For a routine app-based payment, UPI is often the simplest choice if the recipient supports it and your amount is within your bank or app’s limit. Choose IMPS when you need an instant bank-channel transfer using beneficiary details. NEFT is useful for transfers that may exceed another rail’s limit: the RBI sets no overall NEFT amount ceiling, although your bank can impose one. All three are available around the clock, but their speed, limits, channels and charges differ.
UPI vs IMPS vs NEFT at a glance
| Feature | UPI | IMPS | NEFT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speed | Instant, according to NPCI | Real-time, according to NPCI | Near-real-time; RBI says it operates in half-hourly batches |
| Availability | 24/7 | 24×7, including holidays | 24×7×365 |
| Published system limit | Normally up to ₹1 lakh per transaction; specified categories have higher limits, including up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme | Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction for channels other than SMS and IVR | No RBI-imposed amount ceiling; a member bank may set its own limit |
| Typical setup | Use a participating UPI app and linked bank account; send to a supported UPI address or account details | Use a participating bank’s supported channel, such as mobile, internet or ATM | Set up the beneficiary with bank and account details, including IFSC |
| Fees | Check the app and bank for the applicable service and transaction type | Check your bank’s fee schedule | Online NEFT is free for savings-account customers under RBI rules; other outward transfers may be charged |
These are published rail-level rules, not a guarantee that every bank or app allows the full amount or every channel. Confirm your own bank’s current limits, access and charges before authorizing a transfer. NPCI’s UPI FAQ, NPCI’s IMPS overview and the RBI’s NEFT FAQ describe the system rules.

Which transfer method should you choose?
Choose UPI for a convenient everyday payment
UPI is designed around app-based transfers and merchant payments. NPCI describes it as built over IMPS infrastructure, with features including a single app for transfers, simplified merchant payments and supported transfers using a virtual ID or account-plus-IFSC. The beneficiary does not necessarily need to register in advance if the identifier and service you use support that transfer. You do need to register through a participating payment service provider and link your bank account.
For normal UPI transactions, NPCI’s FAQ states a limit of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. Specified categories can have higher limits, including up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme payments. These higher limits apply to eligible categories, not to every ordinary transfer; check your app and bank for the category and limit that apply.
Choose IMPS for an instant transfer through a bank channel
IMPS is a real-time service available around the clock, including holidays. NPCI lists mobile, internet and ATM banking as channels. It can suit a transfer using beneficiary details when you want to send through a participating bank’s IMPS service rather than a UPI address.
NPCI states a limit of ₹5 lakh per transaction for IMPS channels other than SMS and IVR. Your bank may set lower limits, restrict channels or apply its own charges, so check those details first.

Choose NEFT when a bank-details transfer may need more headroom
NEFT is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Unlike UPI and IMPS, the RBI does not impose an overall amount ceiling on NEFT transfers; a member bank may set its own cap. NEFT is near-real-time, not the same as a single instant settlement: RBI describes it as operating through half-hourly batches.

Which is faster: UPI or NEFT?
UPI is described by NPCI as instant. NEFT is available at all hours but runs through half-hourly batches, and RBI characterizes it as near-real-time. So UPI is generally the more direct choice when you need an app-based transfer to complete instantly, provided the payment succeeds and the recipient supports the method. Round-the-clock NEFT availability does not mean every NEFT transfer settles at the instant it is initiated.
IMPS is also described by NPCI as real-time and available 24×7, including holidays. In practice, successful completion depends on the participating banks, the channel you choose and the applicable limits.

What to check before sending
- Recipient support: Confirm the recipient can receive money through the UPI address or bank details you plan to use.
- Amount and bank limit: Compare the transfer amount with both the published rail limit and your bank or app’s own per-transaction or daily limit.
- Channel and charges: For IMPS, check which channels your bank enables and its fees. For NEFT, distinguish an online transfer from other channels and customer types when checking charges.
- Recipient details: For bank-account transfers, verify the account number, account type and IFSC with the recipient. Do not assume a transfer can be recalled if you enter incorrect details.
- Authorization: Review the recipient and amount on the confirmation screen before approving. NPCI says a UPI payment cannot be stopped once initiated; never disclose your UPI PIN, OTP or banking password to another person.
Bottom line: the best option depends on the payment
Use UPI for the convenience of a supported everyday app payment, IMPS for a real-time bank-channel transfer, and NEFT when you need bank-account routing and the amount may be above another rail’s published limit. Check the exact limit and fee with your bank before sending; a system-level rule does not override a bank’s controls.
