Use AI to plan and draft a blog post, not to replace the writer’s judgment. Start with a clear reader-focused brief and verified source material, ask for one task at a time, then check every factual claim and add insight or examples that make the article genuinely useful. Publish only after it answers a real reader need.

Can you use AI to write blog posts?

Yes. Google does not categorically prohibit AI-assisted writing. Its guidance says generative AI can help with research and with adding structure to original content, while warning that AI output can be inaccurate and needs manual review before publication. Google’s guidance on generative AI content also cautions against producing many pages without added value for readers.

The important distinction is the purpose and quality of the work. Google says its focus is content quality rather than how a page was produced; using automation primarily to manipulate search rankings violates its spam policies. Google’s 2023 explanation makes that distinction explicit.

How to use AI to write a blog post

  1. Write the brief yourself

Define the intended reader, the question the post must answer, what the reader should be able to do afterward, and the publication’s point of view. Note which statements will need sources. A strong brief keeps the tool focused on the reader’s goal instead of generating generic copy.

  2. Gather sources and notes before drafting

Collect authoritative references, relevant first-hand material, and your own expertise. You can ask AI to organize these materials or identify unanswered questions, but do not treat its output as evidence. Verify claims against the underlying sources.

  3. Ask for an outline, then review it

Have the tool propose a structure that follows the reader’s question. Ask it to identify where examples, evidence, or caveats belong. Before asking for prose, check the outline for missing steps, unnecessary repetition, and claims that have no supporting evidence.

  4. Draft one section at a time

Provide the notes and source excerpts relevant to each section. Tell the tool to separate supplied facts from suggestions and to flag uncertainty. That instruction is a useful safeguard, not a guarantee: check factual statements against the originals.

  5. Add value the tool cannot supply by itself

Bring in your expertise, reporting, examples, comparisons, or a useful point of view. Google’s guide to generative AI features in Google Search, announced May 15, 2026, emphasizes unique, useful content. If the article could be produced unchanged for any site, it probably needs more specific insight or practical detail.

  6. Fact-check and edit for voice

Check every name, date, quotation, statistic, recommendation, and technical statement against an appropriate source. Remove invented citations and unsupported detail. Rewrite passages that sound generic or do not match the publication’s voice. Review metadata and structured data as well as the body text.

  7. Read the finished page as your audience

Make sure the title accurately describes the post, the order is easy to follow, and readers can achieve the stated goal without needing to search again. Consider adding context about AI’s role if readers could reasonably wonder how the article was created.

Turn a brief into an outline

I am writing for [specific audience]. The reader wants to [reader outcome]. Using only the notes and sources below, propose a clear outline for a blog post. For every section, state the reader question it answers and identify any fact or example that still needs verification. Do not invent statistics, citations, quotations, or claims. Notes and sources: [paste material].

Find gaps in a draft

Review this draft against the reader’s question: [question]. List unclear steps, unsupported factual claims, missing caveats, and places that repeat common advice without adding useful detail. Do not rewrite yet. For each factual claim, quote only enough to identify it and say what kind of primary source would verify it. Draft: [paste].

Draft from verified notes

Draft the [section name] section for [audience] to help them [outcome]. Use only the supplied facts and quotations. Keep the tone [voice description]. Mark missing evidence as [NEEDS SOURCE] rather than filling it in. Include [example or limitation]. Notes: [paste verified material].

Revise for clarity without changing meaning

Edit this passage for clarity, flow, and [voice]. Preserve its meaning and all sourced qualifications. Do not add facts, citations, quotations, or claims. After the edit, list any statement whose meaning may have changed. Passage: [paste].

Does Google penalize AI-written content?

Google’s published guidance does not impose a blanket penalty simply because AI helped create a page. It warns that automation used primarily to manipulate rankings violates spam policies, and that scaled pages without added value may violate its scaled content abuse policy. The practical standard is whether the finished article is reliable and useful to people—not whether a tool contributed to it.

Google’s May 2026 guide says foundational SEO practices remain relevant to its generative AI search features. It does not require special AI-only tactics such as llms.txt, obligatory content chunking, or rewriting specifically for AI. Meeting requirements and best practices still does not guarantee that a page will be indexed or displayed.

Do you need to disclose AI use?

Google’s people-first guidance does not state a universal requirement to disclose AI assistance in every post. It suggests providing context about who created content, how it was made, and why automation was useful when readers might reasonably ask. Use that judgment for the audience and subject: explain AI’s role when the process is relevant to a reader’s assessment of the work.

Google’s people-first content guidance also asks whether a page serves an existing audience, demonstrates depth of knowledge, and leaves readers able to achieve their goal. Those are useful editorial checks whether AI was involved or not.
