Understand the two recovery layers
There are two distinct ways to recover from trouble, and they address different failures:

Use service supervision for process exits; consider FIFO recovery for eligible output failures. Neither layer guarantees uninterrupted playback or that YouTube will preserve the same live event. Check the installed systemd and FFmpeg versions and their local documentation before relying on specific options. systemd service documentation was not available in the retrieved material, so verify accepted directives against your host’s manuals.
Configure FFmpeg as a systemd service
The following is a starting-point example, not a tested Contabo configuration. Replace the executable path, input, and output arguments with your actual command. Do not put a real stream key in a public file, screenshot, or support post. Restrict access to the service file and avoid exposing the key in logs or process listings.

Create a service unit
Create
/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.serviceusing an editor with administrator privileges. Put the FFmpeg command inExecStartas one command line, using the input and YouTube output details appropriate to your setup. Restart=on-failureso an abnormal failure is retried while an intentional clean stop is not automatically restarted. ChooseRestart=alwaysonly if you also want clean exits to trigger another start. A 10-second delay is an example to avoid an immediate tight retry loop, not a universal recommendation. Load and enable the unit
After saving the file, run:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.servicedaemon-reloadasks systemd to load unit-file changes.enable --nowenables startup at boot and starts the service immediately. -

sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pagerConfirm that systemd loaded the unit you edited, that FFmpeg is running, and that the journal does not show a repeating error. For live log output, use
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -f. -
Verify an automatic restart safely
Do not test by exposing a stream key or disrupting an important broadcast. If you can use a safe test stream, observe the service status and journal when FFmpeg exits. Confirm that the process starts again after the configured delay, then verify the actual broadcast in YouTube Studio. Restarting the local process alone is not proof that the live event has returned to the expected state.

Use FFmpeg FIFO recovery for eligible output failures
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt recovery from some output failures without the process exiting. Relevant options include attempt_recovery to enable attempts and recovery_wait_time to set the wait between attempts. max_recovery_attempts can cap retries; its documented default is zero, meaning unlimited attempts. recover_any_error broadens the errors considered recoverable, but FFmpeg says some errors usually treated as permanent are not attempted by default.
FIFO queue behavior is another trade-off: the documented default queue size is 60 packets and the default recovery wait is 5 seconds. These are option defaults, not performance recommendations, and may vary by FFmpeg version. If the queue overflows, dropping packets can keep processing in real time but omit stream content; blocking avoids dropping packets but can hold up the encoder. Check your exact build before adding FIFO options:

ffmpeg -h muxer=fifoUse the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation alongside the local help output. FIFO recovery and systemd restarts can complement each other, but avoid stacking retry settings blindly: identify which layer is failing and choose retry behavior that will not conceal a persistent input, credential, or network problem.

Work from the local process outward. A healthy systemd unit does not establish that FFmpeg has valid media, network access, or a working YouTube broadcast.

Determine whether FFmpeg exited
Check
systemctl statusand the service journal. If the service is failed or repeatedly restarting, inspect the last FFmpeg error. If it remains active, systemd has no exited process to restart; investigate FIFO output recovery or another failure layer. -
Check the input and command
Confirm that the media path exists, the service user can read it, and the input is still available. A restart cannot fix an invalid input or a command that consistently fails at startup.

Check output details and credentials
Review the output endpoint and stream key through a secure channel without printing or sharing the secret. Correct a revoked, mistyped, or mismatched key at its source; retries cannot repair invalid credentials.

Check outbound connectivity and firewall layers
Contabo’s managed Firewall is a network-level control separate from the operating system firewall. When assigned, Contabo says it blocks inbound traffic by default until allow rules are configured, while outbound traffic remains unrestricted. When the managed firewall is not enabled, Contabo says default port access is unrestricted. For FFmpeg publishing to YouTube, do not assume the managed inbound rules are blocking outbound traffic; check the actual error, host firewall rules, route, and connectivity. Confirm YouTube’s broadcast state
Open YouTube Studio and check whether the intended stream is receiving the encoder and in the expected state. The available information does not establish what YouTube will do to every scheduled or active event after an encoder reconnects; verify the specific broadcast rather than assuming the same event or playback position was preserved.
Restart the service, not the whole VPS, when only FFmpeg failed
For a deliberate service restart, use:
sudo systemctl restart ffmpeg-youtube.serviceA VPS reboot affects more than the stream service, so it should not be the first response to a single FFmpeg failure. Contabo’s reboot help says to prefer rebooting from within the operating system if it remains accessible; its panel reboot shuts down and restarts the server.
