The best Samsung DeX alternatives are Motorola Smart Connect and Android’s newer desktop windowing on devices that support them. Both can place phone apps in separate windows on a larger display, but neither is a universal Android feature. Your exact handset must support the required display path—wired USB-C video, wireless display, or PC integration—before an adapter or monitor will help.
Samsung DeX itself remains a useful baseline on compatible Galaxy phones, although Samsung treats DeX on an external display and DeX for PC as different workflows. The practical choice comes down to phone model support, wired versus wireless connection, app behavior, and whether you need a monitor or a Windows-PC companion.

What counts as a DeX alternative?
A phone becomes “desktop-like” when its software can place several mobile apps on an external screen, arrange them in windows, and accept pointer and keyboard input. That is different from ordinary screen mirroring, which simply enlarges the phone’s portrait or landscape screen. A useful alternative therefore needs three layers to line up:

- Video output: wired USB-C video, wireless display, or a supported PC connection.
- Accessories and apps: a display, adapter or dock, input devices, and apps that behave correctly in multi-window mode.
Motorola Smart Connect is the clearest manufacturer-specific alternative documented for compatible Motorola phones. Android desktop windowing is a platform feature available on some supported devices. Samsung DeX remains relevant for Galaxy owners, but DeX for PC has a separate software and version policy.

Official documentation does not establish an across-brand performance ranking. Motorola describes HDMI as lower-latency and smoother than its wireless guidance, but that is manufacturer guidance rather than an independent test.
Motorola Smart Connect: the closest documented replacement
What it offers
On a compatible Motorola handset, Smart Connect can open phone apps in multiple windows on a TV, monitor, or other external display. Motorola also documents separate experiences for watching video, video calls, games, mirroring, and connecting with a PC. This makes it more than a simple cast function: the external screen can act as a mobile desktop while the phone remains the computing device.
Compatibility is model-by-model
Do not assume that every phone in a Motorola family has the same capabilities. Motorola’s compatibility chart separates wired USB-C display, wireless Miracast display, and PC support into different columns. An entry can support one path without supporting the others, and Motorola notes that product availability varies by region.
Before buying a monitor, cable, or phone, look up the exact model number in the current chart. A family name such as Edge, Razr, Moto G, or ThinkPhone is not enough to establish video output or PC integration.
Wired and wireless display choices
For a wired setup, Motorola documents a video-enabled USB 3.1 USB-C cable or a USB-C-to-HDMI cable or adapter with a compatible phone. Some dock-enabled displays can connect directly over USB-C. The phone must support video output over USB-C; a USB-C connector by itself does not guarantee that capability.
Wireless Smart Connect can use Miracast when the specific handset and receiving display support it. Wireless avoids a cable but can introduce more delay or variability. Motorola describes HDMI as offering reduced latency and smoother performance relative to its wireless connection guidance. Treat that as the manufacturer’s description, not as a measured result that applies to every display or network.

Input and app behavior
A Bluetooth mouse can control the desktop. If you do not have one, Motorola says the phone can work as a trackpad or air mouse. A physical keyboard is useful for long typing sessions but is optional.

Compatibility can also vary by app version and by whether the app follows Android’s multi-window rules, so a desktop mode does not guarantee that every app will fill the screen or expose all of its controls.
Android desktop windowing
How the platform feature works
Google’s Android documentation describes desktop windowing as a mode in which several apps run in separate, resizable windows that can be organized on a larger workspace. On supported devices, connected displays can provide a desktop-style arrangement instead of a single mirrored phone screen.
Why support is difficult to generalize
Google explicitly says desktop windowing is not available on every device and that the experience can vary. Android version alone is therefore not a sufficient buying criterion. The phone maker controls whether the feature is enabled, how an external display is handled, and which connection methods are exposed.
Check the manufacturer’s specifications or support documentation for your exact model before purchasing accessories. If the documentation does not mention desktop windowing or external-display support, assume that the phone may offer only ordinary casting or mirroring until the maker confirms otherwise.

Window and app limitations
Resizable windows are useful only when apps cooperate. Samsung’s developer FAQ notes that apps that do not comply with Android multi-window standards can remain fixed-size rather than becoming freely resizable. Similar behavior can occur in other desktop-style implementations: an app may open in a centered phone-shaped window, refuse a particular orientation, or leave controls inaccessible until you return to the handset.

