Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, and Chromebook all have built-in options, though their controls and limits differ.
Before you start: choose the screen and audio
Decide whether you need the whole display, a selected area, a window, or an app/game clip. Then check audio settings: microphone narration and device or system audio are separate options, and availability varies by device, operating-system version, and app. A target app may block recording altogether.

|---|---|---|
| Windows Xbox Game Bar | VideosCaptures | MP4 output, per Microsoft’s instructions. |
| Mac Screenshot | The location selected in Options; Desktop is the default in Apple’s guide. | QuickTime Player is another built-in method. |
| iPhone | Photos | Some apps restrict capture. |
| Android | Use the device’s screen-recording notification or gallery/files app to locate the result. | The cited Android guidance does not specify one universal save folder; device behavior varies. |

Troubleshoot common screen-recording problems
The recorder or shortcut is missing
- On iPhone, add Screen Recording to Control Center if the control is absent.
- On Chromebook, use Shift+Ctrl+Show windows to open screen capture controls.
- On Windows, use Snipping Tool for an area recording or Xbox Game Bar for an app or game clip; their workflows are not interchangeable.
- On Android, the Screen Record tile and menu placement depend on the device.
The video has no narration or system sound
- Before starting, enable the microphone if you need narration; on iPhone, press and hold the Screen Recording control to expose its microphone option.
- For Chromebook, choose device audio, microphone, or both in Settings.
- For Windows Game Bar, check computer-sound settings and the microphone toggle.
- On Mac, distinguish microphone capture from system-audio capture; Apple documents the latter for macOS 27 or later.
A protected app or screen will not record
Some apps restrict capture, and some Windows recording guidance covers app or game clips rather than every desktop surface. Try a supported capture scope where appropriate, but a built-in recorder cannot override an app’s capture restriction. On iPhone, screen recording and screen mirroring cannot run simultaneously.
The recording saved somewhere unexpected
Check the documented default first: VideosCaptures for Game Bar, Photos on iPhone, Downloads on Chromebook, and the selected location in Mac Screenshot options. Android’s location can vary by device, so check its notification and the device’s gallery or file browser.
