For gaming by itself, 16GB of RAM is still adequate for many games; 32GB is most worthwhile when you also run memory-heavy apps, or when a particular game and system show memory pressure. Doubling capacity does not guarantee higher average frame rates. The right choice depends on what you run at the same time, how your PC behaves during a real gaming session, and whether it supports a compatible upgrade.
Does 32GB RAM improve gaming performance?
Not automatically. Intel recommends at least 16GB for modern games and says more memory can help responsiveness, particularly when multitasking. But extra capacity is not a universal FPS setting: if a game and the rest of your workload fit comfortably in 16GB, moving to 32GB may make little or no difference to its average frame rate. Intel’s gaming RAM guidance and an independent TechSpot test suite published in 2026 both support treating the decision as workload-specific.

Average FPS is not the only useful measure. When memory is under pressure, frame-time consistency and 1% lows can also suffer. TechSpot found examples where lower capacity produced worse frame-time behavior, but the size of any effect depended on the game and test configuration—not simply on the capacity printed on the memory kit.

You play while running other applications
32GB offers more headroom when a game shares memory with a browser full of tabs, voice chat, recording software, or other demanding applications. Intel specifically names livestreaming, Discord group chat, and leaving YouTube or Twitch open as reasons to consider 32GB. That headroom can help avoid memory pressure; it does not guarantee a performance boost in every game.

Your game or setup shows memory pressure
TechSpot’s 2026 tests illustrate why specific workloads matter. In its Marvel Rivals test, memory use was around 18GB in the 32GB and 64GB configurations. In its Mafia: The Old Country test, the review found that around 20GB of system memory was required for a smooth experience. Those are findings from the review’s tested setup, not universal requirements for either game or guarantees about what every player will see.
The review also reported that 32GB improved 1% lows by more than 60% in one Marvel Rivals test using a graphics card with 8GB of VRAM. This result is specific to that game, GPU, settings, and test method; it should not be read as a typical gain from upgrading any PC. TechSpot simulated different capacities with the same 64GB DDR5 kit on a Windows 11 system, which helped reduce changes in memory timings between capacity runs. Results can still differ with other hardware, game updates, settings, and background workloads.

You want room for future workloads
If you expect to add streaming, content creation, or more demanding multitasking to your gaming routine, spare capacity may be useful even if your current games run acceptably. Weigh that flexibility against the cost of a compatible upgrade; current RAM prices were not established here, so there is no verified price threshold at which 32GB becomes the better value.
How do system RAM and graphics-card VRAM affect each other?
System RAM and graphics-card VRAM are separate resources, and a PC can run short of either one. Steam’s in-game overlay reports system memory and video memory separately. In one TechSpot test scenario, an 8GB graphics card put more asset pressure on system memory. That illustrates how the two can interact in a particular setup; it does not establish that every 8GB GPU or game needs 32GB of system RAM.

To check your own session, enable Steam’s in-game overlay and look at physical system-memory use separately from video-memory use while playing with your usual background apps open. Steam advises that if you are near your system-memory maximum, closing other applications or adding system RAM may help. A high usage reading is a clue to investigate, not proof on its own that an upgrade will improve a particular game. Compare the observation with relevant tests for your game and setup. Steam explains the in-game performance overlay.
Does more RAM make games load faster?
Not necessarily. Steam says Windows can cache frequently used files when sufficient RAM is available, which may make levels load or relaunch faster. That describes a possible benefit of caching; it does not show that every move from 16GB to 32GB will shorten loading times. Storage speed, the game, and whether the files are already cached also matter. Steam’s hardware troubleshooting guidance describes this caching behavior.

What to check before buying a 32GB upgrade
Do not assume that any 32GB kit will work in any gaming PC. First check your system documentation or a compatibility checker, then confirm the memory type, form factor, maximum supported capacity, available slots, and whether the memory can be upgraded. Intel notes that desktops commonly use DIMMs and laptops commonly use SO-DIMMs; some laptop memory is soldered and is not intended to be swapped.
- Memory generation and type: Confirm what the motherboard or laptop supports.
- Form factor: Check whether the system needs DIMMs or SO-DIMMs.
- Capacity and slots: Verify the system’s maximum capacity and how many slots are available or already occupied.
- Upgradeability: Check whether the RAM is replaceable or soldered.
- Module compatibility: Use your system documentation or a compatibility checker before choosing a compatible 32GB RAM kit.
These checks matter because the right upgrade depends on the specific system, not just on whether the PC is a desktop or laptop. Intel’s guidance covers common form factors and upgrade considerations.

How to decide between 16GB and 32GB
| What your session looks like | What to consider |
|---|---|
| You play one game with few other apps open, and performance is consistent. | 16GB may be adequate; capacity alone is not a reason to expect higher average FPS from an upgrade. |
| You routinely game alongside streaming, recording, many browser tabs, or other memory-heavy apps. | 32GB can provide useful headroom for the combined workload. |
| You notice memory pressure or poor frame pacing in a particular game and setup. | Check system RAM and VRAM separately, then compare your situation with game-specific tests before buying. |
| Your computer has limited slots, a low capacity ceiling, or soldered memory. | Confirm upgradeability and compatibility first; a larger kit may not be usable in that system. |
Base the decision on a representative session: play the game you care about with the apps you normally keep open, observe memory use and frame-time behavior, and check that your system can accept the upgrade. This is more useful than treating 32GB as a universal gaming requirement.
