URL2PNG’s public Quickstart Guide documents capture-timing controls, but it does not publish a timeout threshold, timeout-specific error code, retry policy, or guaranteed timeout fix. Start by finding out whether the target site or one of its resources is slow; use URL2PNG’s delay or say_cheese only to address page-readiness timing, not as a promise to extend the service’s timeout.
First determine where the timeout occurs
A screenshot failure can reflect a slow target, a slow dependency loaded by that target, or a failure returned by the screenshot service. Do not label an error with a URL2PNG-specific code unless the response actually provides one: its Quickstart Guide does not define a timeout error taxonomy.

- Record the exact target URL, request time, full error text, HTTP status and response body. Redact API credentials before sharing a request.
- Repeat the capture and note whether the failure recurs. Check whether the target also loads slowly in a normal browser.
- Measure the target independently, then compare the timings and results with the URL2PNG response. If the target is consistently fast but captures fail, preserve the evidence for URL2PNG support rather than guessing at an undocumented limit.
Measure the target site and find the slow dependency
Use the browser’s Developer Tools Network panel or request-timing instrumentation. Separate DNS lookup, TCP connection, TLS handshake, time to first byte (TTFB) and total request time. Repeat measurements; if location may matter, compare runs from more than one geography. Cloudflare’s slow-website troubleshooting guide describes these timing components and common areas to inspect.

Inspect the requests holding up the page
- Look for large or slow images and video, API calls, third-party scripts and render-blocking resources.
- If the origin response itself is slow, investigate the origin and its database or caching.
- For static assets, check whether caching is being bypassed or missed. Do not indiscriminately cache personalized HTML or API responses.
If the target is slow outside URL2PNG, fix that bottleneck first. Adding capture delay does not make a slow origin or resource respond faster.

Use URL2PNG timing options only for readiness
URL2PNG describes delay as a fixed wait after document readiness and asset loading. The guide’s example is &delay=2. This can help when content or an animation appears after the normal readiness point, but the guide does not describe it as a way to extend a service timeout. No maximum delay is stated in the documentation consulted.
For a page you control, say_cheese=true waits until the page contains <div id='url2png-cheese'></div>. Use a marker only when it reliably indicates that the content you need is ready; this option cannot help if the marker never appears. The guide does not say that it bypasses a timeout. Do not suggest adding the marker to a third-party site you do not control.

When changing signed URL2PNG query parameters, regenerate the token: its v6 examples describe the token as an MD5 hash of the full query string plus the secret. See the URL2PNG Quickstart Guide for request details and the documented parameter syntax.

Reduce capture scope when the full page is unnecessary
URL2PNG captures the viewport by default; fullpage=true requests the entire document canvas. If your use case needs only the visible area, avoid full-page capture. The guide gives a default viewport of 1480×1037 and a maximum of 5000×5000. A smaller viewport or viewport-only capture may reduce requested work, but URL2PNG does not promise that either change resolves a timeout.

The unique option varies a request to force a fresh screenshot, while ttl sets screenshot cache lifetime; the documented default is 2,592,000 seconds (30 days). These are cache-freshness controls, not documented render-timeout settings.
Separate URL2PNG behavior from other browser services
Browser capture products can use different navigation waits and timeout settings. For example, Cloudflare Browser Run documents a default domcontentloaded wait, options such as networkidle0, networkidle2 and selector waits, and a goToOptions.timeout increase up to 60 seconds for its own API. Its FAQ also associates its own 422 responses with timeouts, page errors or memory use. These are Cloudflare Browser Run behaviors, not evidence of URL2PNG limits or settings; do not copy them into a URL2PNG request.

Can I add `say_cheese` to a site I do not control?
No. The option waits for a marker in the target page, so it is useful only when you can make that page provide the marker.
