A TV’s USB port may power a streaming stick, but it may not provide enough power for every model. If your device shows a low-power warning or behaves unreliably, try a wall outlet with an adapter that matches the exact device’s required output and cable. Check the original box first: some streaming sticks include their power supply, and the right rating and connector vary by model.
Do you need a wall adapter for a streaming stick?
Not necessarily. A TV USB port can power some streaming sticks, but it is not guaranteed to supply enough power for every device. If setup displays a low-power notification, follow the manufacturer’s instructions; connecting the stick to a wall outlet with a correctly rated adapter can resolve the issue.

Google says its “Low power” or “g.co/cast/power” screen means a Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer is not receiving enough power. Google Support notes, “If it’s plugged into your TV’s USB port or a different adapter, it might not be getting enough power.” Roku similarly warns that “The USB port on some TVs may be unable to power a Roku device.” Amazon gives separate advice for Fire TV models that detect insufficient power from a TV’s USB port.

If the stick works reliably from the TV and shows no power warning, the manufacturer guidance cited here does not make a wall adapter an automatic upgrade. First check the stick’s setup instructions and included accessories.

Choose the adapter by the exact device model
There is no single output rating that applies to every streaming stick. Match the voltage and current specified for your model, and confirm that the connector and cable are compatible.
| Device or situation | Power guidance | Connector and cable notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer | Google specifies 5 V DC, 1.5 A. Its troubleshooting page recommends a 5 V/1.5 A replacement adapter when the device reports low power. | Use the included cable or a compatible accessory. Google cautions that another cable may be unsupported and advises against putting a USB-C hub or switch in the power path. |
| Roku Streaming Stick models covered by Roku’s setup guidance | When a TV port cannot power the device and an on-screen warning appears, Roku recommends a 5 V, 1 A USB adapter connected to a wall outlet. | Roku advises using the included USB cable. Check the setup instructions for the specific stick. |
| Amazon Fire TV devices with a low-power notification | Amazon advises a 5 W adapter (5 V, 1 A or equivalent) for the low-power situation described in its troubleshooting instructions. | Connector and cable details differ by model. The Fire TV Stick HD (2nd Generation), for example, uses a USB-C power cable; verify your device’s setup guidance. |
These are manufacturer specifications and troubleshooting recommendations for the named devices and situations, not a universal compatibility list. Google’s specifications page also shows that older Chromecast generations have different connection details and power requirements. Do not assume that a rating or connector for one generation fits another.

What to check before buying
- Exact model: Identify the device generation, then check its official setup or specification page. Similar product names can have different ports and power guidance.
- Output rating: Match the model’s stated voltage and current. The 5 V/1.5 A Google recommendation is not interchangeable guidance for every Roku or Fire TV; use the relevant manufacturer’s instructions.
- Connector and cable: Check whether your device uses USB-C, micro-USB, or another connection. Prefer the included cable or a replacement the manufacturer identifies as compatible.
- Reach to the outlet: Choose a compatible cable long enough to connect to the wall adapter without stretching it. Do not add a hub or switch to the Google power path where Google advises against it.
- Included accessories: Check the box and the setup you already have before ordering. Google says the supply is included with Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer; Amazon’s setup guidance also describes use of its included adapter.
- Safety and condition: Google advises using the included adapter and cable or compatible accessories. Do not use a damaged adapter or cable; follow the device maker’s safety guidance rather than assuming an unverified accessory is suitable.
Troubleshoot a low-power warning
- Read the on-screen message. Note whether it identifies a low-power condition, such as Google’s “Low power” or “g.co/cast/power” screen, or Amazon’s “Fire TV Low Power Notification.”
- Check the cable and connections. Make sure the device’s supplied or model-compatible power cable is seated correctly, and inspect it and the adapter for damage.
- Try the manufacturer’s wall-power setup. Connect the device using an adapter with the rating its instructions specify. For the cited Google, Roku, and Amazon situations, those recommendations are respectively 5 V/1.5 A, 5 V/1 A, and 5 W (5 V/1 A or equivalent).
- Recheck model-specific instructions if the warning remains. Confirm the device generation, connector, cable, and adapter output rather than substituting a random cable or assuming a higher current rating will work.
Manufacturer instructions to consult
