1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor most ordinary rechargeable AA or AAA setups, low-self-discharge NiMH cells remain the safer default when your device supports them and you can use a proper NiMH charger. USB-C rechargeable lithium cells are attractive when charging each cell directly from a USB-C cable matters and your device explicitly accepts the product’s regulated output. Neither type is universally compatible, and USB-C describes a charging interface—not a battery chemistry.
The practical choice comes down to four checks: the voltage and battery type your device requires, how you want to charge, comparable energy or runtime rather than headline mAh, and whether product-specific electronics and protection features suit your use. The manufacturer specifications discussed here are not an independent head-to-head test.

Quick answer: choose by device first, charging workflow second
| Your priority | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional rechargeable cells and broad familiarity | Low-self-discharge NiMH | Uses the established 1.2 V NiMH format and a dedicated NiMH charger. |
| Charging a loose cell from a USB-C cable | USB-C rechargeable lithium | The cited SmallRig product has a built-in USB-C port and claims a regulated 1.5 V output. |
| A device with strict battery-voltage requirements | Whichever chemistry the manual specifies | Nominal 1.2 V NiMH and regulated 1.5 V lithium products can behave differently. |
| High-drain or safety-critical equipment | No universal winner | Use matched runtime data and the exact device requirements; this evidence does not establish a category-wide winner. |
Do not put a USB-C lithium cell into a NiMH charger unless both manufacturers explicitly state that exact pairing is supported. Likewise, do not assume a USB-C cell works in every product that accepts ordinary alkaline AA or AAA batteries.

USB-C is the charging interface
A USB-C rechargeable AA or AAA battery has a USB-C receptacle or cable arrangement for charging. It does not identify the cell chemistry. The SmallRig AA example is described by its manufacturer as a lithium battery with onboard electronics, an integrated USB-C charging port and a “Stable 1.5V Output.” Those are specifications for that model, not a definition of every USB-C AA or AAA product.

Regulated output changes the voltage behavior
A conventional cell’s voltage changes as it discharges. A regulated-output lithium product uses electronics to hold its external output near the stated level until its protection circuit ends discharge. That can help equipment designed around a steady supply, but it can also conflict with equipment that expects the voltage curve of a primary alkaline cell or a 1.2 V NiMH cell. A regulated 1.5 V claim is therefore a compatibility characteristic, not a guarantee.
How NiMH cells differ
Nominal voltage and charger requirement
Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) AA and AAA cells are rechargeable electrochemical cells normally specified around 1.2 V nominal. The cited ANSMANN maxE AA/HR6 product is rated at 1.2 V. NiMH cells should be charged in a charger designed to detect and charge NiMH cells; charger chemistry and cell-size support are not interchangeable by assumption.
Low-self-discharge is a variant, not a universal NiMH property
Low-self-discharge NiMH models are intended to retain more stored charge while sitting unused. ANSMANN’s maxE page makes model-specific retention and cycle-life claims, but those claims should not be generalized to all NiMH batteries. Standard NiMH, low-self-discharge NiMH and different brands or capacities can have different behavior.
Charging: USB-C cable versus NiMH charger
| Question | USB-C rechargeable lithium | NiMH |
|---|---|---|
| What charges the cell? | The product’s built-in USB-C port or supplied cable arrangement, following its instructions. | A charger specifically designed for NiMH cells and the supported AA/AAA sizes. |
| Is a separate cell charger required? | Not for a product that includes its own charging port and control electronics. | Usually yes, unless the exact product has an expressly supported integrated charging system. |
| Can the chargers be swapped? | Do not use a NiMH charger unless the lithium product and charger manufacturers explicitly approve it. | Do not charge NiMH cells through a USB-C lithium battery’s charging system. |
Safe USB-C charging workflow
- Read the battery’s charging instructions and identify whether the port is on the cell itself or on a proprietary cable or holder.
- Inspect the port and cable for damage, contamination or looseness before connecting power.
- Charge on a nonflammable, ventilated surface while following the manufacturer’s stated input requirements.
- Stop using the cell if it becomes unusually hot, swells, leaks or shows physical damage; built-in protection does not make a damaged cell safe.
- Disconnect and store the cell as instructed instead of leaving an unknown product permanently connected.
Safe NiMH charging workflow
- Confirm that the charger explicitly supports NiMH and the cell size (AA, AAA or both).
- Insert cells in the orientation and channel arrangement specified by the charger.
- Do not mix chemistries, damaged cells or incompatible sizes in one charging session.
- Use the charger’s completion indication and remove cells according to its instructions.
- Let a hot cell cool and investigate repeated overheating, charging errors or leakage before reuse.
Compatibility: check the device before buying batteries
Battery compartments that physically accept AA or AAA cells are not proof of electrical compatibility. The device manual has priority over a battery seller’s broad compatibility list.
- Identify the required size and chemistry. Look for wording such as alkaline, NiMH, lithium primary, rechargeable or a stated voltage range.
- Check the number of cells and polarity. A device using two cells may see a different total voltage depending on whether those cells are 1.2 V nominal NiMH or a regulated 1.5 V product.
- Read warnings about indicators and cutoff behavior. Battery gauges, low-battery warnings, flash recycle circuits and motor controllers may rely on a particular voltage curve.
- Verify the exact product specification. Confirm whether the candidate battery is regulated, its stated output, and any restrictions for series use or charging.
- Test conservatively if the manual allows both types. Start with a fully charged matched set, monitor heat and operation, and stop if the device reports errors or behaves abnormally.
Manufacturer claims of wide compatibility do not replace the device documentation. If the manual does not mention rechargeable or regulated-output cells, treat compatibility as unconfirmed rather than assuming the battery will work.

