Google Maps does not document a setting that locks a driving route against recalculation. It uses live traffic to find routes and may offer a better one. You can choose an available alternate before you start, and route preferences or extra stops may shape the itinerary—but Google’s published guidance does not say those choices prevent rerouting. Treat adding waypoints as an experiment, not a confirmed fix.
Why Google Maps changes your route
Google says Maps uses real-time traffic to find routes, and its navigation guidance describes the app surfacing a better route while you drive. That can be useful when conditions change, but it can also pull you away from a road you deliberately chose. Seeing an alternate is not the same as having a route-lock control.

Google’s navigation help says that before navigation starts, you can tap a gray alternate route on the map to select it. This chooses an available option for the trip; it does not establish that Maps will keep that exact route if conditions change.

What the available workarounds actually do

Try adding waypoints—but don’t rely on them as a lock
Adding intermediate destinations along a preferred road is a plausible way to make an itinerary follow your intended path. The available official guidance does not confirm that it stops Maps from recalculating, however, and it does not establish that custom maps provide turn-by-turn route locking. If you want to try this approach, build the stops before leaving and check the resulting route; regard it as route shaping, not a guaranteed workaround.

Do not adjust the itinerary while driving. If the route changes, pull over safely before reviewing alternatives or editing destinations.
Use preferences for constraints, not guarantees
Google’s road-trip guidance describes options such as avoiding tolls and ferries, while its 2022 tips discuss fuel-efficient route preferences and toll avoidance. These controls express what you prefer; they are not documented as a way to pin a particular road. Google’s posts are dated May 19, 2016, and April 5, 2022, so check the current app interface rather than assuming those older menu descriptions still match your version.

Google’s Routes API documentation explains that avoid-route modifiers bias results and may not remove toll roads, highways, ferries, or indoor travel if no practical alternative exists or avoiding the feature would substantially increase travel time. That is developer documentation, not proof that consumer Google Maps behaves identically, but it illustrates why an avoid preference should not be treated as an absolute constraint.

Downloading the area ahead of time can help you get directions where mobile connectivity is limited. Google’s road-trip tips describe offline directions, but do not say that offline use keeps a route fixed. Downloading a map therefore addresses access to map data, not the question of whether Maps will recalculate your itinerary.

A practical plan before a road trip
- Review the route before starting. Compare the displayed options and tap the gray alternate you want, if one is available.
- Set preferences that match your trip. Choose relevant options such as avoiding tolls, and confirm the labels in your current app.
- Add meaningful intermediate destinations if needed. Check whether the resulting route follows the roads you intend to use; do not assume the stops disable rerouting.
- Download the map area if coverage may be weak. Do this before departure, and treat it as an offline-access precaution.
- Reassess safely if Maps proposes a change. Stop in a safe place before deciding whether to accept the alternate or continue toward your planned destination.
