A foot pedal can control AI dictation or transcription, but it does not perform speech recognition itself—and it will not work with every app. The app must support a specific pedal, accept keyboard shortcuts the pedal can send, or provide another compatible connection method.
What a foot pedal can—and cannot—do
A pedal is an input controller. Depending on the software, pressing it can start or stop recording, move between fields, or control audio playback. The dictation or transcription app still handles speech recognition and text generation. Compatibility depends on the app, pedal, operating system, and connection method.

Also distinguish live dictation from transcription review. A pedal that controls playback while you type into a transcript is not necessarily able to start live AI dictation.

Check compatibility before choosing a pedal
Look in the app’s official help for a named pedal, native pedal pairing, or configurable keyboard shortcuts. Do not assume that a USB connector alone makes a pedal compatible. Confirm the operating system and whether the app needs to be in focus, a helper utility running, or a browser pairing active.

Choose a connection method that fits the app
Native or direct pairing
Axon Transcription Assistant documents pairing an Infinity USB Digital Foot Control directly through the browser, without installing software. In that playback workflow, the left pedal rewinds, the center pedal plays or pauses, and the right pedal fast-forwards. Pair the pedal for each new transcript; only one transcript tab can hold the pairing at a time. This example controls recorded audio during transcript review, not live AI dictation. See Axon’s guide.

Keyboard-shortcut emulation
If the app supports shortcuts, configure the pedal or its utility to send one the app recognizes, then assign that shortcut to the intended action in the app. For Dragon Copilot, Microsoft gives Ctrl+F10 to start or stop recording, Ctrl+F11 to move to the next field, and Ctrl+F12 to move to the previous field. These are Dragon Copilot examples, not universal dictation shortcuts. The pedal must send the shortcut and the app must have that shortcut assigned to the desired action. Microsoft’s instructions explain the assignments and recommend testing them before dictating.

The Philips SpeechOne manual describes connecting an ACC2300-series foot control to the SpeechOne docking station before connecting the station to the computer. Recording and playback require dictation software, and third-party software may need drivers. Check the manual and your software’s requirements before setup.

Set up and test the complete workflow
- Choose the action. Decide whether you want to start or stop live recording, toggle a microphone, navigate fields, or control playback of a recording.
- Check the app’s documentation. Confirm native support or identify a shortcut the app accepts. Match the pedal model and connection method to that documented workflow.
- Connect and configure the pedal. Follow the maker’s setup instructions. Install any required driver or utility, complete browser pairing if applicable, and assign only shortcuts supported by the target app.
- Test one action at a time. Verify that the pedal registers and that the intended app action occurs. Microsoft specifically advises checking the pedal assignments and Dragon Copilot settings before dictating.
- Test the actual work context. Confirm that the correct app window or browser tab can receive the input and that recording, navigation, or playback behaves as intended before relying on the pedal.
If the pedal does nothing
- Check that any required pedal utility is running and that the pedal is connected as instructed.
- Make sure the intended app window or browser tab has focus unless the app explicitly supports background shortcuts.
- Confirm that the shortcut is assigned both in the pedal configuration and to the intended action in the app; check that another app is not intercepting it.
- For direct browser pairing, verify that the supported pedal is paired with the current transcript and that the needed browser permissions are active.
- Check whether the software requires a driver or docking station, particularly with hardware-specific systems.
These checks follow the setup conditions described in Microsoft’s Dragon Copilot instructions, Axon’s pairing guide, and the DAC Pedal Pro user guide; they do not establish that any particular pedal works with an unlisted app.

What to compare when selecting a pedal
- Software support: Is the exact model named, does the app pair directly with it, or will it only work through shortcuts?
- Task: Is it designed for live recording control, field navigation, or playback during transcription review?
- Setup: Does it require a browser pairing, helper utility, driver, or docking station?
- Operating system and focus: Check current compatibility and whether the app must be active to receive input.
- Region and configuration: Availability may vary; for example, OM SYSTEM states that the RS28N is sold only outside the USA. Review the manufacturer’s current specifications for pedal count, configurable actions, and cable length rather than inferring comfort or suitability from appearance.
