On Windows and Linux, the upload also needs an AppStoreInfo.plist export-description file generated from an Xcode archive export. That means you can perform the upload on those systems, but the documented workflow may still require Xcode earlier to prepare the archive and metadata.
What “without Xcode” means for an IPA upload
Apple distinguishes its Transporter graphical app from iTMSTransporter, the command-line tool. The CLI lets you avoid using a graphical uploader to send an app build to App Store Connect; it does not remove Apple’s build and archive requirements. Apple’s upload guidance says, “You use Xcode to build apps for Apple products, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple Watch.” Apple’s upload-build guidance documents Transporter and command-line upload options.

On Windows or Linux, the IPA and its export description are separate inputs. Apple’s Transporter guide requires the AppStoreInfo.plist file for these platforms; Apple’s Xcode documentation describes it as part of archive export. So a common division of work is to create and export the archive with Xcode, then transfer the IPA and plist to the Windows or Linux machine that runs the upload command.

Create the App Store Connect app record
Create an app record in App Store Connect before uploading its build. Apple’s instructions are in Add a new app. The app record and the IPA are distinct prerequisites: having a file ready does not create the listing it will be uploaded to.

Have a valid IPA and, on Windows or Linux, the export description
Prepare the IPA before running Transporter. For a Windows or Linux upload, also provide the AppStoreInfo.plist produced by exporting an Xcode archive. Apple documents archive export files in its Xcode documentation; the Transporter requirements are in the Transporter User Guide 4.2.
- Windows or Linux: provide both the IPA and
AppStoreInfo.plist. - Mac: Apple documents command-line upload options. The Windows/Linux-specific requirement for the export-description file should not be generalized to every platform.
Choose supported authentication and protect credentials
Apple’s Transporter guide includes API-key and username/password examples. Use an authentication method supported by the current guide and account, and do not put a real key, issuer ID or password in a script that will be shared or committed. The example below uses placeholders, not credentials.

Check Apple’s build requirements for your submission date
Build-upload requirements change. Apple’s current Upload builds page says that beginning in 2026, uploads require Xcode 14 or later, and its table lists build-version requirements by platform. Check that live table for the target platform and the date you plan to submit; a command-line uploader does not waive the applicable build requirement.
Upload with Apple’s iTMSTransporter command
Apple’s Linux example uses -m upload for the upload operation and -assetFile to identify the app file. On Windows and Linux, add -assetDescription with the path to the export-description plist:

-assetDescription AppStoreInfo.plistReplace <issuer-id> and <key-id> with the appropriate API-key values, and replace the file names with paths to your own IPA and plist. Keep the angle-bracketed values as placeholders until you substitute credentials locally. The executable path shown is Apple’s Linux example; it is not a universal path for every installation.
Use the executable for your platform
The command-line tool’s location and invocation differ by operating system. Apple documents the Windows command as C:Program Files (x86)itmsiTMSTransporter.cmd. Use the platform-specific installation and command details in Apple’s Transporter User Guide. Do not assume the Linux path in the example exists on macOS or Windows.

On a Mac, Apple also documents xcrun altool --validate-app and xcrun altool --upload-app; xcrun is included with Xcode. See Apple’s upload-build documentation for the supported methods and current requirements. The exact commands and authentication options depend on the method you choose, so follow Apple’s current platform-specific instructions rather than adapting the Linux example by guesswork.

What happens after the command runs
A successful transfer is not the same as App Review approval or public release. Apple processes uploaded builds before they appear in App Store Connect. Once processing is complete, you can make the build available for testing or select it as part of a submission. Apple explains these stages in Upload builds and the App Store Connect workflow.

The command itself cannot establish that a particular IPA is valid, that the account has the required permissions, or that a given upload will succeed. If the build does not appear after transfer, check its processing status and any messages in App Store Connect before treating the upload as complete.
