Jollybot’s soft, friendly appearance is not evidence that Meta’s Muse is safe to trust with personal accounts. Muse is designed to act across connected services: Meta says it can browse, fill forms, and carry out tasks, while its safeguards include isolated computing, action approvals, and an audit trail. Those controls matter more than the mascot—and they do not eliminate the mistakes and attacks Meta says remain possible.
What Muse does—and why its mascot matters
Meta presents Muse as a personal AI agent, not just a chatbot that answers questions. The company says it can work across connected apps, use a browser, fill in forms, negotiate, and continue some tasks after the app is closed. Examples include handling email, travel, shopping, and plans that take longer than one conversation. These are advertised capabilities, not independently verified performance results. The fuzzy, rosy-cheeked mascot is called Jollybot. Axios reported that Muse product design lead Alex Cornell designed the character and interpreted its friendly look as a way to make an agent feel approachable while people are uneasy about what agents can do. That is an analysis of the design, not proof that Jollybot changes user behavior or that Meta intends to mislead users. No named independent study in the available coverage quantifies an effect on trust or adoption. Axios’s report on Jollybot explains the character and its framing.
The distinction is simple but important: a pleasant interface can make an interaction feel familiar, while the underlying agent may be able to access data and take consequential actions. A mascot cannot tell you what permissions are active, what the agent has done, or whether it handled a task correctly.

What safeguards does Meta say Muse uses?
Meta describes several layers intended to limit what Muse can do and reduce the damage if something goes wrong. In plain terms, the company says each Muse runs in its own isolated cloud computer, while a separate system called Sentinel checks whether an external action should be allowed, denied, or sent to the user for approval. Meta also says connected credentials are kept away from the core agent.
- Approvals for sensitive actions: Meta says actions such as sending an email or making a purchase require user approval.
- Access choices: Users decide which apps Muse can connect to, and Meta says they can revoke access.
- Audit trail: Meta says users can inspect a record of Muse’s actions.
- Memory controls: Meta says users can ask Muse to forget particular memories.
- Training choice: Meta says users can opt out of their data being used for training.
- Isolation: Meta says each agent has a dedicated cloud virtual machine and that Sentinel operates separately from the agent.
These are Meta’s descriptions of its own system, not independent proof that every action will be contained or that users will always understand the controls. Meta’s launch announcement says, “Each person stays in control of their Muse and decides how much access it gets.” That is the company’s stated design goal; practical control also depends on whether a person can see and evaluate the permissions and action history.

What risks does Meta acknowledge?
Meta’s safety account does not claim that safeguards make an agent infallible. Tarek Sheasha, a software engineer and vice president at Meta Superintelligence Labs, wrote in a September 8, 2026 post that “No matter how strong the model is at the core, any agent like this will still make mistakes, and it will sometimes be attacked via the data it reads.” In other words, material the agent encounters can itself be a route for an attack, and an agent can misunderstand or mishandle a task.

The useful takeaway is that isolation and approvals are risk-reduction measures, not a reason to grant broad access without checking what the agent can read and change. What the recent report says—and what it does not establish
On October 6, 2026, Tom’s Guide reported that researcher Karan Joshi extracted internal Muse instructions through the ordinary chat interface. According to that account, the instructions described hourly processes that could build pages about people in a user’s life. Tom’s Guide attributed the findings to Wired. The linked Wired report was unavailable, so the underlying files and account cannot be independently verified from that page here.
The report raises a real question about the boundary between personal assistance and information organized about third parties. It does not establish that every Muse user was affected, that the described material was publicly exposed, or that Meta confirmed a breach. Treat it as a reported finding with those limits, not proof of a widespread compromise. Tom’s Guide’s October 6 account describes the researcher’s reported findings and their attribution.

Connected services make the trust question concrete
Integrations can make an agent useful precisely because it can act beyond its own chat window. Spotify says users can connect Muse to play and save tracks, create playlists, and find podcasts and audiobooks. That is a documented example of delegated access crossing a service boundary—not evidence that Muse has access to every Spotify user’s account or that the integration behaves a particular way in every case. The convenience and exposure grow together: the more services and data a task requires, the more important it is to know what the agent can read, what it can change, and when it must ask first. Personalization may also involve memories about a user’s life; the October report’s concern about profiles of acquaintances makes it especially important to consider information about people who never chose to use Muse.
How to judge Muse in practice
Meta’s safety post poses the central question as how much to trust Muse “in practice.” A practical answer should depend on the scope of access and what can be checked, not the emotional signal of Jollybot’s design.
- Start with the task. Decide whether the task genuinely needs access to a connected service. Avoid connecting accounts simply because the agent can use them.
- Limit permissions. Connect only the apps needed for the task and review the access choices available in Muse. Revoke an integration when it is no longer useful.
- Watch for approval prompts. Treat a request to send, buy, or otherwise commit to an action as a decision point. Review the proposed action rather than approving automatically.
- Inspect the record. Use the audit trail Meta says is available to check what Muse did. If the history is unclear or does not let you verify an important action, do not assume it was completed correctly.
- Keep sensitive work in proportion. The more consequential the information or action, the less appropriate it is to rely on a friendly presentation or an unverified agent result.
- Consider other people’s information. A task involving messages, contacts, or plans may expose details about people who have not granted Muse access themselves.
Availability also has a time and geography qualification. The Associated Press reported at launch on September 8, 2026 that Muse was limited to adults in the United States. That describes launch-time eligibility, not necessarily the product’s current rollout. The AP’s launch coverage provides that context.
