Neither option has one universal cost: QR fees depend on the merchant category and provider terms, while POS rental, card MDR and settlement terms depend on the acquiring agreement. As of October 7, 2026, a new UPI MDR framework is scheduled to take effect on October 15, 2026, so its announced rates should not be treated as already in force.
UPI QR code vs. POS machine for a small business: what is the difference?
A merchant UPI QR lets a customer scan and authorize a payment in a UPI app. It can be displayed without a dedicated card terminal. A POS card machine is designed for card-present transactions: the customer taps, inserts or swipes a physical card, depending on the device.

Products can combine functions, so check the provider’s supported payment instruments rather than assuming that every device labelled “POS” or “QR” accepts the same methods. Paytm, for example, lists merchant QR, Soundbox, POS and dynamic QR as separate product options on its All-in-One QR page.
Does a UPI QR have charges for merchants?
It depends on the transaction and merchant classification. The Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, FAQ dated September 15, 2026, says the finalized framework takes effect on October 15, 2026. Until that date, describe these as announced future rules, not as rates already in effect. Under the framework, qualifying P2PM merchants receiving up to ₹1 lakh per month through UPI QR continue at zero MDR. Payments of ₹2,000 or less also remain free of MDR under the FAQ.

For specified P2M UPI transactions above ₹2,000, the announced MDR is 0.4%, capped at ₹300 for transactions of ₹75,000 or more. Specified sectors—including railways, telecom, insurance and fuel—have a flat ₹5 MDR above ₹2,000. The FAQ says existing QR infrastructure does not need to be replaced when the framework begins. Read the Department of Financial Services FAQ and ask your acquiring bank or provider how it classifies your business and applies the rules to your transactions.
Zero MDR does not necessarily mean zero total cost. A provider may charge separately for a stand, Soundbox, connectivity, software, or faster settlement. Paytm’s Master Offline Agreement includes Soundbox plan terms; those terms are not a universal tariff for every provider or merchant. Paytm’s QR page advertises next-business-day or instant settlement features, but the applicable conditions and any fees should be confirmed in your own offer.

How much does a POS machine cost per month?
There is no universal monthly POS rental established by the cited provider information. Central Bank of India says it bears the terminal cost and charges no installation fee for its cited service, but nominal monthly rental may apply and concessions may be available subject to criteria. It does not give one nationwide monthly price on its POS product page. The bank also says MDR depends on the merchant category code.
Its POS terms are an example of one bank’s offer, not a market-wide quote. Before signing, request the charges and waiver conditions in writing; a zero upfront terminal price does not by itself mean the service is free.

What payment methods and features do the options support?
| What to compare | UPI merchant QR | POS card terminal |
|---|---|---|
| Customer payment method | Customer scans with a UPI app; exact supported QR modes depend on the merchant product. (Paytm for Business, All-in-One QR.) | Physical debit, credit and prepaid cards; Central Bank of India lists Visa, Mastercard and RuPay, including contactless capability on its cited service. (Central Bank of India.) |
| Dedicated hardware | A QR can be displayed without a dedicated terminal; a stand or Soundbox is optional. (Department of Financial Services, FAQ; Paytm, agreement.) | Terminal cost and installation are free under Central Bank of India’s cited offer, but monthly rent may apply. (POS product page.) |
| Transaction fee | Announced October 15, 2026 framework: zero MDR for qualifying P2PM merchants receiving up to ₹1 lakh monthly through QR; qualifying payments up to ₹2,000 remain zero MDR; specified larger P2M transactions attract 0.4%, capped at ₹300 from ₹75,000, with listed sector exceptions. (Department of Financial Services, FAQ.) | MDR depends on the acquiring agreement and merchant category; the cited bank page does not state a universal rate. (POS product page.) |

Can a small shop accept credit cards without a POS machine?
A UPI QR alone is not a substitute for physical card acceptance. If customers need to pay by physical credit card, ask a bank or payment provider about a card-accepting POS terminal or a combined device, and verify the exact instruments it supports. A stand only displays a QR; it does not create or process a merchant payment account. A Soundbox announces successful payments but is also optional and may have its own plan charges.
What to ask before choosing QR, POS or both
Compare the full agreement against your own transaction mix, not just a headline MDR or a “free device” offer. Ask for a written example based on typical ticket sizes and monthly volume, and confirm:

- Includes terminal and power supply
- Which UPI payment categories and card types the product accepts, including contactless if needed.
- Whether your business is classified as P2PM or P2M, which transaction thresholds apply, and when any announced policy changes take effect.
- QR stand, Soundbox, terminal rental, setup, software, connectivity, maintenance and replacement charges.
- MDR by payment type and merchant category, plus any minimum-volume, balance or other condition for a waiver.
- Standard settlement timing and the cost and eligibility rules for instant or faster settlement.
- How transactions are reconciled, and what refund, dispute and customer-support processes are available.
- For a POS service, the onboarding documents, KYC, settlement-account requirement and merchant agreement. Central Bank of India lists these requirements for its service; other providers may have different processes.
Do not add a surcharge to recover payment fees without confirming the applicable rules and contract. Central Bank of India states on its POS page, “Merchant shall not impose any extra charge / surcharge to Card holders.” The Ministry of Finance’s September 15, 2026 announcement also says banks have been advised not to let merchants pass the announced UPI MDR to customers. (Press Information Bureau, September 15, 2026 release.)
Which is cheaper for my shop, QR or card machine?
If most customers use UPI and your business qualifies for zero MDR, a QR may avoid the upfront need for a card terminal. If card acceptance is important, compare the POS rental and card MDR against the sales you could otherwise lose; a QR cannot accept a physical card. For a mixed customer base, a combined product or separate QR and POS options may fit better, but check whether each adds fees. The evidence does not establish a typical national POS rental or a universal cost winner, so the answer depends on your provider’s written terms, customer payment preferences and transaction sizes.

Historical MDR figures are not current price quotes
The Reserve Bank of India’s February 28, 2017 page concerns then-proposed MDR treatment for debit-card transactions. It is historical context, not a current tariff for a small business. Do not use those figures to estimate today’s POS or UPI costs. (RBI, “RBI seeks Feedback on MDR for Debit Card Transactions”.)
