Euro Truck Simulator 2 should run on a modest modern PC if it meets Steam’s listed minimum, but that specification is only a launch-and-playability floor. It does not promise a particular frame rate, resolution, graphics preset, DLC load or mod count. Use the requirement block for your operating system, then compare your processor, graphics hardware, VRAM, memory and free storage component by component.

Windows
Windows has separate minimum and recommended CPU and GPU classes. Both rows specify a 64-bit edition of Windows 10, so a 32-bit installation does not satisfy the published requirement. The recommended row increases the processor class and system memory while retaining the listed 2 GB VRAM and storage figures.
macOS
Steam lists macOS 11 (Big Sur), not an unrestricted “any recent macOS” requirement. Apple hardware must also match the listed quad-core CPU speed and graphics class. A Mac that runs a newer operating system is not automatically guaranteed to meet the graphics or processor requirement; check the actual model specifications.

SteamOS/Linux
The Linux block names Ubuntu 12.04 and calls for recent binary ATI or NVIDIA drivers, with a warning that MESA may not work reliably. Treat the distribution and driver wording as part of the requirement, not as optional advice. A different Linux distribution or graphics stack may need additional compatibility work even when its raw hardware appears fast enough.
What “minimum” and “recommended” mean
Minimum is a floor, not a performance guarantee
Meeting the minimum row means your system is within the developer’s published baseline for starting the game. It does not establish a target frame rate, resolution, visual preset, traffic density, loading time or stability level. Steam and the official support material do not publish an FPS guarantee for that hardware tier.
On a machine close to the floor, you may need to select conservative resolution and quality settings, close other applications and accept more variable performance in busy scenes. Those are practical possibilities, not measured promises for every configuration.

Recommended is a stronger starting point
The recommended row is the safer choice for players who want more headroom for visual settings and background tasks. It still is not a specification for a particular monitor refresh rate or ultra-quality preset. Your display resolution, driver version, cooling, laptop power limits and game-world conditions can change the result.
How to check your own computer
Windows check
- Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition, system type, processor model and installed RAM. Confirm that the system type is 64-bit.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, select Performance, and inspect the CPU and Memory panels. Select GPU to identify the active graphics adapter and its dedicated video memory.
- Open File Explorer > This PC and check the free space on the drive where Steam will install the game. The listing requires 25 GB available for the base installation.
- Compare each item with the Windows column rather than judging by one component alone. A fast processor cannot compensate for an unsupported operating system or insufficient graphics memory.
macOS check
- Choose Apple menu > About This Mac (or System Settings > General > About on newer interfaces) and record the macOS version, chip or processor description and memory.
- Use System Information to inspect Graphics/Displays and identify the GPU model and available VRAM. Integrated graphics may report shared memory differently from the dedicated VRAM wording in Steam’s table.
- In System Settings > General > Storage, verify that the installation volume has at least the listed free capacity, with additional room reserved for updates and your other files.
- Match the results against the macOS block. Do not infer compatibility solely from the Mac’s purchase year or from the fact that another game runs on it.
Linux check
- Confirm your distribution and release in its system-information panel or with the distribution’s standard release command.
- Identify the CPU model, installed RAM and GPU with your desktop’s hardware utility or the tools supplied by your distribution.
- Check that the active graphics driver is a recent binary ATI or NVIDIA driver when applicable. The Steam listing specifically cautions that MESA may not work reliably for this game.
- Verify free space on the Steam library filesystem and compare the complete result with the SteamOS/Linux row, including the operating-system and driver conditions.
How to interpret each requirement
Processor
ETS2’s CPU comparison is about class as well as the model name. The Windows minimum examples are an Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200; the recommended examples move to an Intel Core i5-9600 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600. Compare the generation, core configuration and sustained clock behavior of your chip instead of assuming that a newer product number always wins. Laptop processors can also run below their advertised speeds when power or temperature limits apply.
Graphics processor and VRAM
The minimum Windows graphics examples are a GeForce GTX 660, Radeon RX 460 or Intel HD 630. The recommended examples are a GeForce GTX 1660 or Radeon RX 590. Steam lists 2 GB of VRAM in both Windows tiers, so check dedicated video memory as well as the GPU’s name. Integrated graphics may use system memory rather than having a separate VRAM pool; that architecture can make a direct comparison less precise.

