To show a countdown between prerecorded videos on YouTube Live, put the countdown in the program feed OBS sends to YouTube. The most straightforward OBS method is to add a rendered countdown video as an item between each program video in an OBS VLC Video playlist—for example, video → countdown → video → countdown. YouTube’s viewer-side playlist repeat control is not a way to insert interstitials into a live encoder feed.
Why the countdown has to be in the live program
A YouTube Live encoder sends audio and video to YouTube; the broadcast is the event viewers watch. That makes an OBS countdown part of the outgoing program, not a setting on a YouTube playlist. YouTube Help’s repeat control applies to watching videos or playlists, not to inserting a countdown between items in an incoming live feed (YouTube Live Streaming API overview; YouTube’s HLS stream setup; Loop videos or playlists on YouTube).

The cited YouTube Live documentation does not describe a native Live Control Room setting that inserts countdowns between prerecorded items. Prepare the countdown as part of the encoder’s output before it reaches YouTube.
Method 1: Put countdown clips in an OBS playlist
This method makes the sequence explicit and is the easiest to rehearse: each countdown is a media file placed where it should play.

1. Prepare the media and sequence
Choose the order of your program videos and how long each countdown should run. Create or obtain a countdown video supported by your playback setup, then arrange the intended sequence. For a countdown after every program video, that might be:
- Program video 1
- Countdown
- Program video 2
- Countdown
Add more videos and countdowns as needed. The countdown is an ordinary playlist item, so its position—not an assumed automatic trigger—determines when it plays.

2. Add and configure the VLC Video source
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that supplies the stream’s program.
- Add the local media files in the exact playback order, placing each countdown between the videos it should separate.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence.
- Enable Loop Playlist if the sequence should start again after its final item.
OBS documents VLC Video as a source for media playlists. VLC must be installed for this source to appear; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
3. Decide what viewers should hear and see
Choose whether the countdown is silent, contains its own audio, or includes audio that suits the transition. Check the countdown’s readability and inspect the handoffs for blank or frozen frames. A separate overlay above the playlist does not, by itself, establish when a timer starts or pause the underlying video; verify the behavior in your actual scene and with your actual media.

4. Connect OBS to the YouTube live event
Select or create the live event in YouTube’s Live Control Room, then configure OBS as the encoder using the stream details provided for that event. YouTube distinguishes the incoming audio-video stream from the broadcast event metadata; the countdown needs to be in the encoder’s audio-video output.
5. Rehearse the full sequence
Preview each video-to-countdown handoff and the final countdown-to-first-video loop boundary before relying on the setup. Confirm the item order, timer duration, visibility, audio, and whether the next video starts as expected. Playlist looping is documented as restarting the source after its media runs out; it is not documented as triggering a separate countdown scene at every clip boundary.

Method 2: Use a separate countdown scene
A separate OBS scene with a media or text timer can give you more control over the countdown’s appearance. OBS sources can be layered, but visual layering alone does not determine when the countdown begins. Arrange the transition or automation that changes to the countdown scene at the right time, then rehearse those transitions and the return to the next video.
This approach may suit a show that needs different countdown designs or timing at selected points. Compared with putting rendered countdown clips in the playlist, it requires a separately arranged transition; OBS’s documented playlist and source controls do not specify an automatic playlist-item-to-countdown-scene trigger (OBS Media Sources).

If you want one repeating countdown file rather than a multi-file sequence, OBS’s standard Media Source has a Loop setting. For a multi-file sequence, use VLC Video and Loop Playlist (OBS Media Sources).
Troubleshooting countdowns in a YouTube Live loop
- The countdown never appears between videos: Check that its file is in the VLC Video playlist at the intended position. Loop Playlist repeats the whole sequence; it does not add countdowns between items automatically.
- The countdown source is missing in OBS: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC.
- Items play in the wrong order: Turn off Shuffle Playlist and check the playlist order, including the item at the loop boundary.
- The timer is visible but the video still shows underneath: Confirm the scene’s source order and the countdown media’s visual content. An overlay does not inherently pause or hide another source.
- Audio changes unexpectedly: Review the audio in each countdown and program file, then preview every handoff in the full scene.
- A separate countdown scene does not start at a clip boundary: Arrange the scene transition or automation separately. The documented playlist loop control does not establish an automatic scene trigger.
Rights and YouTube break features
Adding a countdown does not grant permission to rebroadcast the videos, music, or artwork in the stream. Use media you own or are authorized to use. YouTube’s Take a Break feature serves a different purpose: YouTube says a live ad break does not automatically end when its countdown reaches zero, so it is not a substitute for arranging countdown clips in your repeating program (YouTube Help: Monetize your live stream).
