Neither is automatically the better buy. A refurbished iPhone 17 Pro is the safer choice when the seller clearly documents its inspection, return window, and written warranty. A privately used iPhone 17 Pro can be better value if you can verify the phone’s condition and its lower price makes up for any weaker protection. Compare the specific offers—not the labels.
Used and refurbished describe different things
“Used” means the phone has had a previous owner. “Refurbished” usually means a seller says it inspected, repaired, or restored the phone, but the word alone does not promise a particular battery condition, cosmetic grade, parts standard, warranty, or return policy. Those terms depend on the seller.

Apple’s Certified Refurbished terms are a useful benchmark, but they apply to products sold through Apple’s program—not to every listing described as refurbished. Apple says its refurbished iOS devices receive a new battery and outer shell, and its program includes a one-year limited warranty. Apple Certified Refurbished: program details.

Apple introduced iPhone 17 Pro in 2025. Its model specifications include a 6.3-inch OLED display with adaptive refresh rates up to 120 Hz. Apple rates it IP68 under IEC 60529, tested to a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes in controlled laboratory conditions. Apple cautions that water resistance can diminish with wear, and liquid damage is not covered by warranty. These specifications describe the model; they do not establish the condition or water resistance of any individual preowned phone. Apple iPhone 17 Pro technical specifications.

What Apple Certified Refurbished includes
Apple says every Apple Certified Refurbished product receives full functional testing. For refurbished iOS devices, Apple states that the battery and outer shell are new, genuine Apple replacement parts are used as needed, accessories and cables are included, and free shipping and returns are available. The program includes a standard one-year limited warranty, and AppleCare coverage may also be purchased. Apple advertises savings of up to 15%; that is a maximum program claim, not a typical discount or a promise that an iPhone 17 Pro will be available at that saving. That does not establish availability in other regions or later dates; check the local Apple refurbished storefront before deciding. Apple Certified Refurbished: program details.

How to check a privately used iPhone 17 Pro
Apple advises buyers to use a reliable seller, understand the return policy, ask what the seller’s certification process actually inspects, and check physical condition, battery health, and parts and service history. Inspect promptly after delivery and use the return period if the phone differs from the listing. Apple Support: If you want to buy a preowned iPhone.

1. Confirm Activation Lock is off
Do not buy a phone with Activation Lock enabled. Apple’s guidance is explicit: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” For an in-person purchase, ask the seller to remove the lock. If an online purchase arrives displaying “iPhone Locked to Owner,” Apple says to return it. Apple Support: If you want to buy a preowned iPhone.
2. Check battery condition and repair history
After setup, open Settings > General > About and review Parts and Service History where available. “Genuine Apple Part” indicates a genuine replacement made using Apple parts and processes. “Unknown” can mean a part is nongenuine or previously used, was installed incompletely, or is not working as expected. Battery health may be unavailable for an unknown or nongenuine battery.

Then open Settings > Battery > Battery Health to check maximum capacity and any battery messages. Treat the displayed figure cautiously if iOS cannot verify the battery. Apple says lithium-ion batteries lose capacity over time and recommends trained technicians for replacement. Apple, Apple Authorized Service Providers, Independent Repair Providers, and Self Service Repair may be options depending on location; service availability, pricing, and coverage vary by market. Compare the actual offers
Match the phones on storage capacity, carrier status, condition, and coverage before judging value. Then compare these five factors:
- Total price: Include likely battery service and any missing accessories, not just the listed price.
- Battery: Check what is verified, what threshold the seller promises, and whether replacement may be needed.
- Parts and inspection: Find out which components were checked or replaced and whether the phone can be tested before the return window closes.
- Protection: Read the written warranty and return terms, including their duration and what they cover.
- Seller and activation: Check seller reliability, confirm the phone is not Activation Locked, and make sure it can be set up and used with your carrier.
There is no established universal price winner for used versus refurbished iPhone 17 Pro units. Prices and protection are offer-specific, so a meaningful comparison requires matching country, storage, carrier lock, condition, battery terms, and coverage.
Which should you choose?
Choose refurbished when protection matters more
Prefer a refurbished offer when the seller spells out its inspection and battery standards, provides useful return rights and written warranty coverage, and the price premium is acceptable. Apple Certified Refurbished has especially clear published terms if the iPhone 17 Pro is available in your market.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

A privately used phone can make sense when it is materially cheaper after likely battery or accessory costs, its parts and battery information can be checked, it is compatible with your carrier, Activation Lock is off, and you have a credible return or inspection opportunity. If the seller cannot remove Activation Lock, will not let you test the phone, battery health cannot be verified, or the return terms are poor, walk away or require a substantially lower price.
