Using Kirigami Techniques to Make Functional Designs

Kirigami cuts create flexible hinges that can open or lift a flat sheet. Learn when it suits a functional design and why material, scale, and deployment matter.

Kirigami uses cuts as well as folds to turn a flat sheet into an open, movable, or three-dimensional form. It is worth considering when a design needs to expand or let air through; the right result depends on the cut pattern, how it is actuated, and the material and scale. A paper mock-up can reveal how a pattern moves, but it cannot prove that the same design will work in film, fabric, rubber, or rigid panels.

What makes kirigami functional?

In kirigami, cuts divide a sheet into connected sections. The remaining material acts as flexible hinges, so pulling, pushing, or folding the sheet can open gaps or lift parts of it into three dimensions. A pattern is therefore more than a surface decoration: its geometry determines where the sheet can bend and what forms it can reach.

A theoretical pattern does not necessarily deploy on its own. The intended shape may require pulling in particular directions, and the sheet may resist movement because of energy barriers. The design must account for both the target geometry and the motion needed to reach it. ASME’s overview of kirigami in engineering describes these principles and their potential applications.

When to choose kirigami instead of origami

Start with the desired behavior. Origami folding tends to compact a flat structure, while kirigami cuts can open the sheet and create ventilation. If the design benefits from an expanded form, gaps, or a shape that changes through deployment, kirigami may be a better direction. If compact folding is the main goal, compare the approaches rather than assuming cuts are an advantage.

ASME identifies deployable structures and mechanical metamaterials as promising areas for kirigami. Space solar panels and emergency shelters are examples of possible applications, not evidence that a particular commercial product is available or validated. The distinction matters: a promising concept still needs to be engineered for its actual environment and job.

Design choices that determine how a pattern behaves

Target geometry and opening

Define the shape or surface you need after deployment, and how much open area it should have. Cut placement influences how sections move and where the sheet opens, so a pattern that produces an attractive shape may not provide the required ventilation or coverage.

Deployment and actuation

Decide what will move the sheet: a person pulling it, a push from behind, a fold along a particular direction, or another mechanism. Check whether that motion can overcome resistance in the pattern and guide it toward the intended form. A design that works only when manipulated in an unintended direction is not a reliable functional design.

Material, thickness, and scale

Paper is useful for observing basic movement, but changing the material changes the problem. NIST describes nanoscale films in which cut geometry and intrinsic film stress shape the resulting three-dimensional configurations; stability depends in part on hinge geometry relative to material thickness. That is a different engineering context from a paper craft. Likewise, a pattern that bends in a thin sheet may not behave the same way in fabric, rubber, or a rigid panel. NIST’s account of controllable nanoscale kirigami structures illustrates how material properties and scale affect the result.

What the deployed design must do

Some designs only need to hold a shape; others must lock, support weight, or stay stable under load. Those requirements change the design brief. A recent thick-panel study examines plates designed to fold compactly, deploy into a flat plate, and carry load using locking hinges, with simulations and experiments used to assess performance. These are engineering concerns, not properties that can be inferred from a paper mock-up. The study on deployable and load-bearing kirigami plates provides an example.

Fabrication and reliability

Consider whether cuts and hinges can be made accurately and repeatedly, and how sensitive the result is to small imperfections. Folding-engineering literature identifies manufacturing, testing, thickness accommodation, and imperfection sensitivity as broader challenges. A design that deploys once under careful handling may still need substantial refinement before it can be manufactured or relied on. The 2024 review of origami engineering methods discusses these engineering challenges.

A practical way to explore a functional design

  1. Write down the required behavior. Describe the shape after deployment, how open it should be, how it will be moved, and whether it must carry load or lock in place.
  2. Make a simple paper mock-up. Use it to observe how cut placement changes movement and opening. Treat this as an exploratory model, not a validated pattern or proof of performance in another material.
  3. Test the deployment path. Move the mock-up in the direction the intended user or mechanism would act. Note where it resists, twists, or fails to reach the target shape.
  4. Reassess the design for the real material and scale. Consider thickness, hinge proportions, material behavior, and how the pattern will be fabricated. Expect to revise the geometry rather than transfer the paper pattern unchanged.
  5. Validate the finished application. For designs that must carry loads, remain stable, or protect people, use application-specific engineering analysis and testing. Research examples alone do not establish safety or suitability for a particular use.

Research on thick-panel systems underscores how much more is involved once a design must deploy as a rigid structure. A separate study reports paper, 3D-printed, and metal prototypes of thick-panel origami-kirigami structures, showing that material and scale are part of the design problem rather than an afterthought. The 2025 study of flat-foldable thick-panel structures describes those prototypes.

What a paper prototype can—and cannot—tell you

A paper model can help you see whether cuts create the opening or movement you want and whether the sheet reaches a useful shape. It cannot establish that a design will work unchanged in a different material, at a larger scale, or under load. The cited engineering work spans paper prototypes, nanoscale films, and thick-panel systems, each with different constraints.

The available engineering examples support kirigami as a promising design approach, especially for deployable and mechanically responsive structures. They do not provide a universally validated beginner pattern, prescribed paper weight, or general tool-safety procedure. For a craft-scale experiment, begin with a modest paper mock-up; for a structural or safety-critical application, treat the design as an engineering project requiring testing for its intended conditions.
