There is no single best payment method for every transaction in India. Use UPI for routine QR-code or person-to-person payments when the recipient accepts it and the amount fits the applicable limit. Use a card when the merchant accepts it and you understand whether it draws on your bank balance or borrows on credit. Choose net banking when you prefer to approve payment through your bank’s internet-banking checkout. Whichever you use, check the payee and amount before confirming.
Choose by the kind of payment
Everyday QR and person-to-person payments
UPI is often a practical choice when paying a person or scanning a merchant’s QR code. Confirm the recipient details and amount on the payment screen: the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) says an initiated UPI payment cannot be stopped. Its FAQ states, “No, once the payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped.” NPCI’s UPI FAQ

Merchant checkout
Cards work when the merchant accepts the specific card and its online, domestic or international settings allow the transaction. Net banking works when the checkout offers an internet-banking option for your bank. UPI availability likewise depends on the merchant and app. Acceptance is not universal, so check the options shown at checkout rather than assuming one method will work everywhere.

Which is safer for online payment?
The official material cited here does not establish that UPI, cards or net banking is categorically safest. Security depends in part on how you use the payment method and what happens if a transaction is unauthorised. RBI directions say banks must provide round-the-clock reporting access through multiple channels for unauthorised electronic transactions and lost or stolen payment instruments, and advise customers to notify their bank as early as possible. Liability depends on the circumstances and account type; reporting does not mean every mistaken or fraudulent payment will be reimbursed. Before confirming a UPI payment
- Check the beneficiary name and amount on the confirmation screen.
- Never share your UPI PIN or a one-time password.
- Treat a request to enter your PIN to receive money as suspicious.
- Remember that initiating a UPI payment is consequential; verify the recipient before authorising it.
If something goes wrong
For an unauthorised transaction, contact your bank as soon as possible using its official reporting channel. For a UPI grievance, NPCI directs users to raise it through the participating bank’s UPI app. If a card is lost or stolen, contact the issuing bank promptly. Keep relevant transaction details, but do not share PINs or one-time passwords while seeking help. NPCI’s UPI FAQ RBI directions

Does UPI have lower fees, or is it faster?
The official sources cited here do not provide a comparable, current fee schedule for all three methods, so they do not support a universal claim that one is always cheaper. Nor do the available figures establish a current head-to-head speed ranking. Check the relevant bank, card issuer, app and checkout for any charges or transaction conditions that apply to your payment.