Runtime and capacity: why mAh alone is misleading
Convert capacity to energy when voltage differs
Milliamp-hours (mAh) measure charge, not energy. A rough energy comparison uses watt-hours: Wh = Ah × V. Because the two categories can operate at different voltages, comparing a 1.2 V NiMH mAh figure directly with a 1.5 V regulated lithium mAh figure can produce the wrong conclusion. Real runtime also depends on discharge current, cutoff voltage, temperature, cell age and the device’s electronics.
The cited NiMH specification
ANSMANN’s undated maxE AA/HR6 product page lists 2100 mAh and 2.5 Wh at 1.2 V for that specific model. The 2.5 Wh figure is the more useful headline for cross-voltage discussion, but it still does not predict runtime in every device.

What is not established
No controlled test in the available evidence compares USB-C rechargeable lithium AA or AAA cells with NiMH cells under the same load. There is therefore no supported universal claim that either category lasts longer, has higher usable capacity or wins in a particular high-drain device. For an important application, seek runtime data measured in the exact device or under a clearly comparable load.
Storage and self-discharge
For equipment used only occasionally, self-discharge can matter more than the label capacity. Choose a low-self-discharge NiMH model when you want the conventional NiMH route but expect cells to sit for weeks or months. Check the exact model’s storage guidance and specifications; “NiMH” alone does not establish a retention rate.
The ANSMANN maxE page contains conflicting one-year statements—approximately 80% of initial capacity in one passage and up to 95% in another. Because the manufacturer’s own page is internally inconsistent, do not treat either percentage as a settled general fact or apply it to other cells. Obtain a clarified datasheet if that figure affects a purchase decision.

- 【500+ CYCLES EACH — 4,000+ COMBINED REUSES】Each AA battery is engineered for 500+ recharge cycles—4,000+ combined across this 8-pack. Recharge and reuse in compatible smart locks, Xbox controllers, LED flashlights, electric toothbrushes, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless doorbells, and Christmas lights. Buy fewer disposables, lower long-term costs, and reduce waste. Six protections guard against overcharge, over-discharge, overcurrent, short circuit, overvoltage, and overheating.
USB-C lithium retention is likewise model-dependent. The available material does not provide a controlled retention comparison with low-self-discharge NiMH, so storage claims should remain product-specific.

