URL2PNG is a hosted website screenshot API for generating thumbnails and other captures inside an app or workflow. Its documented controls cover output width, viewport size, full-page capture, cache lifetime, and page readiness. The practical fit depends on how many fresh renders you need, how often pages change, and whether you can manage URL2PNG’s signed-request setup. The vendor publishes features and plans, but the available material does not establish independent performance results.
What URL2PNG does for thumbnail generation
URL2PNG describes its service as “Screenshots as a Service”: an API takes a target website URL and returns a screenshot that can be used by an app, website, or business process. The homepage lists thumbnail or 1:1 output, full-page capture, viewport controls, user-agent and language overrides, custom CSS injection, and JavaScript-controlled capture. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not independently verified results across sites.

For a thumbnail workflow, the key distinction is between the output dimensions and the browser viewport. thumbnail_max_width constrains the screenshot output width, while viewport sets the dimensions of the page being rendered. Choosing them separately lets a workflow render a page at a desktop-like viewport and then constrain the resulting image width. The homepage also advertises rendering for canvas graphs, webfonts, CSS3, SVG, and video; those claims should not be read as a guarantee that every page or asset will render successfully.

The URL2PNG v6 quickstart describes a URL-based request containing an account API key, a request token, and the encoded target URL. The API key starts with “P”; the token is generated for each request from the full query string and the account secret. The documentation calls its request pattern “Optimized for ease of use,” which is the vendor’s characterization. It provides examples in Ruby, cURL, Python, Node.js, PHP, VB.NET, Perl, and C#.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Because the token depends on the complete query string, any change to request parameters must be reflected in token generation. Treat the secret as credential material: do not expose it in browser-side code, public repositories, or logs. The retrieved quickstart demonstrates request construction but does not give a standalone security best-practices guide, so consult the current official documentation before deploying an implementation.

Capture controls that matter for thumbnails
| Control | What it changes | Useful consideration |
|---|---|---|
thumbnail_max_width |
Constrains the screenshot’s output width. | Use it to bound thumbnail dimensions; confirm the returned image dimensions in your own pipeline. |
viewport |
Sets the capture viewport. The documented default is 1480 × 1037; the quickstart gives 5000 × 5000 as an example maximum. | A page may lay out differently at a mobile-sized viewport, so match the viewport to the thumbnail’s intended context. |
fullpage=true |
Attempts to capture the entire document canvas; the documented default is viewport-only. | For standard preview cards, viewport-only may be more appropriate; full-page output can be much taller than a thumbnail. |
unique |
Forces a fresh screenshot by varying the value. | Fresh captures consume plan allowance; avoid forcing refreshes for unchanged pages unless freshness matters. |
custom_css_url |
Injects CSS from a URL. | Useful for removing or restyling page elements, provided the stylesheet is reachable during capture. |
say_cheese |
Delays capture until a named page element is available. | Use when the desired thumbnail depends on a specific element appearing. |
accept_languages and user_agent |
Override request language and user-agent headers. | These can change localized content or responsive behavior; they do not guarantee a particular page variant. |
delay |
Waits after document readiness and asset loading before capture. | Use when client-side rendering needs additional time; longer waits can increase job duration. |
ttl |
Sets screenshot cache lifetime. The documented default is 2,592,000 seconds (30 days). | Choose a shorter lifetime when pages change frequently, or use a fresh-capture mechanism when an immediate update is needed. |
Controls are documented options, not guarantees of successful rendering on every site. Authentication requirements, bot checks, scripts, and network behavior can affect whether a page is capturable; the available URL2PNG material does not promise universal access or fidelity.

URL2PNG defines a fresh screenshot as a new render. Cached screenshot impressions do not count against plan usage, and cached screenshots are retained for 30 days by default. The plans page describes overage units in thousands and says it rounds down; confirm how that applies to your account and billing before estimating a production bill. The listed per-render rate alone is not enough to determine total cost: cache hit rate, refresh frequency, and plan fit all matter.
The plans page lists Fastly CDN, full-page screenshots, custom CSS injection, no watermarks, downloading and hotlinking, operational transparency via Statuspage, and a 10-day money-back guarantee as plan-wide inclusions. URL2PNG says it currently has no free account, while student and open-source projects may pitch the service. Plans are described as month-to-month and cancellable anytime. These are vendor-published terms as of the date above, not independent assessments of service operation.

Where URL2PNG can fit in an image-delivery workflow
Cloudinary documents an add-on workflow in which a dynamic Cloudinary transformation URL invokes URL2PNG to generate a screenshot; Cloudinary then caches and delivers the resulting image through its CDN. Cloudinary says those URLs must, by default, be eagerly generated or signed through its authenticated API to limit cost exposure from unplanned dynamic requests. That is a documented Cloudinary integration pattern, not a requirement for every URL2PNG user. See Cloudinary’s URL2PNG add-on documentation.
What the published evidence does—and does not—show
URL2PNG’s homepage says it can capture snapshots “quickly and reliably,” but the available official material does not include independent speed measurements, uptime figures, comparative rendering tests, or verified customer outcome statistics. That means a review based on these materials can assess documented controls and plan structure, but cannot establish that URL2PNG is faster, more reliable, or more faithful than another API. If those factors are critical, evaluate representative pages and your own workload before committing.

URL2PNG or ScreenshotNeo?
If you are choosing a screenshot API for thumbnail generation, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. It can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request, and also offers an MCP server for AI agents. See ScreenshotNeo for the service overview.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo requires one GET request for a URL. Its parameters support screenshot formats and the capture controls described in its documentation. API details and options are in the ScreenshotNeo docs.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up free for ScreenshotNeo.