- CHECK YOUR DEVICE FIRST( USB-C MALE TO HDMI FEMALE): This adapter works with USB Type C ports that support DP Alt Mode. Want to be sure before you buy? Check your device specs - not every USB-C port sends video.
- ONE-WAY VIDEO & AUDIO OUTPUT: This adapter sends video and audio from your USB-C device to an HDMI display. It does not support charging, and it is not designed for HDMI-to-USB-C direction.
- 4K@60Hz USB-C TO HDMI ADAPTER CABLE: Get clear 4K picture at 60Hz from a compatible USB-C laptop or tablet. It also works with older HDMI 1.4, 1.3 and 1.2 screens.
- PLUG AND PLAY, NO SETUP: Turn your USB-C port into an HDMI port with no drivers and no installation. What you see depends on your device and your screen.
- EXTEND YOUR REACH: Going from USB-C male to HDMI female lets you keep using the HDMI cable you already have, and place your laptop or phone where you want it.
Samsung DeX remains a separate baseline
External-display DeX
Samsung documents DeX on an external display through a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable, DeX Pad or DeX Station docks, and wireless display connections on compatible equipment. These methods are designed for a monitor or television and should be evaluated separately from PC integration.
DeX for PC is not the same workflow
Samsung’s support guidance states that DeX for PC is not supported on models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later and directs users toward Link to Windows instead. That restriction does not mean every form of external-display DeX is unavailable; Samsung documents the cable, adapter, dock, and wireless-display paths separately. Confirm the operating system and One UI version on the specific Galaxy phone before planning a PC-based setup.
Check your phone before buying anything
- Identify the exact model. Use the full model designation shown in Settings or on the phone’s support page. “Android phone” or a product family name is too broad.
- Choose the target. Decide whether you want a monitor or TV, a wireless display, or a desktop window inside a PC workflow. The requirements differ.
- Confirm the display path. Look for explicit wired USB-C video, wireless Miracast, or PC support. A USB-C port without video output cannot drive a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter.
- Check software versions. For Galaxy phones, verify Android and One UI versions when considering DeX for PC. For other phones, check whether the maker enables desktop windowing or Smart Connect on that build.
- Check regional availability. Motorola’s chart warns that products and capabilities vary by region. A model sold in one market may not be offered, or may not have the same accessory support, in another.
- Review app needs. Make a short list of the apps you depend on and check whether they support multi-window, landscape orientation, and external displays.
Step-by-step: wired Motorola Smart Connect setup
Use this sequence when your handset’s compatibility entry lists wired display support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Prepare the display. Set the monitor or TV to the HDMI input you intend to use, or select the USB-C input on a display that accepts video directly.
- Use a video-capable connection. Connect the phone with a video-enabled USB 3.1 USB-C cable, or connect a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable to the display. A charging-only cable will not carry a picture.
- Unlock and approve prompts. Follow the Smart Connect prompt on the phone and select the external-display or mobile-desktop experience rather than simple mirroring when the choice appears.
- Pair input devices if desired. Pair a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard through Android Bluetooth settings. Without a mouse, use the phone’s trackpad or air-mouse control described by Motorola.
- Arrange windows. Open the apps you need, resize or reposition them, and keep the phone nearby for notifications and controls that do not appear on the external display.
- Test each critical app. Confirm sign-in, audio, camera, drag-and-drop, and keyboard behavior before relying on the setup for work or a presentation.
If the screen stays blank, disconnect the adapter and recheck the handset’s wired-display entry. Replacing a cable cannot add USB-C video capability that the phone does not provide.
Step-by-step: wireless display setup
- Confirm wireless support on both ends. The phone must list wireless display or Miracast support, and the TV, monitor adapter, or receiver must accept that standard.
- Put the devices on the required network or pairing mode. Follow the receiver’s instructions, then open the phone’s cast, Smart Connect, or wireless-display control.
- Select the receiver. Choose the display from the discovered-device list and approve pairing or a PIN if requested.
- Switch modes if available. Select the mobile-desktop experience when offered. Otherwise, the phone may mirror its screen rather than create a multi-window workspace.
- Evaluate delay before demanding tasks. Wireless can be adequate for documents and video calls but less comfortable for fast pointer movement or games. Motorola’s lower-latency HDMI description is guidance, not a guarantee for every network.
Using a phone with a PC
PC integration is a distinct capability in Motorola’s chart and in Samsung’s product documentation. A phone that can drive a monitor is not automatically able to present a desktop inside a PC, and a handset with a PC companion feature may not support wired video output.
For Motorola, check the PC column for the exact handset rather than inferring support from wired or wireless display support. For Samsung, check the current DeX for PC policy and Android/One UI version. Samsung’s stated cutoff is Android 15 with One UI 7 or later on unsupported models; its guidance points affected users to Link to Windows.

