Google Forms Locked Mode: How to Leave a Quiz or Get Back In

Contact your teacher or proctor before leaving a locked Google Forms quiz. Exiting can notify them, and Google does not document one universal student exit control.

If you need to leave a Google Forms quiz in locked mode, contact your teacher or proctor and follow the school’s instructions for ending or resuming the attempt. Google says leaving can notify the teacher; its help page does not describe a universal student exit button, so don’t rely on closing the tab, restarting the Chromebook, or trying a workaround.

What happens when you leave a locked quiz?

Locked mode is a Google Forms quiz setting for Chromebooks. While it is active, students cannot browse other websites or open other apps, and some extensions and keyboard shortcuts are disabled. The quiz collects email addresses and is restricted to the school’s domain. A teacher is notified by email if a student exits the quiz or opens another tab. Google also says reopening the quiz within 30 days can notify the teacher; after 30 days from the last time it was opened, no notification is sent. Quiz access may also be limited to scheduled hours. See Google’s locked mode help page.

How to leave or resume an active quiz

Tell your teacher or proctor that you need to stop, leave, or resume the attempt, then use the process they approve. Google does not document one set of on-screen exit controls for every locked quiz or device configuration. Because exiting can trigger a teacher notification, check with the teacher rather than experimenting with tab-closing or device restarts. The teacher can tell you whether and how to return to the attempt.

Why a locked Google Forms quiz may not open

Locked mode has specific school-device and account requirements. Google lists a Google Workspace for Education account, a school-managed Chromebook for each student, and Chrome OS 75 or later. If the quiz will not start, check the following:

HP 14" HD Chromebook Laptop for Students, Intel Quad-Core N4120(> N4020), 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, WiFi, Webcam, HDMI, USB-A&C, 14 Hours Battery Life, Zoom, Chrome OS, CUE Accessories
  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
  • Update the Chromebook’s operating system.
  • Make sure the Chromebook is managed by the school.
  • Sign in to the Chromebook with the school Google Account associated with the quiz.
  • Check with the teacher whether the quiz is currently available; it may be restricted to scheduled hours.

If it still will not start, ask the teacher or school administrator to check the setup. Google’s locked mode guidance covers device and account troubleshooting.

If you see a permissions error

Confirm that you are using the correct work or school account. If you are, the form owner may need to grant your account access. Ask the teacher or form owner to check permissions; Google explains this in its forms access guidance.

Accessibility needs and approved accommodations

If the locked quiz interface or device creates an accessibility barrier, tell your teacher or school administrator and ask what accommodation is approved for the assessment. Google lists ChromeVox, high contrast mode, fullscreen magnifier, and docked magnifier among Chromebook accessibility features recommended for locked mode. The school determines how an accommodation is arranged for a particular quiz. See Google’s locked mode guidance.

What teachers can check

Teachers need a Google Workspace for Education account, school-managed Chromebooks for students, and Chrome OS 75 or later for locked mode. To enable it, open the quiz, select Settings, make the form a quiz if needed, and turn on Locked mode under Chromebook settings. If students cannot use the feature, check that they are signed in with their school accounts, that the Chromebooks are managed by the school, and that Chrome OS is up to date. Google’s setup and troubleshooting instructions provide the relevant steps.