System RAM
System memory is listed separately from VRAM. The Windows minimum calls for 8 GB, while the recommended tier calls for 12 GB; the macOS and Linux rows use the same memory figures. Operating-system processes, browsers, recording software and large mod collections consume RAM before the game loads, so installed capacity and free capacity are different questions.
Storage
Steam lists 25 GB of available space for the base game on all three platforms. This is a capacity requirement, not a statement about download size or future content. Keep additional free space for patches, temporary installation files, save data and any downloadable content or mods you choose to add; the official listing does not quantify those extras.
Variables the official table does not settle
Resolution and refresh rate
The requirements do not specify whether the target is 720p, 1080p, ultrawide or a higher resolution, nor do they promise 30, 60 or higher frames per second. Higher resolutions increase the work done by the GPU, while high-refresh displays make frame-time consistency more noticeable. If a particular resolution or refresh rate matters to you, treat the listed tier as a starting point and leave graphics headroom rather than assuming the recommended row is a guarantee.

Graphics preset and visual features
No official requirement row is tied to Low, Medium, High or Ultra settings. Reflections, shadows, mirrors, vegetation and scaling options can affect performance differently, so a system that starts the game may still need settings adjustments. Change one demanding option at a time and watch for smoothness in cities and intersections, not only on an empty stretch of highway.
DLC, mods and background software
The published figures describe the game listing, not a maximum mod count or a complete DLC library. Additional map content and texture-heavy mods can increase storage use and memory pressure. Browsers, streaming tools and overlays also compete for CPU, GPU and RAM resources. Close unnecessary programs when diagnosing a borderline system so you are testing the game rather than the entire desktop workload.

Identify the limiting component first
- Unsupported operating system: an otherwise fast computer still fails the published platform condition. Check whether an operating-system upgrade is supported before buying hardware.
- Insufficient RAM: upgrading system memory can reduce swapping and improve multitasking, provided the motherboard and operating system support the new capacity.
- Weak GPU or too little VRAM: a graphics upgrade is the relevant fix; adding RAM does not increase the dedicated VRAM on a discrete card.
- Older CPU: processor limits often show up as uneven frame delivery in complex scenes. A CPU upgrade may require a new motherboard and memory, so check platform compatibility and power requirements.
- Low storage: install to a drive with the required free capacity and leave room for updates. Moving unrelated files can solve a space shortage without changing hardware.
Use a complete comparison, not a single benchmark number
When comparing two candidate PCs, record the operating system, exact CPU, exact GPU, VRAM, system RAM and free storage. Then add your intended resolution, frame-rate target, graphics preset, DLC and mods. The official requirements do not provide enough information to rank two machines by an isolated CPU or GPU label, especially when one is a laptop or uses integrated graphics.
Buying and installing the official version
SCS Software’s official download page directs buyers to purchase a Steam key for the full version. After redeeming the key in Steam, select an installation library with the required free space and let Steam handle the game files and updates. The store listing remains the authoritative place to recheck the platform-specific requirements before purchase.

Troubleshooting when ETS2 will not start
- Recheck the entire requirement block for your operating system, including 64-bit Windows, the named macOS or Ubuntu condition, RAM, GPU class, VRAM and free storage.
- Update the graphics driver using the hardware maker’s supported package. On Linux, pay particular attention to the listing’s requirement for recent binary ATI or NVIDIA drivers.
- Use Steam’s file-verification option to repair an incomplete or corrupted installation, then restart Steam.
- Consult the SCS Software support page. Its troubleshooting guidance says to check the minimum requirements and try the OpenGL and DirectX launch options. Test one option at a time and note whether the symptom changes.
- If the game launches but performance is poor, lower resolution or the most demanding visual settings, close background applications and test without optional mods. These steps address workload; they do not change the published hardware requirement.
A practical go/no-go checklist
- Your operating system matches the correct Steam platform block.
- Your CPU is at least in the listed minimum class; compare the exact model rather than only its brand.
- Your GPU is in the listed class and has the required 2 GB VRAM where specified.
- Your computer has the listed system RAM with enough free memory for other software.
- The Steam library drive has at least 25 GB free before installation.
- You understand that minimum and recommended are not FPS or resolution promises.
- Your expected display resolution, graphics preset, DLC and mods leave reasonable performance headroom.
If every applicable item passes, your PC meets the published entry conditions for its platform. Whether it delivers the experience you want depends on the performance target you set and the workload you add beyond the base game.
