RAID and replication can help keep systems running after a drive fails, but neither is a substitute for an independent backup: deletion, corruption, ransomware, or a site-wide incident can affect both the original and its replica.
What to protect in an AI dataset
Protect the pieces needed to reproduce or resume the work, not just the largest data files. A practical inventory includes raw data, labels, metadata, preprocessing code and configuration, dataset manifests, and model checkpoints. Identify which items are irreplaceable, which can be regenerated, and how often each changes. That inventory helps set backup frequency and recovery priorities; it is a practical application of the recovery-planning and audit guidance in NIST SP 800-209, Security Guidelines for Storage Infrastructure (2020).

Set recovery targets before choosing storage
Choose a recovery point objective (RPO) and recovery time objective (RTO) for each important asset. RPO is the amount of recent work or data you can afford to lose, usually expressed as time. RTO is how long you can wait for the data or workflow to be restored. The backup schedule must be frequent enough to meet the RPO, while the backup location and restore process must be capable of meeting the RTO.
For example, a dataset that changes daily may need more frequent copies than a frozen archive. A large copy may take much longer to restore than to list in a storage console. Measure restore time using your own data volume, network, retention settings, and destination rather than assuming that nominal capacity or upload speed predicts recovery time.

Keep independent copies, not just redundant disks
Use a primary working copy and backup copies that do not all rely on the same drive, host, credentials, or location. CISA recommends backing up to a secure external hard drive or a properly vetted cloud service. For critical data, an offline copy or one managed separately can reduce exposure to online deletion and ransomware paths. A replica on another device can help with availability, but if it shares access permissions or automatically mirrors deletions and corruption, it may not preserve a clean recovery point.
| Storage option | What it can contribute | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| External hard drive | A local backup destination; it can be disconnected when not in use. CISA names secure external drives as a backup option. | Capacity, interface and sustained transfer rate, reliability and warranty, encryption workflow, number of copies, storage location, and the burden of connecting and updating it. The sources cited here do not compare drive models. |
| NAS or other network storage | Centralized shared storage and, depending on configuration, replication. | Redundancy design, an independent backup, separation of administrator access, integrity checking, restore throughput, and maintenance burden. NIST discusses storage infrastructure categories but does not establish a model-level recommendation here. |
| Cloud or object storage | A remote copy. Amazon S3 documents checksum validation for transfers and a way to compute checksums for objects already stored. | Region and failure-domain separation, versioning or immutability, access controls, checksum support, transfer and retrieval costs, restore time, and provider responsibilities. S3 features should not be assumed to exist in other platforms. |
| Offline or separately administered backup | Can reduce exposure to some online deletion and ransomware paths. | Update frequency, restore speed, physical security, and whether restoration is tested. |
There is no universally best storage choice established for every AI dataset. For multi-terabyte or rapidly changing data, compare options using your own RPO, RTO, retention needs, transfer volume, and retrieval costs.

Make copies verifiable with checksums
A checksum is a value calculated from data that can be recalculated later to check whether the data still matches. Create a manifest when data is assembled or backed up. Include file paths, sizes, and checksums, using an algorithm supported by the storage system and your workflow. Verify checksums after copying, uploading, migrating, or restoring files. Keep the manifest somewhere separate enough that damage to the primary copy cannot erase the only record used to validate it.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Check the affected file, transfer or storage logs, and other known-good copies before deciding which version to retain. AWS documents checksum-based upload and download validation for S3; its Batch Operations Compute checksum feature can also calculate checksums for objects at rest and produce an integrity report. Those are S3-specific capabilities, and service features and costs can change.

Use deletion protection and separate access
A backup can fail as a recovery option if an attacker or routine account can delete or alter every copy. Where the storage service supports them and they fit your retention needs, consider versioning, delete protection, or object lock. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide recommends frequent backups, offline or cloud-to-cloud copies, and deletion protection or object lock on commonly targeted storage resources.
- Separate backup credentials from everyday write access where possible.
- Restrict who can change retention, delete versions, or administer backup storage.
- Encrypt sensitive copies using an approach appropriate to the data and the recovery process.
- Document how authorized staff can regain access if the routine account or host is unavailable.
Access controls and retention settings should be tested as part of recovery planning: protection that prevents an attacker from deleting data should not make a legitimate restore impossible.

Build a repeatable protection and recovery workflow
- Inventory and prioritize: list raw datasets, labels, metadata, preprocessing code and configuration, manifests, and checkpoints. Mark what is irreplaceable and how frequently it changes.
- Set targets: record the RPO, RTO, retention period, and copy frequency for each priority asset.
- Create separated copies: maintain a working copy and backups that do not all depend on the same drive, host, credentials, or location. For critical data, consider an offline or separately administered copy.
- Record and verify integrity: create a file manifest with paths, sizes, and checksums, then verify after transfers, migrations, and restores. Preserve the verification record separately from the primary data.
- Schedule health checks: periodically recheck stored copies, monitor storage health and error logs, and investigate mismatches. For S3, Batch Operations Compute checksum can produce an at-rest integrity report for objects.
- Test restores: restore representative files and complete workflows, validate checksums and metadata, and measure the time against the RTO. Update recovery instructions and mappings when hardware or software changes.
- Audit the plan: review whether copy frequency, retention, access, and restore performance still meet the targets as the dataset and infrastructure change.
NIST SP 800-209 recommends defining recovery objectives, validating backup-copy health, documenting recovery plans, auditing them periodically, and testing restores. Its recommendation RA-SS-R5 states: “Perform a periodic test restore to ensure that it is completed successfully and that it meets the required timeframe.” NIST also says validation frequency should reflect the sensitivity and value of protected data and be no less than annually; that is a recommendation, not a measured drive-failure rate.

Why a drive-failure percentage is not a protection plan
The cited guidance does not establish a failure probability for a particular drive, array, or large AI dataset, nor does it identify a universally optimal RAID level. A failure-rate estimate would not answer whether your copies are independent, whether corruption will be detected, or whether you can restore in time. Plan around detectable integrity, recoverable copies, protected access, and demonstrated restore performance instead.
