Which n8n integrations should you use to automate your work? Start with the task, not a popularity list: an integration connects an n8n workflow to an external app or API so it can pass data and perform supported operations. The examples below cover common jobs—from handling email to updating project work—but they are a task-based shortlist, not a measured ranking of the most-used or most-efficient tools.
What an n8n integration does
n8n is a fair-code licensed workflow automation tool that combines AI and business process automation, with cloud and self-host deployment options. Its integrations are the app-facing parts of a workflow: connect services with APIs, move information between them, and manipulate that data with little or no code. See the n8n documentation for the platform overview.

The official documentation lists a broad set of app nodes, but availability alone does not show that a tool is the best choice for a particular team. The right fit depends on the work you need to automate, the actions the node exposes, and the apps and permissions already in your stack. Integration inventories and node capabilities can change.

Useful integrations by the job you need done
Gmail: route messages and add an approval step
The Gmail node documents operations for retrieving messages, including filtered retrieval, managing labels and read status, replying, and sending. That can support workflows that sort incoming email, label messages for follow-up, or send notifications when another event occurs. The documentation also describes an email approval step, useful when a workflow should pause for a person before proceeding. See n8n’s Gmail Message Operations documentation.
#1 Best Overall
Take care with destructive actions: n8n says its immediate message-delete operation cannot be undone—“This operation can’t be undone.” The documentation points to trashing a thread when recoverable deletion is needed.
OpenAI: include AI and work with files
The OpenAI integration can be part of an AI-enabled workflow. Its documented file operations include uploading, listing, and deleting files, and the documentation says file operations can be used across various operations. For the documented file operation in the Assistants context, n8n lists a maximum individual file size of 512 MB or 2 million tokens. This is a product limit for that context, not a general model context-window size. Check the OpenAI node documentation for current details.
Rank #2
Slack and Google Sheets: send updates and keep tabular records
n8n lists Slack and Google Sheets among its integrations. They are natural candidates when a workflow needs to connect team communication with structured, spreadsheet-based information—for example, making workflow data available to a team or using a spreadsheet as part of a record-keeping process. Confirm that the current node operations match the exact actions your workflow requires in the Slack node documentation and Google Sheets node documentation.
Shopify, HubSpot, and Stripe: connect commerce, customer records, and payments
n8n’s documentation lists Shopify, HubSpot, and Stripe integrations. They represent different parts of a business workflow: commerce, customer management, and payments. Consider them when a process spans those systems, but verify the specific supported actions in the relevant Shopify, HubSpot, and Stripe node documentation. Their inclusion here establishes availability, not a ranking, performance comparison, or endorsement.
Rank #3
Trello: turn workflow events into project work
The Trello node documentation covers operations involving boards, cards, comments, checklists, labels, lists, and members. This makes it a candidate for turning an event elsewhere in a workflow into project work, such as creating or updating a card. The built-in node may not expose every capability of Trello’s API; for an unsupported operation, n8n points to its HTTP Request node as a way to call the service API. Review the Trello node documentation before designing around a particular action.

- Define the job. Is the workflow about communication, structured records, commerce, customer management, payments, AI, or project tracking? Begin with the job and the apps your team already uses.
- Check the node’s operations. Confirm that it supports the required trigger and actions. A service’s API may offer capabilities that its built-in n8n node does not; n8n documents HTTP Request as a route for Trello API operations the node does not cover.
- Map the data handoff. Identify the fields moving between apps and whether they need transforming. n8n is designed to manipulate data between connected apps, but the workflow still has to account for differences in data shape.
- Verify access and credentials. Check current n8n and service documentation for credential setup, scopes, and service-side permissions before implementation. Requirements vary by service and operation.
- Set safeguards for consequential actions. Decide which steps need human review, especially before sending messages or making irreversible changes. Gmail’s documented send-and-wait approval step is one option for a review gate.
- Choose a deployment approach. n8n offers cloud and self-hosted options. Select based on your team’s operational needs; the documentation cited here does not establish a cost or performance advantage for either.
What “top” can—and cannot—mean here
n8n’s reviewed official documentation establishes that these integrations exist and describes some of their operations. It does not provide a usage ranking or a comparative test showing which integrations are most popular or improve efficiency the most. Treat this list as a practical starting point for matching tools to tasks, then verify current actions and access requirements for your own workflow.
