The right WordPress screenshot plugin depends on what you need to capture. For a thumbnail of another website, Browser Screenshots embeds a remotely generated image; for a WordPress admin page saved to your Media Library, Admin Screenshots is designed for that workflow. Capture – Screenshots & PDF and Urlbox Screenshots connect WordPress to external screenshot APIs. These are different jobs, so choose by capture target, output, and service dependency—not by plugin name alone.
First decide what you need to screenshot
“Website screenshot” can mean an image of an arbitrary URL, your own WordPress front end, an admin screen, or a screenshot or PDF generated automatically. Before installing anything, answer these questions:
- What is the target? Another public URL, a page on your site, or a WordPress dashboard screen?
- Where must the file live? Is an externally hosted image acceptable, or do you need a file in your Media Library?
- What part of the page? A visible viewport, a full page, or one selected element?
- What output do you need? An image embedded in a post, a downloadable image, a PDF, or a shareable link?
- Can a third party render the page? Some plugins send the target URL and capture details to an external service; API-based workflows may also involve credentials.
For a static external-site preview, start by evaluating Browser Screenshots. For an admin screenshot saved in WordPress, evaluate Admin Screenshots. If you need configurable full-page, element, or PDF rendering, consider an API-backed plugin and review its data flow, account requirements, and current compatibility first.

Choose a plugin for the result you need
To add a preview of another website to a post
Browser Screenshots is the most direct fit among these options if a remotely hosted image is acceptable. Its shortcode and editor control are intended to embed an external website preview. The key trade-off is ownership: WordPress.org says the images are stored on WordPress.com servers rather than on your site. Its roughly 24-hour cache also means this is not a dependable way to create and retain a permanent local record.
Before relying on it for a commercial site, check the current listing’s terms and compatibility notices. At the October 3, 2026 review, the listing said it had not been tested with the latest three major WordPress releases and was tested up to WordPress 6.5.0.
To save a WordPress admin screen for support or documentation
Admin Screenshots targets the dashboard rather than an arbitrary URL. Its listing says it saves images under uploads/Media Library and provides a shareable link, which can be useful when you need to show a setting without sharing admin access. Test the specific screen you need: the listing notes that some form controls may not render perfectly, and its FAQ described full-page capture as still in progress.

To generate full-page images, selected elements, or PDFs
Capture – Screenshots & PDF and Urlbox Screenshots make WordPress shortcodes a front end for external rendering services. Capture’s documentation describes a broad set of capture controls, including full-page and selector captures and PDF output. Urlbox’s official documentation describes two full-page modes: stitched scrolling, presented as designed for accuracy across more page behaviors, and native browser capture, presented as faster but less reliable on some pages. Those are vendor descriptions, not independent performance findings.

Urlbox also requires an account, key, and secret, and its plugin listing calls the API paid. Review each provider’s current privacy, account, and pricing terms before sending URLs or credentials.
Check compatibility and data handling before installing
- Open the live WordPress.org plugin listing. Confirm the latest update, tested WordPress version, support activity, and any compatibility warning. Do not assume a version or tested-up-to value in an older article remains current.
- Check your site’s PHP version and plugin requirements. Capture’s listing states PHP 7.4+ and WordPress 4.7+; make sure your host meets the stated prerequisites before troubleshooting the plugin.
- Trace where the page is rendered. Browser Screenshots uses WordPress.com mshots; Capture and Urlbox call external APIs; Admin Screenshots captures an admin page. If URLs or credentials are sent to a provider, assess whether that is appropriate for the content.
- Test the real page and output. Verify the target URL, viewport, content below the fold, form controls, and image placement on a staging site or draft. A successful shortcode insertion does not guarantee the remote page renders exactly as expected.
- Confirm file ownership and retention. If the capture must be part of your backups or Media Library, do not assume an embedded remote image is a local attachment. The Browser Screenshots listing explicitly says its images are not saved on your website.
Other entries in the WordPress screenshot directory
The WordPress screenshot tag includes additional plugins, such as WP Screenshot, WP Featured Screenshot, Super Link Preview, ShrinkTheWeb Website Previews, JSM Screenshot Machine Shortcode, Website Screenshot to Media Library, CaptureMyPage, Screenshot Generator, and ScreenGlow Image Editor. They are not interchangeable: some focus on external previews, some on generating screenshots when posts or pages change, and others on editing existing images. Listings may show old tested WordPress versions. Check each current listing and update history against your specific task rather than treating the tag page as a vetted ranking.

The shortcode appears as text or produces no image
Check that the shortcode is entered in a shortcode-capable block or the plugin’s intended editor control, and confirm the plugin is active. For API-backed plugins, verify that the account credentials are configured as the plugin documentation requires. If the listing or plugin has not been tested against your WordPress release, compatibility may also be involved.

The image is blank, stale, or different from the live page
Remote rendering and caching can affect what you see. Browser Screenshots’ listing describes roughly 24-hour caching; allow for that when checking changes. For API captures, check the URL, wait or delay settings, viewport, and whether the target content needs browser interaction. Compare with a direct browser visit, but remember that a screenshot service may render from a different environment.
A form field or admin control is missing or misaligned
For Admin Screenshots, the plugin listing specifically warns that some form controls may render imperfectly with its HTML2Canvas-based capture. Test the exact screen and consider a different documentation method if the image must faithfully show interactive controls.
A full-page capture is incomplete or behaves inconsistently
Confirm that the selected plugin and service support full-page output for the chosen workflow, then check their current documentation for capture mode and wait options. Urlbox documents stitched and native browser full-page modes with different trade-offs; this is a vendor description, not a guarantee for every site. Admin Screenshots’ listing described full-page support as still in progress at the time reviewed.

The plugin is flagged as untested with recent WordPress versions
Do not treat “not tested” as proof that it is broken, but do treat it as a reason to test before production use. Try the plugin on staging, inspect the current support and update history, and keep a fallback workflow. Browser Screenshots and Urlbox carried warnings about the latest three major WordPress releases in the listings reviewed October 3, 2026.
Bottom line: match the tool to the capture target
For an externally hosted preview in a post, Browser Screenshots is the straightforward option if its mshots dependency and compatibility status suit you. For admin documentation that should become a Media Library file, Admin Screenshots is the closer match, with rendering caveats. For configurable screenshots or PDFs, Capture and Urlbox can connect WordPress to remote APIs, but require accounts and external data handling.
