USB-C identifies the connector shape, not the cable’s charging power or data speed. Read the separate power and data markings to learn what a USB-C-to-USB-C cable is designed to carry, then check whether any USB-IF logo corresponds to a currently certified product. A 60W or 240W mark describes the cable’s capability; it does not force every charger and device to deliver that amount.
What the markings actually tell you
A USB-C cable label can communicate two independent capabilities:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Power capability: usually shown as a 60W or 240W USB-IF power icon or logo on USB-C-to-USB-C cables covered by the compliance program.
- Data capability: a rate such as 20Gbps or 40Gbps, when the applicable marking requirement applies.
The connector itself is only the USB Type-C form factor. Two cables with identical reversible plugs can have very different power and data capabilities. The charger, computer, phone, dock, display and workload also have to support the relevant level, so the cable’s marking is a capability statement rather than a guarantee of the performance of an entire setup.

What a wattage logo means
USB-IF’s current USB-C-to-USB-C cable compliance guidance specifies a 60W or 240W capability marking. The number is the maximum power capability the cable is intended to communicate under the program. It is not a promise that a connected device will draw that much, nor does it override limits imposed by the charger, device, charging protocol or system configuration.
#1 Best Overall
- Durable Design: Reinforced nylon exterior and a robust core ensure this cable withstands up to 5,000 bends, outlasting other brands
- Fast Charging: Supports Power Delivery for up to 60W high-speed charging when paired with a USB-C charger
- Versatile Compatibility: Works with virtually all USB-C devices, including phones, tablets, and laptops
- High-Speed Data Transfer: Transfer files quickly with 480Mbps data transfer speeds
- Included Accessories: Comes with a hook-and-loop cable tie for easy organization and a welcome guide for hassle-free setup
For example, a cable marked 240W can be suitable where a setup requires a high-power cable, but a lower-power charger or computer can still provide less. Conversely, a 60W cable should not be selected for a setup whose stated requirement exceeds 60W merely because its connector fits.
Why the number matters when buying
Start with the highest power requirement in your intended setup. If the charger and device combination is designed around 60W or less, a 60W-marked cable communicates that capability. If the setup calls for more, look for the 240W marking. Buying the largest number by default adds no established benefit when the equipment does not use it.
These markings apply to USB-C-to-USB-C cable categories seeking the USB-IF compliance program. Do not assume that a similar-looking cable with a different connector arrangement carries the same marking requirements.

Data-rate markings: 20Gbps, 40Gbps and the USB 2.0 exception
Read a data rate as a separate axis
A data-rate mark describes the cable’s stated data performance, not its charging capability. A 20Gbps mark tells you the cable is identified for that data rate under the relevant requirements; it says nothing by itself about how many watts it can carry. Likewise, a power mark does not reveal whether the cable is suitable for a high-speed transfer.
When data speed matters, look for an explicit rate such as 20Gbps or 40Gbps. USB-IF’s requirements say applicable USB-C-to-USB-C cables need an appropriate data-rate marking, with an exception for USB 2.0 High-Speed USB-C-to-USB-C cables in the covered group. Therefore, an unmarked cable is not automatically a high-speed cable, and the absence of a rate can be consistent with the USB 2.0 exception rather than evidence of a faster mode.

What a data mark does not prove
A rate printed on the jacket does not, on its own, establish support for every display, dock or alternate operating mode. Those uses depend on the capabilities and compatibility of the connected equipment. Treat the printed rate as the cable’s data-performance label and verify the requirements of the specific peripheral or workflow separately.
Combined marks: reading two numbers together
Some approved logos combine power and data information. USB-IF gives a 20Gbps/60W combined logo as an example. Read the two parts independently:
- 20Gbps is the stated data-rate dimension.
- 60W is the stated power-capability dimension.
The combined mark is useful because it puts both decision points on one cable, but it does not turn either number into a guarantee for the complete device chain. A computer or dock that supports less than 20Gbps will remain the limiting component, and a charger that supplies less than 60W will not be made more powerful by the cable.
Does a USB-IF logo mean the cable is certified?
What certification represents
USB-IF says its certified USB logos are reserved for products that have passed compliance testing and are currently on the Integrators List. A company also needs a current trademark license agreement to use the logo. In other words, the logo program has a defined testing, listing and licensing scope; it is not simply a decorative claim that a manufacturer can add without meeting those conditions.
Certification still has a limited meaning. It indicates that the product passed the applicable compliance process and is authorized to bear the relevant logo. It does not guarantee that every charger, host, dock, display or workload will reach the cable’s maximum power or data rating.

