When should you use URL2PNG?
Use URL2PNG when the core operation is: provide a target URL and capture settings, then receive a screenshot through a hosted API. That avoids building and operating the browser-capture runtime yourself. The service documentation describes thumbnails or 1:1 resolution, full-page captures, viewport controls, user-agent and language overrides, custom CSS injection, and JavaScript-controlled capture.

Request controls to consider
- Viewport and full page: Set dimensions for a consistent viewport, or request a full-page capture when you need the page beyond the initial screen.
- Wait behavior: The documented controls include waiting for a page element and delaying capture after document readiness and asset loading. A fixed delay may be simpler, while waiting for an element can better express a page-specific readiness condition.
- Appearance: Custom CSS can adjust the page before capture. User-agent and Accept-Language controls can change what the site serves.
- Cache: Cache uniqueness and TTL controls are documented. The Quickstart lists a default TTL of 2,592,000 seconds (30 days); confirm the current default in the service documentation before relying on it.
These controls make URL2PNG configurable at request time. They do not establish that it can perform every interaction a particular site requires or that its output will match a locally controlled browser pixel for pixel.
When should you use Playwright?
Use Playwright when screenshot capture is one stage in a larger browser task you want to define in code—for example, navigating through a workflow before saving an image—or when you want screenshot assertions in Playwright Test. The Page API documents the basic sequence: launch a browser, open a page, navigate to a URL, and save a screenshot.

Avoid adding a long fixed delay unless you have a specific reason: it can make a capture slower without proving the page is ready.
Visual comparisons with Playwright Test
Playwright Test documents toHaveScreenshot(). An initial run creates reference screenshots; later runs compare current output against those references. Treat those screenshots as environment-dependent test artifacts, not as universal ground truth.
Playwright warns that output can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. To reduce noisy differences, generate the baseline and later captures in the same environment, with the same browser version and relevant settings. If your CI workers differ from developer machines, establish the baseline in the environment where comparisons will run.

Choose a hosted API when capture is the product feature
If an application needs screenshots but does not need to drive a complex browser journey, a hosted API is the more direct pattern: your application sends a capture request instead of provisioning browsers and maintaining their runtime. If the screenshot must follow scripted browser actions, or must be asserted against a maintained visual baseline, Playwright is the closer fit. This gives you control over code and execution environment, with the corresponding responsibility to install, run, and keep that environment consistent.
Do not pick a winner from unsupported performance claims
The available official materials do not establish a general price or speed winner, comparative rendering accuracy, or workload-specific operating cost. Test representative target pages with the exact viewport, wait condition, and output format your application needs. For Playwright comparisons, keep the environment fixed; for a hosted API, verify the current service limits and billing terms before estimating volume.

The capture misses content that appears late
For URL2PNG, use its documented wait-for-element or delay controls and choose a condition tied to the content you need. For Playwright, wait for a relevant locator or page condition before calling screenshot(). Neither a document load event nor an arbitrary delay guarantees that every site’s asynchronous content is complete.

Repeated screenshots differ unexpectedly
For Playwright visual tests, check whether the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode changed. Keep baseline and subsequent captures in the same environment. Also verify that the page state and capture timing are the same.
A URL2PNG capture looks stale
Review the service’s cache uniqueness and TTL settings, and check the current documentation for its default behavior. The Quickstart lists a 30-day TTL default, but defaults can change; do not assume a fresh capture if cache behavior has not been verified.
