That figure describes the link’s rated data rate—not a guaranteed file-transfer speed—and it does not tell you what connector a cable uses or how much power it can deliver.
What does “Gen 1×1” mean?
USB-IF lists three transfer rates in the USB 3.2 family: 5Gbps, 10Gbps, and 20Gbps. Gen 1×1 is the 5Gbps mode: “Gen 1” identifies the generation rate, while “1×1” denotes one lane at that rate. USB-IF’s technical resources include a Link Layer Test Specification specifically for USB 3.2 Gen1x1. USB-IF’s USB 3.2 overview describes the family rates and compatibility; its USB 3.2 resources identify the Gen1x1 test specification.

Does 5Gbps mean files transfer at 5GB per second?
No. Gbps means gigabits per second, whereas GB/s means gigabytes per second; the units are different. More importantly, 5Gbps is a signaling rate, not a promise of usable file-transfer throughput. Protocol overhead and the capabilities and conditions of the connected equipment affect the data rate a transfer can achieve. USB-IF’s rate list is a standards capability list, not a real-world benchmark.
How does Gen 1×1 compare with other USB 3.2 rates?
| USB 3.2 rate | What it indicates |
|---|---|
| 5Gbps | Gen 1×1; one lane at the Gen 1 rate |
| 10Gbps | A higher USB 3.2 family signaling rate |
| 20Gbps | The highest of the three rates USB-IF lists for the USB 3.2 family |
These figures describe signaling capability, not guaranteed transfer speeds. USB-IF’s USB 3.2 overview lists all three rates.

Is USB 3.2 Gen 1×1 the same as USB-C?
No. Gen 1×1 specifies a data rate; USB Type-C is a connector type. USB-IF explicitly distinguishes USB 3.2 transfer-rate names from connector and cable types, which also include Standard-A and Micro-USB. A connector’s shape alone does not establish that a connection supports 5Gbps. Check the data-rate capability of the host, device, and cable together. USB-IF’s USB 3.2 language and packaging guidance separates transfer rate from connector and cable specifications.
Does Gen 1×1 tell you whether a device supports fast charging?
No. USB 3.2’s data-rate designation does not establish support for USB Power Delivery or USB Battery Charging. Charging capability is a separate specification, so check the device, power source, and cable details rather than inferring charging performance from “Gen 1×1.” USB-IF’s guidance treats data-rate, connector, and charging information as distinct.

Why do product descriptions use different names for 5Gbps?
The naming has changed over time. USB-IF says the USB 3.2 specification absorbed earlier USB 3.x specifications, so older product descriptions may call a 5Gbps mode USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 Gen 1, while technical references may use USB 3.2 Gen 1. For consumer-facing product names, USB-IF’s January 2024 Data Performance Language Usage Guidelines recommend “USB 5Gbps” for products signaling at that rate. Earlier packaging guidance used “SuperSpeed USB” for 5Gbps products. The 2024 guide also says names such as “USB 3.2,” “SuperSpeed Plus,” “Enhanced SuperSpeed,” and “SuperSpeed+” are specification terminology, not intended for consumer-facing product names or packaging. The exact mode name remains useful in technical specifications.

What speed should you expect when devices are connected?
The connection operates at the lowest common speed capability among the connected equipment. A host, device, or connection component that supports only a lower rate can limit the link, even if the other parts support 5Gbps or more. USB-IF describes USB 3.2 as backward compatible and states that operation falls to the lowest common speed; see its USB 3.2 overview. To check a setup, verify each component’s stated data rate and connector type independently. Do not assume a cable supports 5Gbps solely because its plug fits the port.