How to verify a specific product
- Identify the exact cable product, including its manufacturer, model designation and any variant or length information shown on the packaging.
- Use USB-IF’s public certified-product search and look for that exact product rather than a similar cable from the same company.
- Check the search’s date context. The public search defaults to products certified within the last two years, and the registry is maintained by member companies.
- If the product is not found, contact the manufacturer. USB-IF specifically advises contacting the manufacturer when a particular product does not appear in the search.
A missing entry is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself that the cable is unsafe or unusable. The listing is evidence of USB-IF logo certification, while a cable can still be sold without claiming that certification.
A practical method for decoding any cable
- Confirm the connector ends. Make sure the cable is USB-C-to-USB-C if you are relying on the USB-IF C-to-C power and data markings described here. Connector fit alone does not establish capability.
- Find the power icon or wattage. Look for the 60W or 240W marking. Treat it as the cable’s stated power capability and compare it with the requirement of the charger-and-device combination.
- Find the data rate. If you need fast file transfers or a high-throughput dock, look for an explicit rate such as 20Gbps or 40Gbps. Do not infer speed from the USB-C shape.
- Separate combined numbers. On a mark such as 20Gbps/60W, evaluate the data and power figures independently.
- Check certification claims. If the package presents a USB-IF certified logo, search the exact product in the public registry and account for its recent-certification date filter.
- Match the physical design. Choose a length, connector orientation and flexibility that work in the intended setup. A correctly rated cable that cannot reach or comfortably route to the equipment is still the wrong choice.
Choosing a cable for common requirements
| What you need to decide | Mark or evidence to look for | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Power capability | 60W or 240W USB-IF power mark | The cable’s stated power capability under the applicable USB-IF cable program |
| High-speed data | 20Gbps or 40Gbps data-rate mark | The cable’s stated data-rate category; connected equipment can still limit actual performance |
| USB 2.0 C-to-C cable | May have no data-rate mark under the stated exception | Absence of a rate does not identify a faster mode |
| Combined power and data requirement | Example: 20Gbps/60W logo | Both capabilities are communicated on one mark and must be evaluated separately |
| Certified-logo claim | Exact product in USB-IF’s public certified-product search | Evidence that the product is certified to bear the logo within the registry’s scope |
Use the smallest capability that satisfies the actual requirement rather than treating the highest printed number as universally better. For a basic charging connection, data rate may not be a deciding factor. For a storage transfer or dock, data rate becomes important, while the required power mark depends on the equipment being powered.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“USB-C means fast charging”
Why it fails: USB-C names the connector family, not a wattage class.
Correction: Read the explicit 60W or 240W capability mark and compare it with the system’s requirement.
“A 240W cable makes my laptop charge at 240W”
Why it fails: The cable’s rating is only one part of the power path.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why older packaging can be confusing
USB-IF’s compliance updates record the 60W/240W cable-logo requirement as effective in March 2022, with 240W logo enforcement effective in December 2021. The current cable-and-connector compliance document, Revision 2.1b, is dated March 28, 2025. These dates matter when comparing older stock, archived listings or packaging designed under earlier rules: a statement that was accurate for an older compliance phase should not automatically be treated as a current consumer guarantee.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
USB-IF describes its cable-and-connector document as a technical compliance specification covering mechanical, environmental, electrical-performance and compliance requirements for USB Type-C connectors and passive cable assemblies. It is not a consumer decoding chart, so packaging details and the public product registry remain important when identifying a particular retail cable.
What to check before purchasing a replacement
- Power: Select 60W or 240W according to the real requirement of the charger-and-device combination.
- Data: Select an explicit data rate when transfers, storage or dock bandwidth matter; do not assume one from the connector.
- Certification: Verify the exact product if a USB-IF logo is advertised.
- Compatibility: Confirm the host, charger, dock, display and workload support the desired capability.
- Physical fit: Check both connector ends, cable length and flexibility for the installation.
- Scope: Make sure the cable type matches the USB-C-to-USB-C category covered by the markings you are using to make the decision.
The most reliable choice is therefore not the cable with the biggest number, but the cable whose clearly identified power and data capabilities match the equipment you actually intend to connect.
