Use Bitwarden Free for Passwords—Without Assuming Browser Saving Is Unsafe

Bitwarden’s free individual plan offers a dedicated place to generate and store passwords, but browser saving is not automatically unsafe. Here’s how to choose and secure the option that fits your devices.

If you want a dedicated password manager instead of saving logins in your browser, Bitwarden’s free individual plan is a practical place to start. It lists unlimited passwords and devices, with browser, mobile, and desktop apps. Browser password saving is not automatically unsafe, though: the better choice depends on your devices, security habits, and need for sync and recovery.

Why use a password manager?

Using a different strong password for every account limits the damage if one password is exposed. Remembering a unique password for every service is difficult, so a manager can generate and store them for you. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends password managers for this purpose and cautions against keeping passwords in an easily accessed plaintext note or file. CISA’s password-manager guidance also explains factors to consider when choosing one.

Is browser password saving unsafe?

Not categorically. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) notes that browsers and devices can save passwords and autofill them, just as password managers can. Its consumer guidance treats these as available ways to manage logins, not as a blanket safe-versus-unsafe distinction.

A dedicated manager may suit you better if you want one place to manage credentials across different browsers or devices, or want to use its password generator. A browser’s built-in storage may be simpler if you mainly use one browser and its available features meet your needs. In either case, protect the account or device that gives access to saved passwords.

What Bitwarden’s free plan includes

Bitwarden’s official pricing page currently labels its basic personal account “Free” and lists unlimited passwords and devices, plus browser, mobile, and desktop apps. Paid options are also offered, so do not assume every Bitwarden feature is included at no cost. Check the current plan details before signing up; features can change.

Bitwarden lists browser extensions for Edge, Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, DuckDuckGo, Vivaldi, Brave, and Tor, as well as web, desktop, mobile, and command-line options on its download page. Confirm that it supports the browsers and devices you actually use.

  3. Enable multifactor authentication (MFA) for the manager account. When available, the FTC recommends considering an authenticator app or security key over passcodes sent by text or email.

  4. Install the manager’s app or browser extension on the devices you use, then use its generator to create unique passwords for accounts as you update or add them.

  5. Review sync and recovery options. Cloud sync can make passwords available across devices; a locally maintained database may require regular backups and more upkeep. Understand what happens if you lose your master password before relying on the manager.
