Anderson likewise said the animal kingdom’s precise “birth date” remains uncertain until stronger evidence becomes available.
