If you can’t disable write caching for a USB drive in Windows 10 or 11, change its removal policy to Quick removal. That policy prevents Windows from caching disk writes. Open the drive’s properties, select Policies, and choose Quick removal. If the tab is missing, use the Hardware list to open the drive’s properties instead.
Change the USB drive to Quick removal

Open File Explorer, select This PC, and right-click the USB drive. Choose Properties.

Select Quick removal, then select OK to apply the change.

Microsoft describes Quick removal as a policy that “manages storage operations in a manner that keeps the device ready to remove at any time.” It prevents Windows from caching disk write operations for that external device. Microsoft says Quick removal has been the default since Windows 10 version 1809. Microsoft’s removal-policy instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11.
If the Policies tab is missing
Open the device’s properties through its hardware entry:

In the drive’s Properties window, select Hardware.

Under All disk drives, select the removable USB drive, then select Properties.

In the device’s Properties window, select Policies, choose Quick removal, and select OK.
Quick removal and Better performance compared

The setting applies to each external device and remains in effect when that device is disconnected and reconnected to the same computer port. The current default and available options are described in Microsoft Learn’s removal-policy documentation.

Safely eject the drive when Better performance is selected
If you leave the drive set to Better performance, eject it in Windows before unplugging it:

Select the taskbar’s Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon. If it is not visible, check the taskbar’s hidden icons.

Select Eject for the USB drive.

Wait for Windows to indicate that it is safe to remove the hardware, then disconnect the drive.
See Microsoft’s instructions for safely removing hardware if you need help locating the taskbar control.
If the setting is unavailable or does not stick
The documented Windows procedure explains how to choose a policy and how to reach it when the Policies tab is not on the first Properties window. It does not establish why a particular drive’s control might be unavailable, disabled, or fail to retain the selection. Check that you opened the properties for the removable drive itself using the Hardware fallback above. If the option still cannot be changed, the available documentation does not identify a specific cause; the drive model, enclosure, Windows build, and exact control state would be needed to narrow it down.

Microsoft also has an older USB and SD storage article describing the Windows 7-era Device Manager route for enabling write caching. Treat that as historical guidance, not the current Windows 10 and 11 procedure.
