Requirements Before You Can Swap Devices
FaceTime Handoff works only when your devices are considered eligible by the system. The biggest requirement is that your devices are signed in to the same Apple ID and can communicate securely.
- Same Apple ID on iPhone, iPad, and Mac (signed in to the same account in FaceTime and iCloud).
- FaceTime enabled on every device you want to use.
- Handoff enabled (Continuity) and nearby-device discovery functioning via Bluetooth.
- Wi‑Fi or cellular available and generally similar network conditions (Wi‑Fi is the most reliable).
- Devices are close enough for continuity to detect them (typically within a room).
- Not during certain call states (for example, some special call scenarios may prevent a clean handoff prompt).

- Start the FaceTime call on the current device (for example, on Mac).
- On the target iPhone or iPad, unlock the device if needed.

For best results, use modern OS releases. If you’re running older software, you may get partial behavior (you can receive an incoming FaceTime on the other device but you won’t get the active-call handoff prompt).

Handoff banner never appears
Start with the fastest checks—those account for most failures.
- Confirm Handoff is On on iPhone/iPad (Settings > General > AirPlay & Handoff) and on Mac (System Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff).
- Confirm Bluetooth is On on every device.
