What happened with FN Meka and Capitol Records?
Futurism reported on August 23, 2022, that Capitol Records had added FN Meka to its lineup. The virtual artist project was associated with Factory New, a company co-founded by Anthony Martini. Contemporary coverage also reported that FN Meka had released “Florida Water,” a collaboration involving rapper Gunna. What did “AI rapper” mean in this case?
According to Futurism’s account of the creators’ claims, AI was used in making the music, from lyrics to chord progressions. The same reporting said a human studio musician performed the vocals. That distinction matters: the evidence in the contemporary coverage does not establish that an AI system generated or performed the vocal recording, nor does it independently verify how much of the composition or production was AI-generated. As quoted by Futurism, he said, “Now we can literally custom-create artists using elements proven to work.” He also argued that a 2% success rate would double what he described as the industry standard. Why did the project draw criticism?
In coverage published August 24, 2022, The FADER reported criticism of FN Meka’s earlier content and of “Florida Water.” Critics objected to the use of a racial slur and to imagery they viewed as trivializing incarceration and police brutality. Contemporary reporting said Capitol Music Group severed ties with the FN Meka project effective immediately. A report by chorus.fm reproduced the company’s statement using that wording and attributed it through its account to The New York Times. What this case does—and does not—show about AI music
FN Meka is a useful case for separating several questions that are often compressed into the label “AI artist”: how much human work goes into a project, what role AI plays in composition or production, whether that role is explained transparently, and how the persona and its cultural references are received by listeners and collaborators. The 2022 reporting offers creators’ claims about AI use and a report of human vocal performance, but it is not a technical audit or a basis for ranking current AI music tools.
The episode is therefore best understood as a reported label-signing and controversy from 2022—not as proof that an AI independently wrote and performed a song, or that Capitol Records continues to represent FN Meka.
