If your Windows PC has no Bluetooth, a USB Bluetooth adapter can add it. Choose one that supports your Windows version and the features your specific keyboard, mouse, headset, controller, or other device needs—not simply the adapter with the biggest Bluetooth version number. Before buying, verify the exact hardware revision and its current driver support.
Check whether your PC already has Bluetooth
Before shopping, check Windows’ Bluetooth settings or Device Manager to see whether the PC already has a Bluetooth radio. If it does, an external adapter may be unnecessary. Microsoft explains that a USB Bluetooth adapter can add Bluetooth to a Windows PC that does not have it: Pair a Bluetooth device in Windows.

Compare the features you actually need
Start with the peripheral you intend to connect. A keyboard, mouse, headset, and controller can depend on different Bluetooth profiles or features. Check that the adapter, Windows version, and peripheral support the functions you need; a Bluetooth version number by itself does not establish that all three will work together.

Check your Windows version and the exact adapter revision
Look up the manufacturer’s support page for the precise hardware revision and regional version of the adapter you are considering. Products sold under one model name can have different specifications, operating-system listings, or driver downloads across revisions. Confirm the listing includes your Windows version and that a suitable driver is available.
For example, TP-Link’s UB500 V3.60 US support page lists Bluetooth 5.4 and a Windows 10/11 driver. Its V3 datasheet specifies a USB-A connector, Bluetooth 5.4, and Windows 11, 10, 8.1, and 7, while noting that a driver update may be needed after an operating-system update. These details apply to those specific listings, not every UB500 revision: check the UB500 V3.60 support and driver page and the UB500 V3 datasheet against the unit offered.

Do not choose by Bluetooth version alone
A higher Bluetooth specification does not guarantee that the PC and accessory will support every feature associated with it. Microsoft says Windows exposes the adapter’s LMP version in Device Manager, which maps to the highest Bluetooth Core Specification fully supported by the PC. It also cautions that an accessory with a higher specification than the PC’s radio might work with reduced functionality. Make sure the connector and placement suit your PC
- Connector: Check whether the adapter uses USB-A or another connector and confirm your PC has an available matching port. For example, TP-Link’s UB500 V3 datasheet specifies USB-A.
- Placement: Consider whether the adapter will be crowded by other USB devices. Microsoft notes that unshielded USB devices can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth connections. A different port or moving a potentially interfering device may help, but this does not establish a universal range or stability advantage for any particular adapter. - Does the manufacturer list support for your exact Windows version?
- Does the adapter support the profiles or features needed by your intended peripheral?
- Have you verified the exact hardware revision, regional listing, and available driver?
- Does its connector fit an available port on your PC?
- Can you place it where other USB devices are less likely to interfere?
There is no universal range ranking established here, so do not treat a version label or product-category claim as proof of better range or reliability.

If the adapter connects unreliably
- Check drivers: Use Windows’ driver-update options. If Windows does not find a newer Bluetooth driver, Microsoft advises checking the PC manufacturer’s website. Outdated or incompatible drivers are a common cause of Bluetooth problems.
- Try another USB port: Move the adapter to another port and, if practical, reposition unshielded USB devices that could be interfering.
- Recheck revision-specific support: Confirm the installed driver and Windows version match the adapter’s exact revision. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance covers driver and interference checks.
