USB-C Drives Add Phone Storage for Files, Not Apps

A compatible USB-C flash drive or external SSD can hold files outside your phone, but it does not usually expand built-in storage or app capacity. Check connection, format, power, and platform support first.

Yes—you can add removable physical storage without a microSD slot. Connect a compatible USB-C flash drive or portable SSD, then manage files on it with a supported file app. This gives you somewhere external to keep or move files; it does not generally increase the phone’s built-in capacity or make the drive available for installing apps.

What an external drive adds—and what it does not

A USB drive or SSD is a separate storage device. Depending on the phone, drive, format, and file app, you can browse files on it and copy or move files between it and the phone. That makes it useful for offloading photos and videos, carrying a file library, or transferring files between devices.

Do not treat it as an internal-storage upgrade. The documented workflows cover accessing and managing external files, not turning a drive into built-in capacity for apps or every app’s data. Keep files you need available to apps on the phone’s own storage unless the app explicitly supports working with an external drive.

Choose the kind of storage that fits your use

Option Best suited to Check before choosing
USB-C flash drive Portable file offload, photo and video copies, and moving files between devices Phone compatibility, connector, file-app support, drive format, and whether an adapter is needed. It remains external storage.
Portable external SSD Larger files or a larger removable file library Phone and connector compatibility, format, adapters, and power. Apple warns that external hard drives often require external power; that does not mean every SSD does.
Cloud storage Accessing or syncing files across devices without carrying a drive Internet access, service terms, and possible subscription fees. Cloud storage is not physical storage attached to the phone.

A USB-C phone flash drive is the straightforward category to look for if portability and file transfers are the goal. SanDisk describes a USB-C Phone Drive product family with capacities up to 1TB; that is a manufacturer-stated maximum for that product family, not an independent test or a capacity claim for all phone drives. When cloud or network storage makes more sense

Cloud services can make files accessible across devices without carrying a drive, while a file server can provide access over a network. Both are different from attaching physical storage to the phone: cloud access depends on a service and internet availability, and cloud services may charge subscription fees. Apple describes external storage, file servers, and cloud services as file-transfer or access options. Apple’s file-transfer guidance

Compatibility checks before you buy

  • Phone and model: Verify the exact handset supports external storage; do not generalize from another model’s compatibility listing.
  • Connector: Match the phone’s port and the drive’s plug, accounting for any required adapter or OTG support.
  • File system: Check that the phone or file app can read the drive’s format. For iPhone, use Apple’s listed formats and single-data-partition requirement.
  • Power: A larger drive may need external power. Confirm the drive’s requirements and whether a powered hub is an option for your setup.
  • Purpose: Decide whether you need a removable place for files or a workflow such as direct recording. Do not assume that a drive supported for file browsing will work with every app or recording feature.
  • Product-specific limits: SanDisk’s compatibility page lists certain iPhone 15, 16, and 17 series models and says format and feature limits apply; that page’s stated information is current as of March 18, 2026. It is not evidence that every drive or feature works with every iPhone. SanDisk’s iPhone compatibility information
