Yes—a 4K Roku player can work with a non-4K TV as long as the television has an HDMI input. The TV will display only the resolutions it supports, so connecting a 4K Roku does not make a 720p or 1080p screen show 4K.
Can I use a 4K Roku on a non-4K TV?
Roku says its streaming players work with televisions that have HDMI. That covers connection and basic use; it does not mean every TV can display every resolution the player supports. A 4K Roku can send a picture to an HD television, but the television’s supported resolution sets the limit on what appears on screen. Roku’s compatibility guidance and its Streaming Stick 4K setup instructions make that distinction.

What you need for basic setup
- A television with an available HDMI input.
- The Roku player and its power connection.
- The TV remote, so you can select the HDMI input used by the Roku.
A Streaming Stick plugs directly into the television’s HDMI port, so it does not need a separate HDMI cable. For a Roku player that connects with a separate cable, Roku recommends a High Speed HDMI Cable for a 720p or 1080p television. Check what came with your particular player before buying an accessory; Roku recommends a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable for TVs that support 4K and/or HDR. Roku’s cable guidance describes these distinctions.
Set up the Roku and choose the TV’s input
- Connect the Roku to an available HDMI input. A Streaming Stick connects directly to HDMI; connect other players using the cable specified for that player.
- Connect the Roku to power using its supplied power cable. If the TV’s USB port does not provide enough power, use the included wall adapter.
- Use the TV remote to select the HDMI input where the Roku is connected.
- Follow the Roku’s on-screen setup prompts. The player can detect the TV’s best display type, or you can select a display setting manually.
These steps follow Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K setup instructions and display-type guidance.

Why the Roku cannot make an HD TV show 4K
Resolution is a capability of the display as well as the player. A 4K Roku may support 4K output, but a 720p or 1080p television cannot display the additional detail of a 4K picture. The Roku does not upgrade the TV’s panel. Roku says a compatible 4K TV is needed to take advantage of 4K resolution. Roku’s FAQ explains the TV requirement.
Do not assume that a 4K-capable player will visibly improve picture quality on every HD television. The support guidance establishes that the player can work with an HDMI TV and that the TV limits the displayed resolution; it does not promise a picture-quality improvement over another Roku model.

What is required to watch in 4K?
When you later connect the Roku to a 4K television, Roku lists several requirements for 4K playback:
- A Roku player capable of 4K.
- A compatible 4K TV with an available HDMI 2.0 input that supports HDCP 2.2.
- A streaming service plan that supports 4K.
- Enough internet bandwidth. Roku says up to 25 Mbps may be needed for 4K streaming; this is Roku’s estimate, and the support page does not state a publication year.
Devices between the Roku and TV matter too. Roku says every HDMI-connected device in the signal chain must meet the relevant HDCP 2.2 requirement for 4K/HDR. An AVR or other intermediary that lacks the required support can prevent 4K playback. See Roku’s 4K setup requirements and HDMI compatibility guidance.

Troubleshoot a blank screen or missing picture
- Check the connection and input: make sure the Roku is seated in the HDMI port, then select that same input on the television.
- Check power: use the supplied power cable. If a TV USB port is not providing enough power, connect the included wall adapter.
- Allow a display change to revert: if you manually changed the display type and the picture disappeared, Roku says the player reverts to its previous setting after 20 seconds. Its general guidance recommends automatic detection of the TV’s best resolution and frame rate, with manual selection available if needed. See Roku’s display-type guidance.
- Bypass an intermediary when diagnosing a 4K/HDR issue: connect the Roku directly to the TV to check whether an AVR or other HDMI device in the chain is the cause. Roku’s 4K setup guidance sets out the HDCP 2.2 requirement for devices in the signal path.
