For most Azure administrators, Azure Bastion is the managed jump-box option: it brokers RDP to a VM over its private address, so the target VM does not need a public IP. Connect through the Azure portal, or use a native RDP client when the selected Bastion configuration supports it. A self-managed jump-box VM remains an option for legacy or specialized tooling, but you own its security and maintenance.
How the Azure jump-box pattern works
A jump box is an intermediary between an administrator and private workloads. With Azure Bastion, the service runs in a dedicated AzureBastionSubnet in a virtual network (VNet) and brokers connections to VMs in that VNet or a peered VNet. The administrator connects through the Azure portal or, in supported configurations, a native operating-system client; the target VM can remain without a public IP. See Microsoft’s Azure Bastion architecture documentation.

For a conventional self-managed jump box, deploy a hardened intermediary VM in a hub or perimeter subnet. Restrict administrator access to trusted identity and network paths, then allow the jump box to reach target VMs using private addresses. This approach gives you control over its tools and configuration, but also makes you responsible for patching, hardening, monitoring, scaling, and credentials.
Choose the access method that fits the job
| Option | Best fit | Exposure and access scope | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Azure Bastion Basic or Standard | Browser-based or supported native RDP to private VMs | Target VM does not need a public IP; access is brokered to the VM | Managed-service cost; features depend on SKU |
| Azure Bastion Premium, private-only | Environments that require no public Bastion IP | Private connectivity through VPN or ExpressRoute is required for non-Azure clients | Premium SKU and additional network prerequisites; private-only mode must be selected at deployment and cannot be converted in place from a regular deployment |
| Point-to-Site (P2S) VPN | Administrators who need broad VNet access to RDP and other private resources | Client joins the VNet over VPN rather than receiving only a brokered RDP session | Requires VPN client and identity configuration |
| Just-in-Time (JIT) VM access | Temporary access when a VM still has a public IP | RDP is allowed only for an approved time window and source IP; JIT creates temporary NSG or Azure Firewall rules | Closing the window blocks new connections but does not interrupt existing ones |
| Self-managed jump-box VM | Legacy or specialized tools that cannot use Bastion | Public access, if needed, should terminate at the hardened jump box, not target VMs | You own its security operations and availability |
Pick a Bastion SKU by required capability
Microsoft’s admin-access guidance describes Basic as supporting browser RDP. Standard adds native-client connections, file transfer, shareable links, IP-based connections, custom inbound ports, and a configurable range of host instances. Premium adds private-only deployment and session recording. Feature availability and prerequisites depend on the deployment configuration; consult the Bastion overview and Microsoft’s developer and admin access guidance when selecting a SKU.

For capacity, Microsoft’s service table states that Basic provides two dedicated host instances with 40 concurrent RDP or 80 concurrent SSH sessions; Standard supports 2–50 host instances. These are the documented service figures, not a guarantee of application performance. Cost and actual capacity planning depend on SKU, region, host instances, concurrent demand, and network topology. The cited guidance does not establish a universal price, latency, or throughput figure.
Deploy Bastion and connect to a private VM
- Prepare the network: Choose a hub VNet and create the dedicated subnet named
AzureBastionSubnet. Required subnet sizing and NSG rules vary by architecture and SKU, so follow the current Bastion deployment requirements. - Connect the target network: Place the VM in the same VNet or peer its spoke VNet with the hub, as appropriate. Microsoft documents Bastion connectivity to local and peered VNets.
- Deploy the right SKU: Choose Basic for browser RDP, Standard for supported native-client and additional features, or Premium if private-only deployment or session recording is required. Private-only mode must be chosen when deploying; an existing regular Bastion deployment cannot be converted in place.
- Remove the target public IP where feasible: Bastion is designed to connect without a public IP on the VM. This reduces direct exposure of the VM’s management port.
- Check routing and NSGs: Ensure required traffic to
AzureBastionSubnetis not blocked. Microsoft specifically warns that required traffic, including port 443 from virtual-network sources, must be allowed for the applicable architecture. - Assign access and authenticate: Grant only the Azure RBAC permissions administrators need on the Bastion resource and target resources. Use Microsoft Entra authentication with MFA and, where appropriate, Privileged Identity Management for time-bound privileged access. Some Entra authentication flows require role assignments and VM extensions; MFA and Conditional Access evaluation depend on the chosen flow.
- Start an RDP session: In the Azure portal, open the target VM and select the Bastion connection option, then authenticate using the configured method. Use a native operating-system client only if the selected SKU and configuration support it. A private-only Bastion requires non-Azure clients to reach the private network through VPN or ExpressRoute.
Keep RDP off the public internet
Microsoft’s admin-access guidance states: “Never create an NSG rule that allows RDP (TCP 3389) or SSH (TCP 22) inbound from 0.0.0.0/0 (any source on the internet).” See the Microsoft guidance. Prefer Bastion or P2S VPN for routine access, remove VM public IPs when practical, require MFA for VPN and Entra sign-in, and apply least privilege to Bastion, the VM, its network interface, and the VNet.

If a VM must retain a public IP, use JIT to open RDP only for a short, approved window and restrict the permitted source IP. JIT temporarily adjusts an NSG or Azure Firewall rule; it is not a replacement for a private access design when one is practical. Existing sessions are not forcibly disconnected when the JIT window ends, so do not treat window closure as a way to terminate an active session.

Use your own intermediary VM when a required legacy workflow, agent, or tool cannot operate through Bastion or a VPN. Place it in a controlled subnet, limit who can reach it, and permit only the private network paths it needs to target VMs. Treat it as a high-value administrative asset: tightly control credentials, keep the operating system and tools patched, monitor access, and plan for availability. A self-managed jump box is not safer merely because the target VM’s RDP port is hidden; the intermediary itself must be secured and maintained.