Accessories: what is optional and what is essential
- USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable: Needed for an HDMI display when the phone supports wired USB-C video. The adapter cannot create video output on an incompatible handset.
- Video-capable USB-C cable: Required for a direct USB-C display connection or for a compatible dock. Verify that the cable carries video, not only power and data.
- Dock or hub: Useful when you need HDMI, USB peripherals, charging, or Ethernet in one place. Its ports do not override the phone’s own display limitations.
- Portable monitor or television: A display is the viewing surface, not the desktop feature itself. Confirm its input and wireless-display standards.
- Bluetooth mouse and keyboard: Optional but valuable for window management and long typing. Smart Connect can use the phone as a trackpad or air mouse when a separate mouse is unavailable.

The adapter works for charging but the display is blank
Charging proves only that the USB-C connection supplies power. Recheck whether the phone supports video over USB-C, then verify that the cable or adapter is video-capable and that the display is on the correct input.
The phone mirrors instead of showing windows
Mirroring and desktop mode are different functions. Look for the phone maker’s desktop or external-display option after connecting. If the handset supports only casting, it may not be able to create a multi-window workspace.
The phone is missing from a wireless-display list
Confirm that the handset supports Miracast or the receiver’s required standard. Update the receiver’s pairing mode, keep the devices within range, and check whether regional or model-specific support excludes the phone.

DeX for PC disappeared after an update
Check the Android and One UI versions. Samsung states that DeX for PC is not supported on models running Android 15 with One UI 7 or later and directs users to Link to Windows. External-display DeX is documented separately, so evaluate that option independently.
Performance feels delayed
Wireless display adds network and encoding variables. Test a wired HDMI path if the handset supports it, use the display’s recommended input mode, and close unnecessary apps. The manufacturer’s wired-versus-wireless guidance is not an independent benchmark, so actual results depend on the phone, receiver, network, and workload.
Which alternative fits your situation?
You already own a compatible Motorola phone
Start with Smart Connect. Its model chart lets you distinguish wired display, wireless Miracast, and PC support, so you can buy only the accessories your handset needs.
You want a standards-based Android feature
Investigate Android desktop windowing on the exact device. This is appropriate when you want resizable app windows but do not need a maker-specific PC workflow. Confirm availability with the manufacturer because Google does not make it universal.
You own a compatible Galaxy phone
Use Samsung’s external-display DeX documentation as the primary reference. Decide first whether your destination is a monitor/TV or a PC; the two DeX workflows have different requirements and version support.
You are choosing a new phone
Put display support ahead of accessory shopping. Compare exact model entries for wired video, wireless display, and PC integration, then verify regional availability and the apps you rely on. No official source in this comparison establishes a universal performance winner across Motorola, Samsung, and other Android implementations.
Keeping the setup reliable
- Record the phone’s exact model and Android build so future accessory purchases use the same reference.
- Keep the compatibility documentation for your region bookmarked and recheck it after major software updates.
- Carry a known-good video cable if you depend on a wired presentation setup.
- Test external-display behavior after an operating-system update, especially on Galaxy phones where DeX for PC policy is version-sensitive.
- Keep a fallback plan: the phone’s own screen, a second cable, or ordinary screen mirroring may be available even when desktop mode is not.
A DeX alternative is therefore a combination of supported phone hardware, software, display protocol, and app behavior. Verify all four before treating an Android phone as a dependable desktop replacement.
