If you choose to use a VPN for a lawful purpose, connect it through a supported app on the device that runs Kodi—or through a compatible router—before launching Kodi. The exact steps depend on your device, operating system and VPN provider.
Do you need a VPN for Kodi?
No. Team Kodi says Kodi does not need a VPN for its intended operation and does not support or recommend VPNs. A VPN may be useful for a separate, legitimate purpose, such as connecting to a private network you are authorized to use or encrypting traffic between your device and a VPN provider. It does not authorize access to content, make an unlawful source lawful, guarantee anonymity, stop all tracking or malware, or ensure faster streaming.

Where to configure the VPN
Configure the VPN outside Kodi, at the device or network level. Kodi’s internet settings documentation assigns general connectivity to the underlying operating system and notes that connection problems can involve the operating system, firewall, modem/router or antivirus software.

These routes are not interchangeable in every setup. A VPN app or manual connection may cover only the Kodi device; a router configuration can affect other devices on the network as well. Confirm what the chosen configuration actually routes.
How to use a VPN with Kodi
1. Identify the Kodi device and operating system
Check whether Kodi runs on a Windows or Linux computer, Android device, Apple device, Raspberry Pi or another platform. Kodi supports multiple operating systems and hardware types, but that does not mean every VPN app supports every Kodi device. Confirm the exact model, OS version and provider support before proceeding.

2. Choose a supported connection method
Use the VPN provider’s app if it supports the device. Otherwise, check whether the provider documents a manual VPN connection for that operating system, such as a supported OpenVPN or IKEv2/IPsec configuration. A router is another possibility only if its firmware supports a VPN client and the provider has compatible instructions.

As one provider-specific example, NordVPN’s Kodi setup guide describes connecting through its app or a manual method before launching Kodi. It names Windows, Linux, Android, macOS and iOS, but this is not a guarantee of support for every device or OS version. Follow the current instructions for your provider and device; Kodi does not provide a universal VPN setup sequence.

4. Confirm the connection, then start Kodi
Check the VPN app or operating-system connection status to confirm it is connected, then launch Kodi. If Kodi cannot reach the internet, troubleshoot the device’s network connection, firewall, router or security software rather than looking for a Kodi VPN control.
Why Kodi’s proxy settings are not a VPN setup
Kodi’s internet settings include user-supplied HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS proxy options, including SOCKS5 with remote DNS resolving. A proxy is not the same as a system-level VPN: it does not configure the device’s VPN connection. Kodi also warns that proxy passwords are saved in unencrypted text files and can be easily discovered. Do not enter VPN account credentials into Kodi’s proxy-password field. Do Kodi VPN add-ons work?
Do not treat a Kodi add-on as the standard way to connect a VPN. NordVPN says VPN add-ons for Kodi do not currently work; its described approach is to connect through a supported device app or manual connection before opening Kodi. That statement is provider-specific and may change, so check current provider instructions rather than assuming an add-on is available.
Kodi add-ons and VPN software have different roles. Kodi’s add-ons page describes music and video add-ons that can stream internet content and notes that availability can vary by Kodi version. A VPN neither validates an add-on nor establishes that its content source is legal, safe or reliable.

Privacy, legality and content-source limits
Team Kodi’s policy says it does not support using VPNs to defeat geo-locking imposed by legitimate media providers, and Kodi forums do not permit promotion or recommendation of commercial VPN services. NordVPN likewise says its service should never be used to bypass copyright regulations. Use a VPN only for lawful purposes and where you are authorized to access the network or content.
A VPN provider may retain logs, and Team Kodi warns that no VPN is entirely private or secure. Review the provider’s privacy policy and terms for yourself. A VPN cannot guarantee anonymity, prevent all tracking, protect against malware in an add-on, or make unauthorized streaming lawful.
What to check if Kodi has no internet connection
- Confirm the device itself can reach the internet with the VPN disconnected and connected.
- Check the VPN app or operating-system status and the provider’s device-specific setup instructions.
- Review firewall, router/modem and antivirus settings, which Kodi identifies as possible parts of connectivity troubleshooting.
- If only Kodi fails, check Kodi’s network and proxy settings; do not put VPN credentials in its proxy password field.
For add-on compatibility, consult Kodi’s current documentation for the installed version. Kodi’s add-ons page lists Omega (version 21), while version information in older FAQ material may not reflect later releases; use Kodi’s live download page for current release details.