USB-C lithium products
SmallRig lists overcurrent, overtemperature, short-circuit and overcharge protection for its cited USB-C lithium AA model. These are manufacturer claims for that product. Protection circuits reduce specific electrical risks but do not eliminate hazards from crushed, swollen, wet, counterfeit or otherwise damaged cells. Use the battery only as instructed and avoid modifying or opening it.
NiMH products
NiMH safety depends on the cell, charger, contacts and charging procedure. Use a charger intended for NiMH chemistry, keep contacts clean, and follow the charger’s temperature and completion indications. A NiMH charger is not a universal charger for lithium cells, and a USB-C lithium charging circuit is not a universal NiMH charger.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cost, lifespan and environmental claims
Rechargeable cells can reduce purchases of disposable batteries, but the financial and environmental result depends on purchase price, usable life, electricity, failure rate, recycling and how often the cells are used. The available product pages do not provide a comparable lifecycle assessment or independently verified cost-per-use figure.
ANSMANN states “up to 1500 recharges” for its maxE product. That is a manufacturer cycle-life claim for that model, not a guaranteed result for every cell, charging pattern or device. USB-C lithium cycle life is also product-specific, and no matched cycle-life comparison is established here. Avoid choosing either chemistry on an assumed universal sustainability or savings advantage.

Which type fits common use cases?
Remote controls, clocks and occasional household devices
Low-self-discharge NiMH is a practical default if the device manual supports NiMH and you already have—or are willing to buy—a compatible charger. Its conventional format and replaceable loose-cell workflow suit households that use several AA or AAA cells.
Cameras, lights and other devices where voltage behavior matters
Read the manual carefully. A regulated 1.5 V USB-C lithium product may behave differently from 1.2 V NiMH as the cell discharges. The device may require a particular voltage range, reject a regulated cell, or display an inaccurate battery indicator. Do not infer suitability from the physical fit.
Travel or a small USB-C charging kit
USB-C cells can reduce the need to carry a separate NiMH charger, provided the exact product’s port, cable and input instructions fit your travel setup. This is a convenience advantage, not proof of longer runtime or lower lifetime cost.
High-drain or important equipment
Prioritize the device maker’s approved battery types and credible runtime data under a comparable load. The available specifications do not justify calling USB-C lithium or NiMH the blanket winner for high-drain use.

The same decision principles apply to AAA cells, but do not transfer AA numbers to AAA. The cited ANSMANN figure of 2100 mAh and 2.5 Wh belongs to its AA/HR6 product, and the SmallRig specification cited here is for an AA model. Exact AAA capacity, output regulation, charging arrangement and protection must be verified on the AAA product’s own documentation.
Troubleshooting common problems
The device will not turn on with a USB-C cell
- Confirm the cell is charged and inserted with correct polarity.
- Check whether the device requires 1.2 V NiMH, a particular voltage range or non-regulated cells.
- Verify that the battery’s protection circuit has not cut off after an overload or short.
- Try the device’s documented battery type rather than forcing continued use.
The battery or charger becomes hot
- Stop charging or operating immediately if heat is unusual, rapidly increasing or accompanied by swelling, odor or leakage.
- Check that the charger chemistry and cell size match.
- Inspect contacts, cables and the cell for damage; replace suspect components.
Runtime is much shorter than expected
- Do not compare mAh labels from different voltages as if they were equal.
- Account for the device’s load, temperature, cutoff and battery age.
- Use watt-hours or a matched in-device runtime measurement, and check whether the claimed capacity is specified at a particular discharge condition.
A simple purchase checklist
- Device manual confirms the size and acceptable chemistry or voltage range.
- USB-C model’s regulated-output specification is compatible with that device, or the NiMH model is explicitly supported.
- Charging equipment matches the chemistry; no assumed cross-charging.
- AA and AAA figures are taken from the correct product, not transferred between sizes.
- Capacity is compared in Wh or with matched runtime data.
- Retention, cycle-life and protection claims are treated as model-specific manufacturer specifications.
- Cells are sourced with clear instructions, warranty information and recycling guidance.
Bottom line
Choose low-self-discharge NiMH for the conventional, well-understood rechargeable-cell workflow when your device supports 1.2 V NiMH and a dedicated charger is acceptable. Consider USB-C rechargeable lithium when direct USB-C charging is the deciding convenience and your device documentation supports that product’s regulated output. Check the manual before either purchase, keep charging systems separate, and do not declare a runtime, cost or environmental winner from mAh labels or manufacturer claims alone.
